Shawnee SSU’s International Students
Introduced at Head Start
Shawnee State University international students attended a
Food Fair at Scioto County Head Start in Portsmouth sharing
their culture with parents, teachers and children.
“To me, it was great seeing all the families of the SCHS
children come together for this event,” said Aika Minja,
student from Tanzania. “We shared so much from each other’s
countries and culture.”
The international students talked about their countries and
explained the meaning of each of the countries’ flags. They
also had a map and showed the children their countries’
locations.
The school had cutout boards of country names and pictures
of the students from those countries.
“What really surprised us to our delight was that they had
researched and acquired recipes from our countries and
prepared the food for all to enjoy,” Minja said. “Now, that
was a real treat. The food was delicious.”
The school had also created displays about the different
countries. Each international student has a “buddy” while at
SSU and they also shared what they had learned from the
students.
“I hope we can make this an annual event, SSU bringing the
world to SCHS,” Minja said.
