Ironton banker appointed to SSU Board of Trustees Ohio Governor Bob Taft appointed Dan Mooney of Ironton to the Board of Trustees at Shawnee State University (SSU) for a nine-year term beginning this fall. A member of the banking industry for 33 years, Mooney said he is very proud and pleased to have been appointed to this position and he is enjoying his work with the other board members. “I know many of them and I have served on the SSU Development Foundation Board for several years and have come to know many great people on that board,” he said. “That was an excellent opportunity for me to get to know the university a lot better.” Mooney said it has been enjoyable to watch the growth of SSU. “I attended some classes here many years ago,” he said. “And I was working in this area in the mid-80s when Shawnee State became a university. It’s been a lot of fun to watch it grow since then.” Mooney was a force behind the construction of student housing just across from the SSU campus and is pleased to see the growth it has brought to the university and the area. “I realize how important it is to provide students with convenient, safe, and attractive housing,” he said. “I think that’s partially responsible for the increase in enrollment SSU has experienced.” Mooney is impressed by the many programs—scholastically and athletically—for which SSU is well-known. “They continue to establish their place in not just the Portsmouth community but elsewhere because their efforts are much more far-reaching than Portsmouth,” he said. “Portsmouth is certainly lucky, as a city, to have Shawnee State University.” There are many benefits universities have brought to towns throughout this region of the United States, according to Mooney. He said the towns actually exist around the university. “Where once upon a time this area was very heavy in industry, we’ve seen those days rust away and we have to replace that with modern technology; SSU has played a major role in bringing modern technology to the area,” he said. “SSU’s nursing program, plastics program, and the many other great programs reach high acclaim. I’m looking forward to being a part of that, and the university’s future growth.” Mooney lived in the Portsmouth area for eight years, leaving for another eight years to take a position in Huntington at Bank One. He came back to the Portsmouth area in fall 2000 as area president for Oak Hill Banks. He is responsible for offices in Scioto County, in addition to an office in Proctorville. A graduate of Ironton High School, Mooney attended Ohio University in Athens years ago, took classes on the SSU campus when it was OU-Portsmouth, and graduated from Marshall University with a degree in finance. He and his wife, Sue, have a son and a daughter. Mooney has professional interests in economic development, serving on the boards of the Southern Ohio Growth Partnership, the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation, in addition to many other community organizations. “It is very important for Scioto and Lawrence counties to talk,” Mooney said. “The next real growth area is the corridor between Wheelersburg and Hanging Rock. We’re seeing some great things happen there and there is still a lot of land available. Unfortunately it seems to take a long time for economic development to occur. But I think this area is so well-poised for greatness in economics if we can just wait that long.” Rita Rice Morris, president of Shawnee State University, said Mooney knows Shawnee State University very well and that is exciting to her. “He knows of our excellence,” she said. “He’s helped tell the story of our excellence. He brings a varied background that represents this region and the needs of this region but also a perspective that will be helpful to us as we plan to move forward.” # # # FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Henderson appointed to (Article by Jennifer Phillips, communications specialist--Office of Communications)
Angela Henderson of Proctorville, Ohio, has been appointed to the new assistant director of development and alumni affairs position at Shawnee State University (SSU). Henderson, who worked previously as a media coordinator and the Community Tobacco Prevention Coordinator at the Lawrence County Health Department, said she first became interested in the position after visiting SSU and seeing how nice the campus is. While visiting the SSU Web site, she discovered an advertisement for the new position and applied. “It sounded like a challenge, and I enjoy challenges,” she said. Henderson hopes that she will be able to reach out to SSU alumni and help build a stronger program. “My main purpose is to reach out to SSU alumni in a way that the University hasn’t been able to before,” she said. “The University has always tried to reach out to its alumni, but now there will be a person solely devoted to that and we will be able to communicate with them, build relationships with them, and hopefully bring them back here to Shawnee State to be a part of our community in a way that has never been possible,” Henderson said. Susan Warsaw, executive director of development at SSU, said she is excited to have Henderson on board. “We’re genuinely excited about Angela joining the SSU family,” she said. “We have known for a long time that we need to focus on our alumni; now we can do so.” # # # FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: SSU Board of Trustees The Shawnee State University (SSU) Board of Trustees will meet Friday, December 10 at 1:15 p.m. in the Selby Board Room located in the Clark Memorial Library on the SSU campus.
