SSU participates in V-Day's 'One Billion Rising'

February 7, 2013

On Thursday, Feb. 14 at noon in the University Center, Shawnee State University will join with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.

ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime.

That is ONE BILLION WOMEN violated – one billion daughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, lovers and friends.

On Thursday, Feb. 14, V-Day's 15th anniversary, SSU will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women and girls.

The community is invited to join Shawnee State for ONE BILLION RISING at noon in the University Center lobby on Thursday, Feb. 14. View the dance, choreographed by Debbie Allen, at the following site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRU1xmBwUeA

Use the video to learn the dance with friends, family, and co-workers and join SSU on Thursday. To practice the dance with others, SSU will have the following group practices:

  • Friday, Feb. 8, 4 p.m. in Howland Recital Hall, VRCFA, Room 319;
  • Monday, Feb. 11, noon in the Clark Memorial Library Alcove;
  • Wednesday, Feb. 13, 6 p.m. in the UC Ballroom.

See the SSU Cheerleaders and Dance Team perform the dance at half-time during the Men's basketball game at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. One Billion Rising T-shirts will be on sale at the game and in the UC next week. Proceeds from the T-shirt sales will benefit the Southern Ohio Domestic Violence Shelter.
