Dr.
Ralph Stanley and His Clinch Mountain Boys
The
celebrated tenor and banjo picker, who has been in the business for
over 55 years, will perform at 7 p.m. on April 1.
“Dr. Stanley is one of the last remaining authentic mountain
voices in commercial music," said Carl Daehler, executive
director of the VRCFA. "We enjoyed Dr. Stanley's performance
last April so much that we immediately scheduled him for a return
visit."
Known as the patriarch of traditional and mountain music, the winner
of two Grammy awards in 2002 for Best Male Country Vocal Performance
and Album of the Year has recorded more than 170 albums and has
written and recorded many songs that have become bluegrass
standards. His contribution to the success of the musical score for
the movie, "O Brother, Where Art Thou," has made Dr.
Stanley a mountain music icon throughout the world.
Joining Dr. Stanley on stage will be the Isaacs, a seven-member
southern/bluegrass gospel family group that has been performing for
more than 30 years with such stars as gospel music artist Bill
Gaither and Dr. Ralph Stanley. Reserved-seat tickets are now on sale at the McKinley Box Office located in the lobby of the VRCFA. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for SSU students and seniors, and $18 for groups of 20 or more. Box-office hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program, held at SSU on Mondays from Jan. 26 to Mar. 29 from 1 to 5 p.m., will be a 10-session intensive training course focusing on better business practices. Larry Musick, manager of business and industry training at SSU, said the NxLevel course will encourage business expansion in the community. “The southern Ohio area is one that is open for business expansion,” said Musick. “Unfortunately, many people who are interested in becoming business owners in this area may not be equipped with the necessary skills to operate a business. This course seeks to bridge the gap between those entrepreneurs and the skills they need.” While there is plenty to learn from the course for those interested in starting a small business, such as comprehensive business planning, funding procurement, and opportunity identification, the course is also designed to help those who have existing businesses. Among the topics that will be covered in the program to help existing businesses are taxation and legal issues, networking information, and financial training. “Many people who start small businesses do so without a lot of business knowledge, particularly financially,” said Musick. “We will teach people how to manage their finances in the ways appropriate for a small business.” Julie Fox, program director for the Ohio State University South Center, will teach the course. The South Center partially funds the SBDC along with the U.S. Department of Small Business Administration and the Ohio Department of Development. According to Musick, after identifying the need for a small business course in the area, Fox was the logical choice. “The Portsmouth area is really in need of new business expansion and growth,” said Musick. “Offering this kind of course seemed like the next logical move, so we began planning it. We have past experience with Julie Fox, who is an expert in this area and has been doing these kinds of programs for many years, and we were happy that she agreed to do it for us.” Participants in the program will also be eligible to enter the Appalachian Ohio Business Plan Competition, a program funded by the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio and the Appalachian New Economy Partnership. Finalists will be asked to present their business plans for final judging the week of July 18, 2004. An award of $10,000 will be presented to the best start-up business plan and $10,000 to the best business plan for an existing business. “NxLeveL for Entrepreneurs” costs $398, which includes a comprehensive reference book, class handouts, and access to online learning. The deadline to register is Jan. 16. For more information, call (866) 672-8778 or (740) 351-3171. For information about special rates call (800) 860-7232. # # # FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Article by B.J. Parsons--communications specialist, SSU Office of Communications) SSU to Host Customer Satisfaction Workshop
That and other topics will be investigated during the “Targeting Success: Measuring and Improving Customer Satisfaction” workshop that will be held at Shawnee State University (SSU) on Wed., Jan. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Among the most important actions a business can take is to truly understand the needs of its customers,” said Larry Musick, manager of business and industry training at SSU. “However, most firms have no formal customer satisfaction systems in place, and those that do usually rely on ineffective surveys, which are seldom used, to drive improvement. This one-day session will explore options to generate, analyze, and use customer satisfaction data to improve business productivity.” The workshop, which will be instructed by Larry Bridges of Bridges Quality Consulting, Inc., will include such topics as creating effective surveys, complaint analysis, marketing your efforts, and customer needs and values. According to Musick, the workshop will benefit several different types of employees. “This workshop is geared for public relations/marketing personnel, customer service representatives, quality managers, and senior management,” said Musick. “However, it is also applicable to anyone with responsibility for customer relations.” “Targeting Success: Measuring and Improving Customer Satisfaction” will be held in the Micklethwaite Banquet Hall located in the University Center at SSU. The registration deadline is Jan. 21. Registration costs $149, with refreshments, lunch, and program materials provided. For more information, call (740) 351-3171. # # # FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Article by B.J. Parsons--communications specialist, SSU Office of Communications and Terry Hapney) SSU Planning for Exciting Homecoming Week Winter quarter is underway at Shawnee State University (SSU), and that means it is time for the 2004 SSU homecoming celebration. The weeklong homecoming festivities begin on Jan. 26 and end Jan. 31 with the homecoming coronation, basketball games, alumni activities, and dance. Tiffany Weaver, student activities coordinator at SSU, said this year’s homecoming week would be another popular one among the university community, SSU alumni, and area residents. “Homecoming at SSU is a special time of year for anyone associated with the university--past or present--and this year is no exception,” said Weaver. “We try to improve in our efforts every year, and this year we feel like we are certainly in a good position to do that. It is one of the biggest events of the year on campus, and we try to make it something all students and alumni can enjoy.” The greatest attractions the week of homecoming are typically the men and women’s basketball games. This year the SSU Bears will compete against Tiffin University on Saturday, Jan. 31. The women play at 2 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m. in the James A. Rhodes Athletic Center (JARAC) at SSU. The SSU homecoming king and queen will be announced at the coronation between the two games at 3.30 p.m. Prior to the games, the SSU Athletics Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Brunch will be held at 11 a.m. Roger Merb, Lanny Rice, and Kari Koehn have been elected by the SSU Athletic Alumni Association to be inducted in the SSU Hall of Fame, located in the James A. Rhodes Athletic Center. Alumni who are interested in attending should call (740) 351-3313 to RSVP for this event. At 5:30 p.m., a men’s alumni basketball game will be held, followed at 6:30 p.m. by an alumni volleyball game. Both events will be held in the JARAC. At 7 p.m., Rita Rice Morris, Ph.D., president of SSU, will speak at the SSU Alumni Awards Dinner. Alumni interested in attending this event should RSVP by calling (740) 351-3810 or by sending an e-mail message to alumni@shawnee.edu. The homecoming dance--for SSU students, alumni, and their dates--will take place from 9 p.m. until midnight, Saturday, Jan. 31, at the American Legion, 705 Court St. Admission will be charged and an SSU identification card is required to get in. Alumni are admitted free of charge. Other student activities leading up to the ballgames and homecoming dance include free movies shown in the University Center, Wax Hands and Wacky 3-D Photo booths, Music Video Mania, bull riding, and T-shirt giveaways. “We have homecoming activities all week long, usually one per day,” said Jennifer Phillips, president of SSU’s student programming board. “The reason for that is simple: we want homecoming to be a weeklong celebration to get SSU excited for the big game and the dance. Also, it provides activities for those who still want to participate in homecoming, but might choose not to attend the dance.” For more information, call (740) 351-3217. # # # FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Article by B.J.
