Shawnee State
University Director of Nursing Receives Molina Healthcare
Community Champions Award
Mattie Burton, director of Nursing at Shawnee State
University, has been honored with the Molina Healthcare
Community Champions Award in a special ceremony in Columbus
on Wednesday, Sept. 9. She was nominated by SSU President
Rita Rice Morris.
Burton has been actively involved in numerous projects. She
is the board chair of the People’s Clinic in Morehead, Ky.
She applied for a grant with the Health Resources and
Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services and received $325,000 for the clinic.
“I am really proud of the clinic,” she said. “It serves so
many people.”
Burton is the outreach coordinator for Neighbor to Neighbor
Ministries in Portsmouth and works with Big Sandy Superstore
Working Well program in Franklin Furnace, Ohio.
She had a dream to get a Mobile Health Unit that would serve
the Scioto County community with health screenings and
health education and she got it. The unit allows nursing
students to provide services for the underserved.
In her nomination statement for the award, Morris said:
“Mattie Burton champions the importance of continuing health
care education and professional development opportunities
every day as director of Nursing at Shawnee State
University. … A master facilitator with an eye on the health
needs of the region, Mattie makes things happen.”
