SSU Recycling Initiative

Once A Week, All Year

This is a campus wide door to door recycling program. Student volunteers typically pick up anywhere from 900 – 1200 gallons if recyclables a week. In the past this has taken 20 minutes to 2 hours depending on how many volunteers we have. While this program was meant to serve SSU, Portsmouth and our earth and help keep recyclables out of the landfills, the program was also meant to serve our students

Portsmouth Pantry Garden

All of Fall Semester

The Pantry Garden aims to provide fresh, healthy produce to individuals and families in need in the Portsmouth community through the distribution of harvested food to local pantries. The garden is slightly over an acre and is run entirely by two Summer Associate VISTAS! Unfortunately, the summer VISTAS are only here for 8 weeks during June and July—we need your help to maintain and harvest the garden in their absence!

Volunteer Fair

Tuesday, August 30th, 11am – 5pm

Looking for an opportunity to volunteer? Whether you're just looking for an opportunity to get involved in your local community, you have to volunteer for a class or team or maybe you were sanctioned community service, this volunteer fair is for you! 20 community agencies will come to SSU and set up displays in the UC lobby to showcase the volunteer opportunities they have to offer.

iServe Workshop, Why Volunteer?

Wednesday, September 7th, 7pm – 8:30pm

This workshop/open discussion will take place in the Flohr Lecture hall and will focus on the benefits of volunteering to both the student volunteer and the local community. Resources/contacts for volunteer opportunities in the area will also be discussed and be available.

September 11th Day of Service and Remembrance

Saturday, September 10th, 8am – 6pm

In 2002 President George W. Bush declared September 11 "Patriot Day" to honor both the victims and heroes of the September 11 attacks, and highlight the spirit of service. Since 2002, Patriot Day has changed and evolved and on September 11, 2009 was officially and permanently made a National Day of Service and Remembrance by President Obama. Join SSU students, faculty and staff as we all take part of this national movement to support charitable causes, perform good deeds and engage in other service activities in observance of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Red Cross Blood Drive

Wednesday, September 21st, 10am – 4pm

Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. Only five percent of the eligible United States population donates blood in any given year. Why? In the U.S. someone needs a blood transfusion every two to three seconds, and 95 percent of all Americans will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. Sign up to donate blood on campus…help save a life!

Empty Bowls

Saturday, September 24th, 9am – 1pm

Please join us during Parents' Weekend to paint handcrafted bowls made by local potters, craftspeople and educators! You can either buy your bowl to take home or donate it to Shawnee State to use during our Empty Bowls Fundraiser. During the Empty Bowls Fundraiser, students, faculty and staff will be invited to share a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to a local food pantry working to end hunger and food insecurity.

Operation Christmas Child Guest Speaker, John Holden

Want to learn more about Operation Christmas Child? Come meet guest speaker John Holden! John Holden has served with Operation Christmas Child since 2004. He joined the project as the International Logistics Coordinator and served for five years as Regional Director for South and East Africa.

iServe Workshop, Alternative Break Trip!

Wednesday, October 5th, 7pm – 8:30pm

This workshop/open discussion will take place in the Flohr Lecture hall and will focus on winter and spring break opportunities. Students who have been on these trips will give the presentation. They'll cover information about past and upcoming trips.

Operation Christmas Child Drive

All of October

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan's Purse that strives to send Christmas gifts and spread Christianity through the distribution of shoe boxes filled with tangible goods to needy children around the world. Want to help? Pack a shoe box or join help wrap shoe boxes at our packing party!

CROP Hunger Walk

Sunday, October 16th, 2pm

CROP Hunger Walk is to raise awareness and funds locally to fight hunger in the Portsmouth community and around the world through the sponsorship of Church World Service.

Join SSU students, faculty and staff in this fun run….dressed in your Halloween Costume! Donate $5 and run, jog or walk to help SSU raise money for the American Cancer Society!
