“In Depth Study: Alcohol and Drug Survey of Shawnee State University Athletes”
Courtney Butts, Shawnee State University
Mentor: Darrell Rudmann

The purpose of this study was to replicate previous research and get a better description of substance abuse by athletes at Shawnee State University. The main aspects that were focused on in relation to alcohol use were binge drinking, drinking related harms, and motives for drinking.

“Control Those Controllers!”
Eve Greene, Sherri Smith, Shawnee State University

“Assessing Population Health in Lewis County, KY
Eve Greene, Sherri Smith, Julie Carver, Shawnee State University
Mentor: Mattie Burton

This poster depicts our comprehensive community assessment of Lewis County, Ky. Clark’s Dimension Model provided the framework for the assessment. The goal was to deepen our understanding of Lewis County by assessing the physical environment, biophysical, sociocultural, psychological, behavioral, and health systems considerations and how they relate to the health status of the people who reside there.

“The Effects of Tempo and Timbre on Rat Behavior”
Lauren M. Beggs, Clint Gofenna, Brittany Lowe
Mentor: Kyle Vick

Our project takes a look at two specific elements of music-tempo and timbre, and how they specifically affect a rat’s behavior. Special CD’s were designed by musician Clint Gofenna that ensured that we neutralized these two specific elements of music. The CD’s are “slow tempo: smooth timbre”, slow tempo: harsh timbre” “fast tempo: smooth timbre” and “fast tempo: harsh timbre”. After exposing the rats to the following music selections, we will be taking data on their activity levels (measured by wheel counting devices we created), anxiety levels (using an elevated plus maze), and lastly, how pleasurable they find the music to be (by measuring the amount of time spent in a cage closer to the music, as opposed to one farther away).

“Multiple Interventions: Its Effectiveness on Second Graders’ Sight Vocabulary and Reading in Fluency”
Jessica K. McCann, Shawnee State University
Mentor: Kejing Liu

The purpose of this study was to explore effective ways to increase second graders’ reading fluency.

“The Effectiveness of Ice for Acute Injury: An Evidence-Based Evaluation”
Alicia A. Niedermeier, Shawnee State University
Mentor: Tony Ward

This presentation evaluates whether or not ice has positive effects on acute injuries. Specifically, whether applying ice to an acute injury will help the injury heal faster. Mode of ice application, duration and frequency will be discussed, as will recommendations for those working in the sports medicine arena.

“Predicting Score on the ACS General Chemistry Exam”
Dianna Wilson, Shawnee State University
Mentor: Andrew Napper

This poster demonstrates using statistical analysis to predict the overall score for students on the ACS exam through multiple regrepoison.

 “Gender Differences in Change Detection
Natalie Clark, Alissa Mays, David Mays,  Shawnee State University
Mentor: Darrell Rudmann

This poster illustrates the investigation of  gender differences in change detection. Change detection is the idea that people do not store many details of a scene in memory. We expect to find that women will have a quicker reaction time.

“Differences in Gender and Need in Altruistic Acts”
Natalie Clark, Jessica Evans, Heather Farris, Rita Hannah, David Mays, Krystal Pennington, Blake Prather, Freida Taylor
Mentor. Darrell Rudmann

This poster illustrates the investigation of whether male or female college students are more likely to help someone who has dropped what they are carrying. We also are manipulating the need for help by alternating what was dropped: a large stack of papers or a few books. We expect to find that females are helped by both genders and males are not, regardless of need.
