Portsmouth Rotary Club has awarded the Rotaract Club of Shawnee State University the Changemaker Award.
The award recognized the club for making an extraordinary impact during 2011-12 through their work in the community.
In the past two semesters, members have recorded 2,525 hours of service in the community. Other accomplishments include:
- Co-sponsors of 9/11 Day of Service, SSU Recycles Day, Christmas on 14th Street, 2011 Alternative Winter Break Trip to Joplin, Mo., MLK Day of Service and ShamROCK the Night Away.
- Collected nearly 400 non-perishable food items for the homeless shelter.
- Collected more than $800 for breast cancer research.
- Donated personal hygiene items to Stepping Stones.
Rotaract Club is a service and leadership club for students, ages 18-30 and it was organized on campus in the 2011 Fall Semester at SSU with about 30 members.
