Off Campus Volunteer Opportunities


Shawnee State Forest

  • Shawnee State Forest is looking for volunteers to dress up as characters, make costumes, serve as trail guides, and write scripts for characters for their Enchanted Forest Project! The Enchanted Forest Project will take place during the last weekend in October 2013! Habitat for Humanity

  • Volunteers to help build needed! No experience necessary! Volunteers are also needed to bring lunches to those who are building.

Main Street Portsmouth
ASAP

  • The Main Street Portsmouth Farmer's Market is in need of a grill to use for grilling corn. Way Farms has generously agreed to donate the corn each week.
  • If anyone has an old grill that they would be willing to donate, please call our Farmer's Market Manager, Sarah Surina at 740-821-4457. A charcoal grill is preferable.

Time Out for Me (Youth Program)
14th Street Community Center
Every Wednesday, 4pm – 7:30pm

  • Time Out for Me is a youth program that is run out of the 14th Street Community Center. Volunteers are needed especially during the summer because the children are taken on afternoon trips.

South Central Ohio Big Brothers Big Sisters

  • What if every child was sent on the right path? What if every child stayed in school? Graduated college? Got a job? Gave back to the community? What if every child's potential was fulfilled? What could that start? It could be the start of something BIG.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs caring community mentors with children who need positive and thoughtful role-models in their lives. South Central Ohio Big Brothers Big Sisters has a number of ways YOU can volunteer and help the children in your community:
  • Be a Big Brother or a Big Sister: If you are 21 or older and are interested in mentoring a child for 2-3 hours a week for a minimum of one year please apply to be a Big Brother or a Big Sister. We need Men, Women, and Couples to mentor one of the 100+ 6-17 year old children on our waiting list.
  • Be a Big For a Day: Attend and help at one of our monthly free (and fun!) events we offer for the children in our programs. Please call the office for an up-to-date spring and summer calendar and to volunteer 2-6 hours of your time at an event.

Blue Star Mothers, Adopt a Marine!

  • For many young Marines (19-24 years old), military deployment is their first time away from family and home. For most, it is also the first time out of the U.S. No matter age or travel status, many Marines get very, very few (or no) pieces of mail for their entire deployment (usually a year)! This is an absolute travesty!

14th Street Community Center

  • The 14th Street Community Center is always looking for volunteers! They host a variety of afterschool programs for children daily and can always use tutors and students who could teach the children they serve how to play the drums, Spanish, how to set goals, work on motor skills, and how to listen!

St. Vincent DePaul Clothing and Variety Store

  • Interested in working with clothing? St. Vincent DePaul Clothing and Variety Store is always looking for volunteers! The monies from the store provide food for St. Vincent's pantry, clothing et cetera for burn out victims and needy families. The prices are kept low to help area people who cannot afford Good Will.

  • Help is needed with fall plantings in the flower beds throughout the park!
  • Invasive Species Eradication: You will be using hand tools and the work is slightly laborious, so be prepared! Bring gloves.

Wheelersburg UMC
Every 3rd Tuesday, 9am—11am & Thursdays, 2:45pm—5pm

  • Help needed every 3rd Tuesday with the food pantry from 9am—11am. Volunteers will help carry food to vehicles and must be able to lift 25lb grocery bags.
  • Volunteers are also needed every Thursday afternoon from 2:45pm—5pm to work with Shining Light Station, an after school program for children.
