Shawnee State offers Chinese language class spring semester

Nov. 23, 2011

A visiting Chinese scholar will be teaching elementary Chinese language and culture (ENGL 2999-02) for spring semester at Shawnee State University. Classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:35 p.m. in Kricker Hall, Room 153.

The instructor, Baoling Guo, MA is pursuing her doctorate in Comparative Education at South China Normal University. She will be at SSU to do research on hidden curriculum on the higher education campus. Guo is on the faculty of Shannxi Normal University for the past 10 years teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in humanities and education.

"We are very excited to have her to instruct the Chinese language class," said Professor Xiaodan Huang, Teacher Education Department. "This is a wonderful opportunity for students and the community, especially with the relationships we have formed in China."

Several students have finished their student teacher internships in China in the past several years.

Students who are not interested in pursuing a degree but who wish to take the course are required to file an application for admission. Transcripts of high school and college work are not required, nor is ACT/SAT testing.

Special, non-degree students may take courses which have no prerequisites or courses for which they have the appropriate prerequisite. For courses assuming prior knowledge or a certain degree of proficiency, placement testing may be advised or required prior to registration.

Shawnee State University admits senior citizens (60 years of age or older) for courses, on an audit, space-available basis. Although formal application and registration are required, no tuition fees are charged. Senior citizens who wish to take courses for credit may participate in the SSU Senior Scholar program, which pays tuition only. All other fees are the student's responsibility. Applications are available in the Office of Financial Aid.

To register for the class, go to the Office of the Registrar located in the University Center, second floor, open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
