The Shawnee State University Choir and Chorale will present their Annual Spring Concert at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2 at Holy Redeemer Church in Portsmouth.
The concert, "The Musical Glories of the Renaissance," will focus on sacred and secular music of the 16th and early 17th centuries. The first half of the program will feature sacred motets by Renaissance masters such as Desprez, Victoria, Palestrina, Lassus, Byrd, Allegri and Gabrieli.
The second half of the concert will take the audience on a "Madrigal History Tour" through the countries of Italy, Spain, France, Germany and England.
The madrigal, the first "popular" musical genre, will be represented in the works of Desprez, Arcadelt, Gastoldi, Encina, Sermisy, LeJeune, Isaac, Hassler, Bennet, Dowland, Bartlett and Morley.
An organ and brass ensemble, a recorder ensemble, and guitarist Dr. Julio Alves, from Marshall University, will be featured with the choir. The concert is under the direction of Stanley Workman, Jr., Ph.D., and it is free and open to the public.
