Shawnee State University Plans Activities for Volleyball
Alumni Weekend
Shawnee State University Volleyball Alumni Weekend has been
scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9 and Saturday, Oct. 10. On
Friday, Shawnee State will host defending AMC Champion Walsh
in a conference match-up of the AMC top competitors at 6:00
p.m.
Before the game, a ceremony will honor the 2008 volleyball
team that recorded the best record in school history with a
mark of 38-3. The Bears won the American Mideast Conference
Tournament and received its first bid to the NAIA National
Tournament, while breaking numerous school records.
Shawnee State returns eight players from last season’s team,
losing three to graduation including SSU’s first
All-American volleyball player Becca Day. Day earned First
Team All-Region honors and American Mideast Conference
honors. The team also lost NAIA Scholar Athlete and outside
hitter Samantha Emler, and defensive specialist and back-up
setter Kendra Massie.
Returning from last season’s team is second Team All-AMC
honoree Haley Halcomb and third Team honorees Jami Turrill
and Tiffany Dailey. Dailey was named an NAIA Scholar Athlete
and the 2008 team was named an NAIA Scholar Team, as they
accumulated a team grade point average of more than 3.0.
On Saturday, Shawnee State hosts a tri-match versus Malone
University and St. Francis (IN). Shawnee State will play
Malone at 11 a.m. and St. Francis at 3 p.m., with an alumni
luncheon planned between games.
The first 30 volleyball alumni to attend Saturday’s games
will receive a free shirt. Old Shawnee State jerseys will be
on sale for $10 each.
Head Coach and fellow alumni Kristy Kamer is in charge of
the alumni festivities. Kamer was named head volleyball
coach at Shawnee State in April 2006. She was a member of
the Shawnee State Volleyball Team in 1997 and 1998 and
received a degree in sports studies from SSU in 1999.
