2008 - 2009 Women's Basketball

 

BABIONE AND ALBERS NAMED ALL-AMERICAN
American Mideast Conference Player of the Year Becky Babione can add another honor to her already extensive resume as she was named to the All-American First Team, while Mallory Albers earned All-American Third Team recognition. 

Babione, a senior forward from Fremont, Ohio, was named All-American honorable mention status last season and becomes the third women’s basketball player in SSU history to earn All-American honors twice. Babione averaged 12.8 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, 1.4 steals, and 1 assist per game this season, and was twice named AMC Player of the Week.  Over her four-year career she has helped the Bears tally an overall record of 102 wins and 20 losses and capture back-to-back American Mideast Conference Championships.  She holds all of Shawnee State records for blocks, including 9 in a game, 91 in season, and 251 in her career.

Albers, a junior guard from Fort Loramie, Ohio was named to All-American Third Team, after leading the Bears in scoring and steals with 15.0 and 2.7 per game.  She also averaged 4.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists this season. Albers earned 1st Team All-American Mideast Conference this season after earning 3rd Teams status last season.  Albers was also named an NAIA Scholar Athlete.

Shawnee State ended their season 31-1 in the Sweet Sixteen at the NAIA National Tournament, after concluding the regular season with a perfect mark of 30-0.

 
FIVE BASKETBALL PLAYERS TABBED SCHOLAR ATHLETES
Five players from the Shawnee State women’s basketball team have been named Scholar Athletes.  Senior Kelly Wagner leads the honors along with juniors Mallory Albers, Jill Cropper, Allison Meyer, and Whitney Williams.  Criteria for being selected an NAIA Scholar Athlete is that an athlete must be of junior rank and carry a 3.5 grade point average or above.
 

BABIONE NAMED AMC PLAYER OF YEAR, HAGEN-SMITH NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR
Becky Babione was voted American Mideast Conference Player of the Year.  Babione is one of four Bears to be named All-American Mideast Conference, while Head Coach Robin Hagen-Smith was voted AMC Coach of the Year. 

Babione, a six-foot senior from Fremont, Ohio averaged 13.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.3 rebounds per game for the Bears.  Babione has tallied 13 double-doubles this season.  She currently holds all of Shawnee State’s record for blocks; game (9), season (91), and career (250).

Joining Babione on All-AMC First Team is Mallory Albers.  Albers, a 5-7 junior from Fort Loramie, Ohio lead the Bears in scoring with 15.4 points and steals with 2.8 steals per game. 

Kelly Wagner and Alison Meyer were named 2nd Team All-AMC.  Wagner, a 5-9 senior from Wayne, Ohio averaged 10.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Meyer, a 6-0 junior from Hamler, Ohio averaged 10.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. 

Robin Hagen-Smith was chosen American Mideast Conference Coach of the Year.  This is the sixth time Hagen-Smith has received this honor.

Shy Johnson and Bianca Barton each were named to the AMC Freshman Team.  Johnson, a 5-6 guard from Cincinnati, Ohio averaged 10.6 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.  Barton, a 5-8 guard from Pontiac, Michigan averaged 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and lead the team with 4.5 assists per game.

The NAIA Division II No. 2 rank Bears boast an overall record of 30-0 and 15-0 in AMC action.  The Bears will continue their season in the NAIA Division II National Tournament that begins Wednesday, March 11 in Sioux City, Iowa.

 

 

BABIONE NAMED AMC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SSU's Becky Babione has been named AMC's women's basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season.  She was named Player of Week after averaging 17.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks in two more win for the NAIA Division II No. 2 Bears.

Babione, a six-foot senior from Fremont, Ohio, exploded for 21 points, 17 rebounds, and five blocks in a 78-60 victory at Ohio Dominican which ended the Panthers' six-game home winning streak.  She followed that up with 14 points and 14 boards in an 82-61 win versus Northwestern Ohio.

For the week, Babione made 50 percent of her shots from the field including a 56 percent accuracy outside the arc.  She shot 75 percent at the charity strip to go along with seven blocks, two steals, and two assists.

SHAWNEE STATE REMAIN No. 2 IN NAIA DIVISION II

No. 2 Shawnee State as well as No. 1 Morningside (Iowa) are the only two undefeated teams left standing in the sixth NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Top 25 rating of the 2008-09 season.

The Bears, 21-0 overall and 7-0 AMC, racked up 392 points while the 23-0 Mustangs, who are located in Sioux City, Iowa which annually hosts the national tournament, earned all 15 first-place votes and 405 points.

Cedarville, 14-5 and 5-2 AMC, advanced five spots to No. 18 while Daemen, also 14-5 and 5-2 AMC, is at No. 24.  Rio Grande and Walsh picked up votes. [2008-09 Division II Women's Basketball Top 25 - Rating #6]

 
SHAWNEE STATE REMAINS #2 IN NAIA
The undefeated Shawnee State Women’s Basketball Team remain No. 2 in NAIA Division II behind Morningside (Iowa). Shawnee State holds a 15-0 overall record and is 1-0 in conference play. Cedarville and Daemen also make the list to represent the American Mideast Conference as Cedarville ranks No. 13 and Daemen No. 22. Rio Grande and Notre Dame also received votes. [Rating #3]
 
SSU WOMEN TAKE TIME TO READ TO ELEMENTARY CHILDREN
The Shawnee State Women's Basketball Team, which is ranked 2nd in NAIA Division II, isn't just all about basketball.  The undefeated Bears also take time out of their busy basketball schedule to show children the importance of reading, by spending a day reading and listening to elementary students at Notre Dame.

BABIONE NAMED AMC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Shawnee State forward Becky Babione is the AMC women's basketball Player of the Week for her effort in games played on December 15-21.

Babione, a 6-0 senior from Fremont, Ohio, averaged a double-double to lead the NAIA Division II No. 2 Bears to a pair of wins at the Nova Southeastern (FL) Classic to push their record to 12-0 overall.

Babione scored 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds during a 104-52 rout of Siena Heights.  She came back with 21 points and 15 boards in a 69-65 win versus No. 19 Cardinal Stritch.

Babione averaged 21.5 points and 16 rebounds per game with four blocked shots.  She shot 55 percent from the field overall, 50 percent outside the arc, and 61.5 percent at the free throw line.

 
BEARS MOVE UP TO #2 IN NATIONAL POLLS
The undefeated Shawnee State Women’s Basketball Team moves up one spot to be rated No. 2 in the second NAIA Division II women’s basketball poll of the season. The Bears who are 9-0 overall fall only behind Morningside (Iowa), who received the unanimous No. 1 choice.  Cedarville also represents the American Mideast Conference as they get a No. 18 rating. Rio Grande, Daemen, and Notre Dame also received votes. [Rating #2]
 

SSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM FORECASTED TO WIN THE AMC
The Shawnee State Women’s Basketball Team was picked #1 in the pre-season poll conducted by the league coaches to repeat as AMC Champions in 2008-09.  The Bears earned 12 out of 16 possible first-place votes to tallied 248 points.  Daemen, who lost to Shawnee State 80-56 in the AMC Championship game last season, took second place on the poll as they accumulated one-first place vote and 222 points.

Shawnee State won the AMC South Division last season as Daemen took the North Division.  This year the American Mideast Conference has changed the format from North and South Divisions and combined the teams into one division.  All 16 schools that make up the AMC will play one another once in conference action. 

The AMC will be granted three automatic bids to the 32-team national tournament.  The top two teams in the regular season standings earn bids.  The final bid will go the winner of the AMC post-season tournament.
