‘River Voices’ part of ‘Soul of a
People’ project at Shawnee State University
As part of the “Soul of a People” project at Shawnee State
University, John Lorentz, Special Assistant to the Provost
for International Program Development, presented a program,
“River Voices: A Portrait of an American River Community,”
about the 1937 flood in Portsmouth on Tuesday, Sept. 15. In
the photo, Lorentz tells some of the stories about the
flood. He and his son, Nathan, produced the documentary,
“River Voices,” about the flood. The film was chosen by the
Ohio Academy of History as a “most outstanding contribution
to Ohio Public History” and has aired on Public Television
(PBS). His lecture is part of a series of public programs
being produced with the financial support of a “Soul of a
People” grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities
and the American Library Association. SSU’s library was one
of only 30 libraries across the country to receive the
grant.
