Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society Inducts 121 New
Members at SSU
Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society held its annual
induction ceremony and 121 new members were inducted on
Tuesday, April 13.
Shawnee State University is the 317th Chapter that Dr. Larry
Mangus founded in 1996. As a national college scholastic
honor society, Phi Eta Sigma encourages and rewards high
scholastic attainment in institutions of higher learning.
The national honor society was organized in 1923 at the
University of Illinois and today has more than 373 chapters
in the United States and more than 968,000 members.
In 2009, more than $285,000 in scholarships was awarded to
75 undergraduate and graduate student members of Phi Eta
Sigma.
Each year, several honorary members are chosen from faculty
and staff. This year, Jennifer H. Pauley, Ph.D., assistant
professor of English and humanities, Heather R. Thacker,
academic secretary in the Mathematics Department, and John
J. Whitaker, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics, were
chosen as honorary members.
CUTLINE:
Three members of the faculty and staff were chosen as
honorary members of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society at
Shawnee State University on Tuesday, April 13, and 121
freshmen were inducted. The new honorary members are, from
left, Heather Thacker, Mathematics Department secretary,
John J. Whitaker, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics,
and Jennifer H. Pauley, Ph.D., assistant professor of
English and humanities.
