Why: Before there was Max Weinberg and Paul Schaffer, there was the incredible Doc Severinsen, long-time bandleader on NBC’s “Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.” Doc brings his explosive musical talents and dazzling big band for a spectacular return engagement at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts at Shawnee State University on March 4 at 7:30 p.m. Having married a former Portsmouth resident, Doc, one of the world’s greatest trumpet players, considers Portsmouth his second home and always gives a performance here that is like no other.
