Upward Bound program at
SSU gives students skills
to enter college

July 21, 2011

The Shawnee State University Upward Bound program is designed for Scioto County high school students who are interested in attending college but may need an extra "push" to transform that interest into a reality.

Funded through the U.S. Department of Education, the program provides academic, social, recreational, cultural and counseling services in order to generate the skills, motivation and self-confidence necessary for success in college.

Shawnee State's program offers support to students in a target school year round with tutoring, activities, and a five-week long summer bridge program at Shawnee State. During the summer bridge program, students live on campus for the five weeks and take a college class for the summer.

The program includes art and recreational activities as well. At the end of the program, students who pass with a C or better in their academic class, and who follow the rules will be treated to a vacation. This year the students went to Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
