The Shawnee State
University Women’s Soccer Team returns 11 players, including 7
starters from last year’s 4-14 squad. The Bears return 95% of the
offensive output form the 2005 season. Rounding out the roster are
9 solid recruits. “With the mix of experienced upperclassmen and
the talented incoming freshmen, I am confident that the Bears will
have a respectable 2006 season,” said first year coach Rob Appell.
The Bears will be
led in the midfield by senior captain Kelly Hatas (Springfield,
OH). Hatas, holds the record for Shawnee State for career points
with 54 and career assists with 20. Other midfielders returning to
the squad this season are senior Beth Eichelberger (Springfield, OH)
and sophomore Kristi Jarrell (Springfield, OH). Newcomers to the
midfield include Staci White (Chillicothe, OH), Courtney Moore
(Georgetown, OH), Lacie Abella (Zanesville, OH), Savoeung Ien
(Columbus, OH), and Danielle Marion (Lucasville, OH). White, a
three-time all-district selection, compiled 19 goals and 31 assists
over the course of her career at Zane Trace High School.
Leading the offense
will be junior Sarah Koehler (Sardinia, OH). Koehler, who was
Honorable Mention All-AMC last season, already holds Shawnee State
record for goals in a career with 24. She also holds the records
for goals in a season with 13 and points in a season with 28. Also
returning to the forward position are senior Lacey Simpson (Hammersville,
OH) and sophomore Amy Crain (Catlettsburg, KY). Joining the
forwards is freshman Lana Kaucher (Cincinnati, OH).
Defensively the
Bears should be solid. They will be led by senior captain Amanda
Plotts (Circleville, OH) and junior captain Amanda Jay (Dayton,
OH). Also returning to the defensive end are seniors Ashley Fender
(Sardinia, OH), and Julie Mahalik (Hillsboro, OH) and sophomore
Katie Garrison (Circleville, OH). Joining the backfield is freshmen
Elise Histed (Mansfield, OH). Histed tallied over 60 assists over
her career at Mansfield High School.
Freshmen Sam Rolsen
will get the nod at the net this season. Fender and Kaucher will be
backups for the goal keeper position.
“I am excited to
get started with a fresh new season,” said Coach Appell. “We have a
lot of talent as well as senior leadership returning from last
year’s team. Many players were able to gain quality experience over
the course of last season.”
