Seminar at SSU Focuses on the Influence of Spanish Culture

Mar. 10, 2011

The Spanish cultural influence on the language is the focus of a seminar at Shawnee State University from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, Thursday, March 31, Tuesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 7, in Kricker Hall, Room 153.

"When students are learning Spanish as a second language, there are many set phrases that can only be understood by having a Spanish cultural background," said Professor Julia Coll, Ph.D., Spanish professor. "This can be a handicap for students."

The goal of this seminar is to identify some of these set phrases or cultural concepts and learn some translation strategies to understand general text and be able to translate them into English.

Professor Marta Martinez Fuertes, of Spain, will be lecturing and teaching methodology according to the Bologna Process and the translation of cultural referents from Spanish into English.

Fuertes has a degree in Translation and Interpreting from the Universitat Jaume (UJI) in Spain. She has lectured Spanish, English and Culture in many English-speaking countries.

She participates in a funded research project from the European Commission: European Parliamentary Comparable and Parallel Corpora. Fuertes has been a free-lance translator and conference interpreter for more than eight years.
