SSU Planetarium Offering Two Shows

Looking for something fun to do this summer but still educational? The Clark Planetarium in the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) at Shawnee State University (SSU) is offering two shows, “Endless Horizon” and “Destination Universe” that just might fit the bill.
According to Timothy Hamilton, Ph.D., planetarium director and assistant professor of physics at SSU said “Window to the Universe” shows the visitor how the world was viewed by the ancients, as a spinning celestial sphere centered on a stationary earth, and how we know the solar system revolves around the sun. He said images of star clusters and a guided tour of a black hole are included at no extra charge.
The other show “Endless Horizon” is a movie with beautiful, computer simulated views of space, moving outward from the solar system. Hamilton said this program presents the natural history of the solar system and is a wonder to watch.
Hamilton said each show will also present either “The Skies Tonight,” an operator-narrated tour of the current night sky over Portsmouth, or the planetarium’s signature “roller-coaster rides,” a set of thrilling, motion-simulating special effects.
The shows can be seen every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 7p.m., starting on June 28 and running through July 30. A new show schedule will be released in August.
Admission to the shows is $3 for adults and $2 for children under 12; tickets are sold at the door. Planetarium seating is limited to 66 and is available on a first come first serve basis. If the 7 p.m. show sells out, there will be a second showing immediately after the first show finishes, Hamilton said.
For further information, directions, hours, and private group reservations, call the Clark Planetarium’s at (740) 351-3125. Visitor information is also available on the Planetarium web site, at planetarium@shawnee.edu.

Orientation Dates Set at Shawnee State University

Did you graduate from high school and are now ready to begin a new chapter in your life by going to college? Have you decided to go back to school and get the degree you had always planned to get to provide that much-needed upward mobility in your career? If so, nine new student orientation sessions at Shawnee State University (SSU) are available to help you facilitate the transition with ease.
Dates have been set by the Shawnee State University (SSU) Orientation Committee. They are June 21, June 23, June 28, July 12, July 14, July 26, July 28, and August 16 and 30.
Dale Taylor, director of the Student Success Center at SSU, said the entire orientation process gives students a preview of what college is going to be like.
“It not only facilitates the transition from high school to college but specifically indoctrinates the students into the more important things at Shawnee State,” Taylor said. “It lets them meet a lot of people so they will know a few folks when they actually arrive on campus and allows them to make those connections, which is important.”
Taylor said part of the orientation process is that students will actually sit down with an adviser and register for their classes.
“Naturally, the sooner you register the more classes that are available to you at the time you want them. We encourage students to register early,” Taylor said.
He said students can register online for orientation and can also register online at www.shawnee.edu for placement testing.
Taylor said the university encourages students’ family members to become involved in the orientation process. SSU offers a Family and Friends Orientation that provides information regarding academic policies, procedures, requirements, and programs, and features a panel discussion on financial aid as well as housing and tours of the Clark Memorial Library.
For more information on orientation contact the Student Success Center at (740) 351-3594.

Big Sandy Superstore Scholarship created at SSU

The Big Sandy Superstore Scholarship was established recently at Shawnee State University (SSU).
According to Mary West, educational director for Big Sandy Superstores, the award is offered through the Stuart Foundation, which was created by John C. Stuart, Jr., and Robert W. Vanhoose, Jr.
“This is the first year that the scholarship has been in place,” she said. “We decided that we would start with children of employees, who are often first-generation college students.”
The scholarship, an amount of up to $2,000, will be awarded to active employees or the children of active employees of Big Sandy Superstore in increments of one-third to cover three academic quarters.
“We want to break the chain of first-generation college students,” said West. “With that in mind, I decided that the motto of our foundation should be ‘making a difference, one employee at a time.’”
To be eligible for the Big Sandy Superstore Scholarship award, applicants must be a full-time employee or the child of a full-time employee of Big Sandy Superstores and must maintain a 2.5 G.P.A in order to re-apply for the award.
The recipient of the award must be a full-time student at Shawnee State University, if the son or daughter of an employee, or a part-time student if an employee. Recipients must also remain in good academic standing.
“We are really trying to make a difference in our employees’ lives, and in their families’ lives, even if it is one at a time,” said West.
Students who are interested in applying for the scholarship can obtain an application in the Financial Aid office, located on the second floor of the University Center at SSU, or visit the SSU web site and apply online at www.shawnee.edu/off/fa/scholarships.html . The recipient of the award will be selected by the University Financial Aid/Scholarship Committee. For more information about the scholarship, call the SSU Financial Aid office at (740) 351-4243.
Offering more than 80 bachelor’s and associate degree programs in areas such as fine, digital, and performing arts; English and Humanities; mathematical sciences; natural sciences; social sciences; teacher education; business administration; industrial and engineering technologies; and health sciences, SSU offers over $2 million annually to students in both need- and academic-based scholarships.
For more information about how to establish scholarships and other development opportunities, or to make donations to SSU, call the SSU Office of Development at (740) 351-3284.

BASICS Graduation Set For June 15

Eighty-five students will graduate from the Shawnee State University’s (SSU) BASICS program on Wednesday, June 15 at 7 p.m. in a special graduation ceremony in the Flohr Lecture Hall in the Clark Memorial Library at SSU.
“BASICS is the program for people who have not received their high school diploma for whatever reason,” said Judy Cheek, BASICS pre-GED and GED instructor. “They come here looking to achieve that goal, so they can further their education, get better jobs, or just get a job. Some people come so they can get a driver’s license or a variety of things; we even have some foreign students who come here to learn English.”
Just like a regular graduation ceremony, Cheek said the students will be dressed in caps and gowns. She said the guest speakers for the ceremony will be New Boston Mayor Jim Warren and Jim Bowling, associate director of the Ohio Department of Education.  Rita Rice Morris, Ph.D., president of SSU will give the opening welcome.
“We have students both present and past who come and talk to us each year. They have such outstanding stories and they’re marvelous to listen to because these people have worked hard to get where they are,” Cheek said. “I think if people came they might be surprised by what they’re going to see and what they’re going to hear and it might give them some hope that they too can go on and achieve their dreams.”
Another special highlight of the BASICS graduation ceremony, according to Cheek, will be the induction of six of the graduates into the program’s Honor Society.

QuickBooks Training to be Held at Shawnee State University

Small business owners and employees can take some of the hassle out of bookkeeping by attending an upcoming training session at Shawnee State University (SSU) that will help participants learn the basics of QuickBooks, the most commonly-used accounting software for small businesses.
The session will be held on June 7 and 14 from 5:50 - 9:30 p.m. on the SSU campus.  The cost for the session is $179.  Participants will learn how to begin using the software to keep track of company information such as accounts, invoices, receipts, statements, and inventory, as well as printing payroll checks and tax reports.
According to Brenda Covert, manager of business and industry training at SSU the instructor for the course, Timothy Chamberlin, has a lot of experience and participants will learn a great deal from him.
“The training instructor has been a Quickbooks Pro Adviser for the past 15 years, since the software came into existence,” Covert said.
For more information on the course or to register, call University Outreach Services at (740)351-3171 or (800) 354-4482.

Leo Named New SSU Community Service Center Coordinator

Business administration and international relations major Tracey Leo of Pemberville, Ohio, is the new coordinator of the Shawnee State University (SSU) Community Service Center. In her position, Leo will be responsible for coordinating students on campus who want to get involved in the community.
“I’ll place them in certain agencies that need help. I’ll make contact with agencies around town that need volunteers and try to mix them together,” Leo said.
She said she will also be working closely with. Eugene Valentine, Ph.D., professor of philosophy at SSU, on “The Reflections of Community Involvement” class.
“It’s a general education requirement class. Students can choose to take that or Philosophy 320, and some students rather than take a hard-core philosophy class, take more of a life philosophy class, I’ll be placing students into that class,” Leo said.
Leo hopes to continue some of the efforts of her predecessor--E.B, Newberry, who as coordinator worked to coordinate a literacy summit, established a Shantytown effort to draw attention to the homeless problem in the area, and worked with the youth program of the Ohio River Valley American Red Cross Chapter.
“I think a lot of what I want to do and focus on next year with my degree in international relations, is to try to get students to be aware of more international issues and things they can do locally to help internationally, like the Tsunami relief effort,” Leo said. “I’ve done a lot of research about AIDS and I would like to make students more aware of the problems in Africa.”
Leo said one of her responsibilities is to put together some kind of awareness week on campus to draw attention to a certain issue or problem similar to what was done this year with Shantytown.
“I just hope to make a big difference next year,” she said. “I want the students to know what my job title is and if they have anything I can help them with, I want to be out there for them,” she said.
Leo’s position as community service center coordinator is funded through the Americorps Vista program.
