The Shawnee State University Theater presents the Pulitzer Prize drama, "The Young Man from Atlanta" by Horton Foote at the Kahl Studio Theater in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts from Tuesday, Nov. 15 through Saturday, Nov. 19.
Foote won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for the play in 1995. It is the story of the Kidder family. Lily Dale and Will Kidder are mourning the death of their son, Bill. However, they differ on what they choose to believe.
Lily Dale clings to believe that her son's death was an unfortunate accident while Will struggles with the harsher reality that it was suicide. Even more disturbing to them are the attempts of their son's friend – the Young Man (of the title) – to contact them.
It seems Bill gave him a sum of money, and if the reasons for that gift are examined too closely, it might also mean having to examine secrets in their son's life about which the parents wish to remain ignorant.
This haunting story is about the illusions we weave for ourselves in an attempt to make life livable and the costs of not moving beyond them.
