Robin Hagen-Smith
just completed her 27th year as Women's
Head Basketball Coach at Shawnee State University with an overall
record of 640-187. She began her tenure in 1983 as SSU competed in
the NJCAA as a junior college, where she posted a 76-52 record. In
1988, Robin helped Shawnee State make the transition from a two-year
college to a four-year college in the NAIA. Since 1988, Coach
Hagen-Smith has posted a record of 564-135, ranking her one of the
all-time winningest active coaches and overall winningest coaches
ever in the NAIA.
During the 2009-2010 season, Coach
Hagen-Smith helped lead the team to their first-ever NAIA Division
II National Runner-up Title. In 2008-2009, Coach Hagen-Smith added
to her resume a perfect regular season mark of 29-0, while winning
her tenth conference championship as the Bears' finished 15-0. She
has led the Bears to seventeen national tournament appearances
finishing with 11 Sweet Sixteen's, two Elite Eight's, one Final
Four, one National Runner-up, and a National Championship in 1999.
From 1997-2002, the Bears won six straight conference
championships. Robin has received many coaching awards that include
MOC and AMC Coach of the Year (six times), 1997-1998 WBCA IKON Coach
of the Year, 1998-1999 NAIA National Coach of the Year, 1998-1999
Dispatch Women's Ohio College Basketball Coach of the Year, and in
2007-2008 was named the NAIA Region IX Coach of Character Award
Winner.
Hagen-Smith's basketball success at Shawnee
State began in 1979 when she played for Shawnee State Community
College before transferring in 1981 to the University of Rio
Grande. It was there that she finished her playing career in 1983.
In 1989 she was inducted into the Rio Grande Athlete Hall of Fame.
In 1998 she was inducted into South Webster (Ohio) Hall of Fame.
She received the Portsmouth Spirit of Leadership Award in 1999. She
was inducted into the Shawnee State University Athletic Hall of Fame
in 2000. In 2009 she was inducted into the Shawnee State University
Athletic Hall of Fame again, this time she was joined as the entire
1999 National Championship Women's Basketball Team entered the Hall
of Fame. Coach Hagen-Smith was just inducted on May 22, 2010 into
the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame as an outstanding coach in women's
college basketball. The 1999 National Championship Team was also
inducted as an outstanding college women's basketball team.
Hagen-Smith received her bachelors degree
in Physical Education/Health from Rio Grande in 1983. In 1984 she
received her masters degree in Education from Xavier University.
She is a full-time faculty member at Shawnee State.
Robin and her husband, Gregg, reside in Portsmouth
with their daughters Ali and Aleza.
