Veterans For Peace interim director to speak at Shawnee State University

Shawnee State University's Department of Social Sciences and the Scioto Peace and Justice Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation presents Mike Ferner, interim director of the Veterans For Peace, as guest lecturer on "Afghanistan: A Country, Not a War."

He will be speaking at SSU at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17 in the Clark Memorial Library, Room 205. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Ferner has served as the national president of Veterans For Peace, and he is a member of the Toledo City Council, a union organizer for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) AFL-CIO, and as communications director for the Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee AFL-CIO.

He served as a Navy Hospital Corpsman during the Vietnam War, taking care of hundreds of wounded soldiers before being discharged as a conscientious objector.

Ferner is author of "Inside the Red Zone: A Veteran For Peace Reports from Iraq, published by Praeger in 2006.
