One Plus One Mentoring Program to Begin Spring Semester
The Shawnee State University Women’s Center in collaboration
with the Math Department will be piloting their new One Plus
One mentoring program during Spring Semester 2010.
“The
program will consist of volunteer mentors from women
enrolled in Math 1010 classes,” Dr. Roberta Milliken said,
director of the Women’s Center.
The
mentors will consist of students who are interested in
mentoring the Math 1010 students, who have earned a “B” or
better in Math 1200, Math 1300 or a higher course in
mathematics. Mentors will be paid for their services.
“The
mentoring project we have created offers general tutoring
help with math,” Milliken said. “We hope that by pairing
less experienced students with more experienced students
that more support will be available in the form of general
study skills and strategies for succeeding in college and/or
math classes.”
Milliken hopes that the one-on-one time will produce a
meaningful bond between those who participate as well.
The
Math Department maintains the Math Lab in Massie 436 where
students can get help on math assignments anytime from 9
a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
on Friday.
The One
Plus One program is made possible by a generous grant from
the Shawnee State University Development Foundation. For
more information on SSUDF grants, contact the Development
Foundation at (740) 351-3284.
