The Shawnee State Volleyball team returns eight players and four starters from last year’s 12-19 squad.  With graduation claiming only two seniors from last year’s team and the addition of outstanding recruiting class of eight, second year coach Kristy Kamer is looking forward to the upcoming season.  “We are expecting an exciting year,” said Coach Kamer.  “We have a great incoming class and are excited about the chemistry between our returnees and freshmen.”

Leading the team this season is junior middle hitter Becca Day (Beaver, OH).  Day earned 2nd Team All-AMC last season.  Other returning upperclassmen for the Bears include seniors Adair Piguet (Sciotoville, OH), Sarah Pattee (Gahanna, OH) and junior Samantha Emler (Howard, OH).  Also returning are sophomores Kendra Massie (Wheelersburg, OH), Sarah Barney (Portsmouth, OH), and Anicca Miller (Arcanum, OH).

Additions to the Bears squad include freshman setter Haley Halcomb (Frankfort, OH) and freshman middle hitter Heather Koehler (Russellville, OH).  Halcomb was named District 14 Player of the Year and named All-Ohioan during her career at Adena High School.  Koehler is a two-time All-Ohioan in volleyball and earned Academic All-Ohio honors.  Also new are freshmen middle hitter Chelsea Howard (Beaver, OH), defensive specialist Rachel Wolford (Kingsville, OH), and outside hitters Addie Tuckerman (Wauseon, OH), Tara Knauff (Chillicothe, OH).  Also new to the team is transfer defensive specialist Tiffany Dailey (Chillicothe, OH).

“Everyone has been working hard in the off season to make the volleyball program stronger,” said Kamer.  “We had a great non-league season last year and are looking to keep that up but add wins in our league, which we can do if we stay strong, healthy and positive.”

Shawnee State opens their season on the road with a quad-match at Asbury on Saturday, September 1.  The Bears return home on Tuesday, September 4 to play Ohio Valley.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the James A. Rhodes Athletic Center.
