Information Literacy
Shawnee State's General Education Program is committed to…the goal of integrating information literacy and computer literacy into the courses included in the General Education Program.

Information literacy, "the ability to access, evaluate, and use information from a variety of sources", is a primary focus for library instruction.

It is the goal of the library instruction program of Clark Memorial Library at Shawnee State University to provide information skills to users that will serve them well into the 21st century.

An information literate person is one who:

  • Recognizes that accurate and complete information is the basis for intelligent decision-making.
  • Recognizes the need for information.
  • Formulates questions based on information needs. Identifies potential search strategies.
  • Accesses sources of information including computer-based and other technologies.
  • Evaluates information.
  • Organizes information for practical application.
  • Uses information in critical thinking and problem-solving.

Doyle, C.S. (1992) Final report to National Forum on Information Literacy.

An information literate individual will have the potential to:

  • Function successfully in an information/technology environment.
  • Be an informed citizen to participate in a democratic society.

To facilitate our information literacy goals, Clark Memorial Library conducts an ambitious Library Instruction program.

NEA ADVOCATE ONLINE promotes information literacy and information-driven teaching and learning.
