NAIA FEATURES STORY ABOUT BEARS' HEAD COACH ROBIN HAGEN-SMITH

Kansas City, Mo. Shawnee State (Ohio) head women’s basketball coach Robin Hagen-Smith is one of the most storied coaches in the NAIA.  She became the head coach at the age of 22 and posted a 76-52 record in her first five years.  In 1988, Shawnee State became a four-year school and Hagen-Smith has recorded an overall record of 590-146 ever since.  The record ranks sixth all-time among NAIA Division I and II women’s basketball coaches.

COACH ROBIN HAGEN-SMITH INDUCTED INTO NAIA HALL OF FAME
Shawnee State Head Coach Robin Hagen-Smith was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.  The ceremony took place during the opening ceremony of the Division II NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, IA on March 8th.

Robin Hagen-Smith started her coaching career in 1983 when Shawnee State was still a community college.  In 1989 she guided the Bears transition from community college into the NAIA as a four-year institution.  In her 27 years of coaching, Robin Hagen-Smith has posted an overall record of 640-187 and is one of the NAIA all-time winningest active coaches and overall winningest coaches ever.  During her tenure at Shawnee State she has led the Bears to 17 national tournament appearances, 10 conference championships, National Runner-up in 2010, and a National Championship in 1999.  Hagen-Smith has received many coaching awards that include MOC, AMC and MSC Coach of the Year honors seven times, 1997-1998 WBCA IKON Coach of the Year, 1999 NAIA National Coach of the Year, 1999 Dispatch Women's Ohio Basketball Coach of the Year, and in 2008 was named the NAIA Region IX Coach of Character. 

This season, Coach Smith guided the Bears to a 27-10 record, including a mark of 13-5 in the Bears' inaugural season in the Mid-South Conference. After finished runner-up in the MSC Tournament, Shawnee State made an incredible tournament run that saw the Bears in the Fab Four for the second consecutive year.

Hagen-Smith played basketball for Shawnee State Community College from 1979-1981 and then transferred to the University of Rio Grande.  In 1989 she was inducted into the Rio Grande Athlete Hall of Fame and in 1998 she was inducted into the South Webster Hall of Fame.  She received the Portsmouth Spirit of Leadership Award in 1999.  Hagen-Smith was inducted into Shawnee State's Athletic Hall of Fame with the Inaugural Class in 2000 and was inducted in 2009 as part of the NAIA National Championship Team.  In 2010 she was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. 

Coach Hagen-Smith is also active off the court as she is a full-time faculty member at Shawnee State, Shawnee State's Champions of Character Liaison and is also active in her church.  Hagen-Smith and her husband, Gregg, who has been her assistant since 1988, have two children, Ali and Aleza.

BALLMAN NAMED  SECOND TEAM ALL-TOURNAMENT; THIRD TEAM ALL-AMERICA

After leading the Bears to their second consecutive Fab Four and 2nd place in the Mid-South (13-5) junior guard Abby Ballman was named 2nd Team All-Tournament and 3rd Team All-America.

The Cincinnati native was the Bears' general on the floor playing over 35 minutes a game and averaged 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. Ballman ranks in the NAIA Top 25 in five different categories.  Her 117 steals on the season, ranks 3rd in the NAIA and ties her previous record set last year for most in a season for the Bears. She also ranks 10th in the NAIA in total assists (164), 11th in steals per game (3.16), 17th in assists per game (4.43) and 22nd in free throw percentage (81.6%).  Ballman earned 1st Team All Mid-South conference.

During the tournament, Ballman averaged over 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals per game, leading the Bears on an outstanding post season run making it to the NAIA Fab Four for just the fourth time in school history.

THREE BEARS NAMED NAIA SCHOLAR ATHLETES
3/23/2011

Seniors Jill Cropper and Keilee Guthrie and junior Abby Ballman were named NAIA Scholar Athletes.  To be eligible to be NAIA Scholar Athlete, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status to qualify. 

Cropper, a senior from Georgetown, Ohio is a dual major in Physical Therapy Assistant and Exercise Science.

Guthrie, a senior from Albany, Ohio majors in Sports Management.   

Ballman, a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio is a Psychology major. 

This is the third time Cropper has received this honor and the second for Guthrie and Ballman.

HAGEN-SMITH NAMED COY; BALLMAN NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE, CROPPER EARNED HONORABLE MENTION

In just their first season in the Mid-South Conference, Head Coach Robin Hagen-Smith led the Bears to a tie for 2nd place with a 13-5 conference mark.  With this feat, Robin Hagen-Smith was selected Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year by her fellow coaching peers.  This is the seventh time in her career that Coach Hagen-Smith has earned this honor. 

Campbellsville's Whitney Ballinger was named Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  Ballinger led the MSC in scoring, blocks and double-doubles and second in rebounding.  The senior averaged over 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game as she led the Tigers to a regular-season title. 

For the Bears junior Abby Ballman was selected to the all-conference team, while senior Jill Cropper earned Honorable Mention All-MSC status. 

Ballman, the Bears' point guard from Cincinnati, OH, tops the Mid-South with 100 steals on the season.  This season she leads the Bears in points (13.9 per game), steals (3.03 per game) and assists (4.4 per game).  At the line she has accumulated a 82.6% free throw average, which also leads the Bears.  She also ranks second on the team with 18 blocks on the season.

Cropper, a center from Georgetown, OH, is second on the team averaging 12.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.  She has also accumulated 43.9% percentage from the floor to go along with 43 assists, 17 steals and 11 blocks on the season.

FIVE BEARS EARN MSC ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE

Five Shawnee State women's basketball players earned Mid-South Conference Academic All-Conference honors Wednesday night at the MSC banquet in Frankfort, KY.  To be eligible a student-athlete must be of sophomore, junior or senior and maintain a grade point average of 3.25.  Earning this honor for the Bears were sophomores Allison Nagle and Tristan Rumfield, junior Abby Ballman, and seniors Keilee Guthrie and Jill Cropper. 

Allison Nagle, a guard from Milford, OH is a Middle Childhood Education major. 

Tristan Rumfield, a guard from Bainbridge, OH majors in Middle Childhood Education.

Abby Ballman, a guard/forward from Cincinnati, OH is a Psychology major.

Keilee Guthrie, a forward from Albany, OH majors in Sport Management.

Jill Cropper, a center from Georgetown, OH is a dual major in Exercise Science and Physical Therapy Assistant.

 
 
BEARS EARNS No. 2 SEED IN MSC TOURNAMENT
2/28/2011

The Shawnee State Women's Basketball Team earned the No. 2 seed in the Mid-South Conference Tournament.  The Bears will face the winner of the West Virginia Tech and Pikeville game on Thursday, March 3 at 6:00 p.m. in the MSC Quarterfinals at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Kentucky.

GUTHRIE NAMED MSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
1/25/2011

Senior Keilee Guthrie (Albany, OH) was named Mid-South Conference Player of the Week for games ending January 22.

Guthrie averaged 16.5 points and five rebounds per game for the Bears as they defeated West Virginia Tech and rival Rio Grande.

Guthrie tied a career-high 19 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 68-54 win over West Virginia Tech on Thursday night.  She tallied 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and six rebounds in Shawnee State's 7068 overtime win over University of Rio Grande on Saturday. 

On the week she shot 47.9% from the floor, connecting on 9-of-19 shots.  She hit seven 3-pointers out of 12 attempts for 58.4%.  At the line she connected on 6-of-7 free throws on the week. 

On the season, Guthrie averages 8.9 points and 2.6 rebounds.

 
BALLMAN NAMED MSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
1/18/2011

Junior Abby Ballman (Cincinnati, OH) was named Mid-South Conference Player of the Week for games ending January 15. 

Ballman averaged 20 points and 6.5 assists while leading the Bears to wins over nationally ranked Lindsey Wilson College and University of the Cumberlands. 

Ballman led the Bears with 19 points and handed out six assists in Shawnee State's 72-69 win over No. 13 ranked Lindsey Wilson on Thursday night.  Ballman also had two blocks and three steals.

Ballman had 21 points and seven assists in the Bears' 75-62 win over No. 16 ranked Cumberlands.  She added six steals. 

For the week, Ballman hit 40.7% from the floor, including going 5-for-10 in 3-pointers.  She was also perfect from the line hitting 13-of-13 attempts. 

On the season, Ballman averages 14.5 points and four assists per game.  She ranks 13th in the Mid-South in scoring and seventh in assists per game. 

 
PIONEER'S ERIN DAILEY SIGNS TO PLAY BASKETBALL AT SSU

Zane Trace High School's Erin Dailey has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Shawnee State University. 

Dailey is a four-year letter winner in basketball for the Pioneers.  She averaged 11 points, seven rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals for game.

While attending Shawnee State, Dailey plans to study Occupational Therapy.

This is Shawnee State's first year competing in the Mid-South Conference.

BEARS SIGN MINERVA'S KASSIDY HARDGROVE
12/13/2010

Minerva High School's Kassidy Hardgrove as signed a letter of intent to continue her basketball career at Shawnee State University. 

Hardgrove is a four-year letter winner in basketball for the Lions and has helped guide the Lions to a 53-18 record the past three years, including to the Regional Finals in 2010.  As a junior she averaged over 11 points per game and was named 1st Team All-Northeastern Buckeye Conference and 1st Team All-Stark County.  She broke Minerva's school record for 3-point goals in a single game as she tallied eight versus Northwest. 

Hardgrove has also earned varsity letters in track twice as well as cross country, softball and soccer once.  As a junior she earned 1st Team All-NBC honors in track and placed 8th at the State Meet.  She holds track records in the 800 meters, 4 x 200, 4 x 400, and the 4 x 800. 

While attending Shawnee State, Hardgrove will be majoring in Education. 

This is Shawnee State's first year competing in the Mid-South Conference.

CROPPER NAMED MID-SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK
12/13/2010

Senior Jill Cropper (Georgetown, OH) was named Mid-South Conference Player of the Week for games ending December 11. 

Cropper averaged 20 points and six rebounds per game last week helping the Bears to a perfect 2-0 week.

The center scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds in a 75-46 win over Roberts Wesleyan College in the opening night of the Shawnee State Tournament.  On the final day of the tournament she scored a career-high 28 points as the Bears defeated NAIA Division II No. 17 ranked Daemen.

On the week, Cropper shot over 60% from the field, including 2-for-4 beyond the arc.  At the line she went 10-for-11 for 91%.

On the season she averaged over 12 points and five rebounds per game.  

This conference award is the first of the season for Cropper.

 
COACH ROBIN HAGEN-SMITH TO BE INDUCTED INTO NAIA HALL OF FAME

Coach Robin Hagen-Smith already has a long list of accomplishments on her resume; however March 2011 she can add the highest honor yet: induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame.  Hagen-Smith joins an elite group of 20 individuals that will be inducted this year including Scottie Pippen and Bill Odell.

"It is an incredible honor to be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame," said Coach Robin Hagen-Smith.  "I am proud to be affiliated with the NAIA organization and all it represents.  I would like to thank all the players and staff who have been associated with our basketball program at Shawnee State University.  It has been a rewarding experience for me to coach so many outstanding student athletes who have contributed greatly to our success.  I have truly been blessed, and it has been a privilege to be involved in the teaching and coaching profession over the years."
