Contact: To news directors, editors, producers, and reporters: The Shawnee State University (SSU) Children’s Learning Center (CLC), in conjunction with the National Association for the Education of Young Children, celebrates the Week of the Young Child this week with a number of fun activities for children ages 3 - 5. Through Friday of this week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. there will be a Scholastic Book Fair at the CLC. This year’s theme is “Read a Great Tale.” Also through Friday there will be a Photo Exhibit at the CLC showcasing “Early Years are Learning Years…Make them count.” Along with the Photo Exhibit there will be a Spring Art Exhibit through Friday in the CLC Hall Gallery. On Wednesday, as part of the SSU Distinguished Lecture Series, author and educator Mimi Brodsky Chenfeld will speak in the Micklethwaite Banquet Hall on “Teaching by the Heart” from 7-9 p.m. Chenfeld has been dubbed “The Queen of Fun” and has written several books including Teaching is the Key of Life and Teaching By Heart, as well as numerous articles, stories, and poems. On Thursday, over 375 children, including children from the CLC and the Scioto County MRDD program, will be on campus for the annual Children’s Fair in the James A. Rhodes Athletic Center from 9:30 to noon. Activities include Story time from the Portsmouth Public Library, Steve Free performing children’s songs, a performance by Cirque d’Art, a chalk walk, Bear Ball with the Lady Bears Basketball team and SSU Bear mascot, and an MR/DD obstacle course. Local, regional, and statewide media outlets are invited to attend.
