Technical Services Department

The Technical Services Department (740.351.3410) located on the first floor of the library, orders, receives, and processes all materials for the library collection.

Each year we receive and process over 50,000 items in various formats including books, periodicals, micros, videos, maps, and government documents.

OUR GOALS:

  • To order, receive, and process items in a cost effective and timely manner
  • To provide access to materials by maintaining accurate records in the Library Catalog
  • To support the Public Services Department in supporting the mission of the University
  • To give library users a better understanding of our operation and services

  • What We Do -- Who We Are -- What Can We Do For You?

The Technical Services Department is divided into four areas: Acquisitions, Cataloging, Government Documents, and Serials. Please contact David Rodgers, drodgers@shawnee.edu (740.351.3410), Technical Services Librarian, if you have any questions or concerns about this department.

    Acquisitions

The Acquisitions area orders all book and media materials for the library's collection. All bibliographic information (title, price, publisher, etc.) is verified before an item is ordered. Various vendors and publishers are used to take advantage of prices and availability.

  • How do I order a book
  • Can I donate materials to the library?

  • YES -- Materials can be donated to the library. We ask donors to bring their books to the Reference Counter and to please fill out a donation slip. If you are interested in donating journals please talk to a librarian.

If you have further questions about Acquisitions, please contact: Sandy Duduit --sduduit@shawnee.edu (740.351.3453)

    Cataloging

The Cataloging area enters new and maintains old bibliographic records in SSU's online catalog. All materials are searched on OCLC (similar to WorldCat) in order to find "copy ready" records to download into Clark Memorial Library's online catalog. If there is no record available, a new one is created and then downloaded. The Cataloging area also processes (i.e. stamps, labels, etc.) all materials to prepare them for your use.

  • What if I find an error in the Clark Memorial Library or OhioLINK Catalogs?

  • -- Let us know so that we can correct the problem. Send a message to Joan Scott, jscott@shawnee.edu and include the error as well as a title or author.

If you have further questions about Cataloging, please contact:  Joan Scott--jscott@shawnee.edu (740.351.3438)

    Government Documents

The Government Documents area handles all materials (books, pamphlets, maps, cd's, etc.) which we select and receive from the Government Printing Office (GPO) as a Federal Depository Library. While the initial ordering and receiving of Government Documents differs from other library materials, in the end most documents are cataloged and processed like other materials.

  • What is a Federal Depository Library?

  • --The Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) is a partnership between the Federal Government and Libraries throughout the U.S. The SSU Library is one of 1,391 Depository Libraries that provide no-fee public access to Federal Government Information. We select approximately 11% of all materials published by various Government agencies. For more information please see "The FDLP Factsheet."

  • If you have further questions about Government Documents, please contact: Maggie Warnock--mwarnock@shawnee.edu (740.351.3515)

    Serials

The Serials area orders and receives all magazines, journals, and newspapers. The library subscribes to over 1125 periodical titles in both paper and micro formats. As issues are received, they are checked in through Clark Memorial Library's online catalog. This allows us to show you the last issue received, when the next issue is expected, or if there are any issues late or missing.

How do I order a magazine?

    "I can't find today's "New York Times?"--
The "Columbus Dispatch," "Cincinnati Enquirer," and "Portsmouth Daily Times" are the only newspapers delivered directly to the library on the day they are published. All of our other newspaper subscriptions, including the "New York Times," are received through the mail 1-3 days later.

If you have further questions about Serials, please contact: Jim Bayes--jbayes@shawnee.edu (740.351.3515)
