The Shawnee State University Theater Department is presenting the second play of its season, Steve Martin's "The Underpants," at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14 through Saturday, Nov. 17 in the Kahl Studio Theater at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.
Adapted from German playwright Carl Sternheim's farce about 1910 Dusseldorf and the events that occurred there surrounding one woman's wardrobe malfunction, "The Underpants" tells the story of Louise Maske and her sexless marriage.
Her husband, Theobald, verbally abuses Louise as he rants and raves and belittles her constantly. When she dropped her underwear accidentally, he demands that she stay at home so she won't embarrass him anymore and jeopardize his government job.
Two potential renters who saw the event, show up looking for a room and they reveal their dreams about her. As the sudden celebrity status overwhelms her, she gives into her inhibitions and hilarity ensues.
The 2012-13 season will also feature Neil Simon's "Plaza Suite" and Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer's "Once Upon a Mattress." "Plaza Suite" will run for six days as part of the Valentine Dinner Theater Performance.
Tickets are on sale two weeks before all performances. Regular-priced tickets are $10.00, seniors, SSU faculty and staff tickets are $8.00 and SSU student tickets are $3.00.
