Shawnee State University to Offer Intensive One-Week Holocaust Course

Shawnee State University will be offering an intensive one week course covering the Holocaust from Monday, Aug. 2 to Friday, Aug. 6. The classes will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. except for Friday’s class that will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on the SSU campus.
            Professor Herbert Hochhauser of Kent State University will be one of three instructors of this course. Hochhauser was born in Berlin. He survived the war in unoccupied France and Switzerland before coming to the U.S. in 1948. He has produced 10 television documentaries that were aired on PBS dealing with the Holocaust. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded Emmys to six of these documentaries.
            Shawnee State University’s Assistant Professor Thomas Piontek also will be teaching the course. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and did his undergraduate work in Germany and England. He is the author of a book on gender and sexuality studies and has written numerous articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries on a wide range of topics including literature, cultural studies and pedagogy. Piontek along with Scott Minar are currently completing a manuscript for a book of bi-lingual poems as a paean to Paul Celan, a German-speaking Romanian Jew whose family was killed by the Nazis and was also one of the major poets of post-WW II.
            Adjunct faculty member Tom Sorosiak of Bowling Green will also be an instructor in this course. He was a social studies teacher for grade school and at the collegiate level. He presents seminars for teachers and at social studies conferences on the topics of the Holocaust and contemporary Germany. He is a Fulbright scholar, Atlantik-Brucke Fellow and in November of 2008 was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit by the President Horst Kohler from the Federal Republic of Germany.
            The class is available for graduate credit, undergraduate credit, or for non-credit purposes. Students who are enrolling in this course to receive graduate credit may register for one, two or three hours of graduate credit, awarded by Ohio University.
