“My goal is to be able to live up to the previous

Shawnee State University’s Vern Riffe Center
for the Arts and Southern Ohio Performing Arts
Association announce the 2008-2009 season
(Ten shows scheduled at the Vern Riffe Center
for the arts in the upcoming season)
Shawnee State University’s Vern Riffe Center for
the Arts and the Southern Ohio Performing Arts
Association announce the schedule for the
2008-2009 season.
“This is a great line-up of shows for the next
season,” said Carl Daehler, executive director
of the VRCFA. “It has something for everyone and
many family-friendly programs. We expect a great
response from our subscribers and the public.”
Ten shows are scheduled beginning September 18
with a performance by Cherryholmes, a family
group that promises to offer and exciting brand
of Bluegrass with a contemporary twist. The
group was recently honored with its second
Grammy Award nomination for the latest album
release, “Cherryholmes II, Black and White.”
On October 16, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra
returns for the third time under the direction
of Junichi Hirokami. He will conduct the
acclaimed orchestra in a concert featuring Igor
Stravinsky’s “The Firebird,” Ralph
Vaughan-Williams’ “Five Variants of Dives and
Lazarus” and Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for
Strings.”
On December 8, the Canadian Brass will perform a
concert including works from Bach, Purcell,
Glenn Miller and Fats Waller. They have been
featured on “The Tonight Show”, “Today”,
“Entertainment Tonight” and numerous PBS special
programs.
On January 20, a performance of the legendary
“Sweeny Todd,” a “demon barber” set on revenge
who takes up with his neighbor in a delicious
plot to “slice” their way through England’s
upper crust, will come to life on the VRCFA
stage.
On February 17, The BalletMet of Columbus will
perform the groundbreaking fusion of dance and
music in “Jazz Moves.” The electrifying program
features commissioned dance works and music by
renowned artists from around the country that
touch on legendary figures of the 1950s and the
unstoppable energy of today’s artists.
The Broadway show, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” will
be performed on March 1. It all starts when a
die-hard musical-theater fan plays his favorite
cast album on his turntable and the musical
literally bursts into life in his living room
and on stage. It is a tale filled with mobsters
and marriages, movie moguls and monkeys,
sweethearts and songs, and Latin Lotharios with
lavish dance numbers.
Then on March 24, The Romeros will be
performing. They have been called, “The Royal
Family of the Guitar,” because of the beauty of
their artistry and passage of talent from
generation to generation. Today, the group
represents Romero’s third generation of
continuing in tradition of excellence.
“To Kill a Mockingbird,” comes to the VRCFA
stage on April 7. The play is based on Harper
Lee’s classical novel of Atticus Finch, a white
lawyer and father, defending a black man.
On April 23, “Hairspray,” the winner of eight
Tony Awards will be performed on the stage of
the VRCFA. This splashy musical features Tracy
Turnblad, who dreams to dance on the popular
Corny Collins Show, and is transformed from a
social outcast to a sudden TV star.
The Ohio State University’s Men’s Glee Club,
under the direction of Dr. Robert J. Ward, will
perform on May 5 with music that has been shared
by the OSU campus and community since 1875. The
group has actively tailgated at home football
games, performed concerts on and off campus and
has made frequent concert trips both in the
United States and abroad.
Discounts are available for seniors and SSU
students, faculty, staff and alumni. Also,
receive ten shows for the price of nine. With
the purchase of a full season subscription, a
ticket for the play “To Kill a Mockingbird” will
be included at no extra charge. Single tickets
will go on sale starting August 25.
All ticketed VRCFA events are available for sale
on Ticketmaster’s world-wide Internet and ticket
outlet sales network. When using the
Ticketmaster services, additional Ticketmaster
charges may be added to the cost of the ticket.

Shawnee State University’s Shannon Lawson takes trip to
Rwanda
A group of delegates traveled to Rwanda, Africa, from
June 13 to 25 to exchange teaching crafts with African
teachers through the People to People Citizen Ambassador
Program and Shawnee State University’s Shannon Lawson,
assistant professor of English and Humanities, attended
the program. In the photo, the delegation group made up

Shawnee State University’s Shannon Lawson returns from
trip to Rwanda
(Shawnee State University’s Shannon Lawson returns after
her 12-day trip in Rwanda, Africa)
Shawnee State University’s Shannon Lawson, assistant
professor of English and Humanities, has returned from
her 12-day People to People Citizen Ambassador Program
trip in Rwanda, Africa.
“I had an amazing time and I would recommend any faculty
member or student to go on this trip because you learn
so much and get a chance to see what Rwanda and Africa
is actually like,” Lawson said.
The delegates traveled all around Rwanda meeting the
teachers and sharing their crafts of teaching with each
other. They visited nurseries, primary and secondary
schools, universities and orphanages.
“The way we exchanged our teaching strategies was we
would ask each other questions over a meal and just
discuss the different pieces of literature and
techniques we use in our classrooms,” Lawson said.
“Although it was an informal setting, the African
teachers were able to learn of our techniques and we
learned of popular African literature.”
The group also had the chance to see how Rwanda is
rebuilding after the genocide. They visited millennium
villages which are designed by the government to build
new schools, industries and co-operations to help people
make a living after the damages from the genocide. New
Dawn Associates organized the group’s local visits.
“We had a chance to go to an orphanage, Les Enfants de
Dieu that houses 130 homeless boys. This man, Rafiki
Callixte, supports and funds all of these boys on his
own and teaches them to be independent, self-sufficient
and obtain jobs when they leave the orphanage,” Lawson
said. “He takes donations and the Web site,
www.enfantsdedieu.org, tells more of what the orphanage
is about.”
Lawson hopes to be able to take a group of students to
Africa to teach and let them experience African culture
first-hand.

Shawnee State University provides food safety
certification classes
(Shawnee State University has awarded more than 150
ServSafe Food Protection Certifications since its
inception three years ago)
For the past three years, Shawnee State University has
provided state-approved food safety training awarding
more than 150 ServSafe Food Protection Certifications.
ServSafe is a nationally recognized and accredited
program.
The ServSafe Food Safety Manager Certification Program
was developed by the National Restaurant Association and
leads the way in providing foodservice industry with an
up-to-date comprehensive food safety training and
certification program.
“The two-day comprehensive ServSafe training at Shawnee
State educates attendees on the elements of safe food
handling and how to design a safety program that will
protect customers from potential food-borne illness.”
said Brenda Covert, manager of Business and Industry
Training, “This training not only teaches attendees the
‘how and why’ of safe food handling, but also teaches
them specifics on micro-organisms and their relationship
to food-borne illness. In addition, they learn
sanitation management and pest control.”
The State Of Ohio requires that every food service
establishment have a person certified in food safety or
be able to demonstrate knowledge of food-borne illness
and how to prevent its occurrence.
ServSafe provides the restaurant and food service
industry with an up-to-date, comprehensive food safety
training and certification program and it is recognized
both in Ohio and Kentucky Departments of Health.
According to the Center for Disease Control, an
estimated 76 million cases of food-borne illness occur
each year in the United States as a result of the
mishandling of food by workers. In addition more than
500,000 people are hospitalized each year and at least
5,000 people die as a result of food-borne illness.
The CDC reports that 90 percent of reported cases of
food-borne illness are related to poor food-handling
practices involving improper holding temperatures and
poor personal hygiene.
The Business and Industry Training Department at Shawnee
State University offers the ServSafe Certification
course on a quarterly basis.

Shawnee State
University’s CIPA Project Coordinator Rita
Haider receives award from Chamber of Commerce
Shawnee State University’s Rita Haider receives
award from the Portsmouth Area Chamber of
Commerce; Because of her volunteer work, Rita
Haider, project coordinator for Shawnee State
University’s Center for International Projects
and Activities, received the new “Making a
Difference” award from the Portsmouth Area
Chamber of Commerce in June along with two other
recipients. Haider is involved in several
volunteer projects in the community and around
the world. She works as co-president for Habitat
for Humanity. She works on Crop Walk, an annual
fund-raising event to fight hunger, collects
medical supplies from doctors’ offices,
individuals and hospitals to send to foreign
countries in need and she has been involved in
an outreach program encouraging people to
recycle. Haider holds her “Making a Difference”
award in the photo.
When the Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce was
choosing a “Chamber Member of the Year”
recipient this year, they realized that there
were many people in the community making a
difference. They decided to present a new
“Making a Difference” award to several people.
Three women
in the community were recognized at a chamber
banquet in June receiving the “Making a
Difference” award, Sue Burke, master gardener,
Robin Hamm-LeValley, optometrist, and Shawnee
State University’s Rita Haider, project
coordinator for the Center for International
Programs and Activities.
“We felt the
need to recognize them for their efforts,” said
Lisa Carver, administrator for the Portsmouth
Area Chamber of Commerce. “The awards were given
to those who exemplify what it means to make a
difference. Some, like Rita, not only have an
impact in our community, but across the world.”
Haider is
involved in several volunteer projects in the
community and around the world. She works as
co-president for Habitat for Humanity.
“There’s
probably not a day that I don’t go home and do
something with Habitat,” Haider said.
She is
heavily involved with Crop Walk, an annual
fund-raising event to fight hunger. Haider
collects medical supplies from doctors’ offices,
individuals and hospitals to send to foreign
countries in need. She also has been involved in
an outreach program encouraging people to
recycle.
“Here in
America, if you walk into a room with something
and even if the package hasn’t been opened, you
can’t use it on another person,” Haider said.
“So, we get all the discarded new supplies we
can.”
The supplies
are stored in rooms at the Masonic Temple that
have been donated and every other year they ship
all the supplies to countries that need them.
Some supplies are sent with people on mission
trips.
“I have
personally taken the supplies to Haiti three
times, the Philippines and Pakistan, but we have
sent them to countries around the world,” Haider
said. “It’s massive. We need a lot of volunteers
to help.”

Shawnee State
University associate professor works with Ross
County Senior Home Inspection Program
Shawnee State University students join team of
professionals in new senior program in Ross
County; Master of occupational therapy students
at Shawnee State University work with the Senior
Home Inspection Program in Ross County to help
seniors with fall assessment inspections in the
home. The program is free to seniors.
In the photo are several agencies involved in
the SHIP program. Kneeling, from left, are Lt.
Dale Gillette, Ross County Sheriff’s Office and
Jan Hager, MOT student and graduate assistant at
SSU. Standing, from left, are Dr. Christine
Raber, associate professor in the Master of
Occupational Therapy program at SSU, Assistant
Fire Chief Steve Barnes, Ross County Fire
Association, Officer Cam Morris, Chillicothe
Police Department and Joy Polley, RN, case
manager, Area Agency on Aging, District 7.
Dr. Christine Raber, associate professor, Master
of Occupational Therapy program in Health
Sciences, is working with a team of
professionals on a free home safety inspection
program developed by the Ross County Sheriff’s
Office to help senior citizens.
The
idea for the Senior Home Inspection Program was
developed originally by Lt. Dale Gillette with
the Ross County Sheriff’s Office and the program
is a cooperative effort of Shawnee State
University Occupational Therapy program, the
Ross County Fire Association, Area Agency on
Aging District 7 Inc., Ross County Department of
Jobs and Family Services, the Chillicothe Police
Department, Southern Care Inc., the Ross County
Senior Citizen’s Center and the Ross County
Sheriff’s Office.
“The Area
Agency on Aging contacted me to see if we could
involve the occupational therapy students,”
Raber said. “Then I started meeting with the
committee to plan the SHIP program.”
Students in the master of occupational therapy
program have been working with SHIP twice a
month since October 2007 and serviced more than
40 senior citizens. Jan Hager, MOT student and
graduate assistant at SSU is involved in the
program this summer.
When the SHIP
team goes to a home, each member has a
comprehensive visit with the senior citizen to
assess safety needs checking smoke detectors,
flashlights, fire extinguishers and inspecting
the home for risk factors.
“We do an
interview with the person and ask them to give
us a tour of the home,” Raber said. “The
occupational therapy students do a fall risk
assessment by observing their home and
environment and determine where there may be
risks of falling. Our primary goal is for people
to age at home safely and to prevent problems.”
The
year-round program is free and funded with
grants from United Way and the Mead Massey
Foundation. The state of Ohio has a fire safety
program that provides smoke detectors.
Equipment
such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide
detectors, emergency beacon lights, bath mats,
information about bathroom safety equipment, 911
phones, referrals for Project Lifesaver, a radio
tracking device for seniors with memory loss,
and many other resources are provided by the
different agencies. But it isn’t just the
seniors that benefit from the program.
“This is a
great benefit for the students,” Raber said. “It
helps increase their confidence to communicate
and it helps them develop what we call ‘thinking
on your feet’ skills. They have to deal with
each situation and each individual home.”
Kay Inoshita,
program director, Regional Long Term Care
Ombudsman Program, Area Agency on Aging,
District 7, who has also helped with the
program, is communicating with different
agencies to try to start a similar program in
Scioto County.
“We are
planning to discuss the program at our next
Scioto County Task Force Meeting in August,”
Inoshita said. “I guess you could say we are in
the planning stages and getting the players
together.”

Faculty and staff connect with students at
Shawnee State University
The Shawnee State University Development
Foundation has helped kick off a pilot program,
“Shawnee Connect,” with a grant. About 40
first-time students will be paired with a
faculty member, staff, upper classman or alumni
mentor to help with the transition into college
life.
Dr. Barbara
Bradbury, director of Financial Aid, came up
with the idea of “Shawnee Connect” when she was
working on her doctorate and working with nine
students on campus.
“I realized
they wanted a connection with people on campus,”
Bradbury said. “The first term is such a pivotal
term for a new student and I thought it would be
great if we could have someone who could connect
with them, be a mediary for the student and make
them feel more comfortable.”
One of the
goals of the program is to increase retention of
the students. Information will be distributed to
first-time students at orientation where they
can sign up.
The mentor
will contact the student assigned to them before
the start of fall semester and within the first
month of school invite the student to lunch to
become acquainted and give the student a welcome
bag. Before finals, the mentor will meet with
the student again for lunch to reconnect. Grant
funds will pay for the cost of the meals.
During the
semester, the students in the program are
encouraged to contact the mentor when they have
any questions.
At the end of
the year, an evaluation will be conducted by
comparing first year retention rates for the 40
participants against 40 first-time freshmen who
do not participate in the program.
“We hope that
the relationship will continue through the
spring semester,” Bradbury said.

Dr. John Whitaker chosen as winner of the Board
of Trustees Distinguished Teacher Award at
Shawnee State University
The
Faculty Affairs and Development Committee of the
University Faculty Senate at Shawnee State
University has selected Dr. John Whitaker,
associate professor of mathematics, as winner of
the Board of Trustees Distinguished Teacher
Award. In the photo, Dr. David Todt, left, vice
president of Academic Affairs and Provost at SSU
congratulates Whitaker with the award.
Dr. John Whitaker, associate professor of
mathematics at Shawnee State University, has
been chosen by the Faculty Affairs and
Development Committee of the University Faculty
Senate as the winner of the Board of Trustees
Distinguished Teacher Award.
“This is an
annual award for teaching excellence and the
faculty is nominated by their peers,” said Dr.
David Todt, vice president of Academic Affairs
and provost at SSU. “I read his nomination
letter and I see why they selected him. It was a
glowing letter of great work with students,
great teaching methods, support of research and
support of colleagues.”
His teaching
philosophy and excellent student evaluations
indicated that Whitaker’s main concern was
insuring that students in his classes learn
which helped the committee select him for the
award.
The committee
found Whitaker to be an exemplary faculty member
and a concerned, caring teacher who puts the
welfare of his students high on his list of
priorities.
“I was very
grateful and honored because there are a lot of
good teachers here at Shawnee State,” Whitaker
said. “I feel very fortunate to be here because

“Shawnee

That’s one of the strengths of Shawnee State.”

Shawnee State University’s River Valley
Farm Safety and Rural Health Coalition receives
donation for equipment
Shawnee State University received a generous
donation on Friday, June 27 from the Farm Credit
Services of Mid-America. The company donated
money for the purchase of a Glow-essence Skin
Analyzer as part of the River Valley Farm Safety
and Rural Health Coalition, which is a
partnership between SSU’s Department of Health
Sciences/Nursing, The Ohio State University
Extension office, the University of Kentucky
Extension office, Southern Ohio Medical Center
and Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
In the photo are coalition members, front row,
left, Tony Brammer, Farm Credit Services of
Mid-America, Crystal Sherman, SSU nursing
special projects coordinator, and Miranda
Howard, Farm Credit Services of Mid-America. In
back row, from left, Deborah Howell, SSU nursing
secretary, Rich Sherman, OSU Extension Educator,
Bill Turner, SSU’s EMT program leader, Mattie
Burton, SSU’s associate dean of Health Sciences
and nursing chair, Mandy Hart, associate
director of Development at SSU and Sharon
Carver, community health and wellness
coordinator.
Shawnee State University’s River Valley Farm Safety and
Rural Health Coalition project received a generous
donation for a Glow-essence Skin Analyzer from Farm
Credit Services of Mid-America on Friday, June 27 to
help educate people on the harmful effects of sun
damage. The purpose of the machine is to detect the
amount of sun damage on the skin.
“With the
rate of skin cancer increasing, we are excited to have
this machine because it will help us bring education to
the community about the harmful effects of sun damage,”
said Mattie Burton, associate professor and chair of the
nursing department.
The River
Valley Farm Safety and Rural Health Coalition members
and SSU nursing students will be using the machine to
perform public screenings. The analyzer will utilize
black-light blue lamp technology to help identify
various skin conditions, such as pigmentation problems,
sun damage below the skin, congestion and acne, oily
skin and dry areas.
It is
important to educate the people about the effects of sun
damage because about 90% of 600,000 new cases of skin
cancer reported each year are sun related.
“For Health
Career Day, the nursing students will be able to use the
machine to perform screenings,” said Crystal Sherman,
SSU nursing special projects coordinator.
For more
information or to schedule a public screening, contact
Sherman at (740) 351-3586 or e-mail at
csherman@shawnee.edu.
