May 7 vs. Notre Dame (AMC Tournament)
Shawnee State softball team won a back-and-forth battle by a score of 4-1 in game six of the American Mideast Conference Tournament to advance to the elimination game.  Shawnee State struck first on a blast by Ericka Leighty over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the first inning.  Neither team was able to generate much offense until the Falcons struck for two runs in the top of the fourth.  Christine Kasidonis started it with a sharp slice to third.  Jones laid down a bunt single and advanced pinch runner Gaby Maurer to second.  After Daniels recorded two consecutives outs it looked as if the Bears would escape the threat.  However, an error plated Maurer from 3rd followed by an RBI single by Mallory Harder to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.  The Bears however quickly responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning stringing together singles by Ashley Speas and Jazel DeAutremont.  After back-to-back singles, Jourdan Priddy gave the Bears the lead with an RBI single.  Katie Daniel didn’t allow a hit the rest of the way to record her 14th win of the season.  The Bears added an insurance run in the 6th on an RBI double by Barrett.  Ericka Leighty went 3-for-3 at the plate and had a stolen base in the game.  [Box Score]

The Bears fell short in the elimination game as they lost to Notre Dame 10-6.  Notre Dame did not waste anytime to get on the board, as their lead off hitter hit a homerun to centerfield to begin the game.  Notre Dame then added to their lead as they totaled six runs in third inning.  Harder got the Falcons rolling as she singled through the middle Candace Shofar then laid down a bunt single and then Charisse Colston loaded the bases as she reached on a Shawnee State error.  Melissa Dykes then drew up a walk, scoring Harder.  Felisha Jones then reached on a fielder's choice, but a Shawnee State error on the play, scoring Dykes and Colston.  Michelle Dykes then hit a two-run homerun to cap off the six run innings and extend the Falcons lead to 7-0.  The Bears scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third.  DeAutremont led off with a single to center field and then advanced to second on a single by freshman Jamie Clevenger.  Leighty then brought in the Bears' run as she singled to center field.  Shawnee State committed three errors in the fourth, allowing the Falcons to add to their lead by scoring two more runs.  In the bottom of the fifth the Bears rallied to cut Notre Dame lead.  Sam Attinger led off the inning and reached as she was hit by a pitch, then pinch runner Stephenie Andronis advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Speas singled to the shortstop, advancing Andronis to third.  Priddy loaded the bases as she was hit.  DeAutremont hit a double, scoring all three base runners.  Clevenger drove DeAutremont in on a single to right field, and then scored on a single by Brooke Baker, cutting the Falcons lead to 9-6.  The Bears could not manage to score another run the rest of the game and Notre Dame capped off their victory with a run in the top of the seventh to go on to win the American Mideast Conference Tournament Championship 10-6.  Ali Thompson was tagged with the loss as she pitched a complete game allowing 10 runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks.  Shawnee State, the American Mideast Conference regular season champions, completes the 2010 season with a record of 28-24. May 6 vs. Walsh (AMC Tournament)

The Bears went on to play in Game 5 against the Walsh University Cavaliers.  Erika Leighty got the offense rolling for the Bears in the second game of the day as she drew a one out walk and then stole second to move into scoring position.  Catcher Abby Barrett singled to the left side and allowed Leighty to use her speed as she crossed the plate to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.  Brooke Baker and Sam Attinger both singled to load the bases.  Walsh pitcher Erin Erbert then threw a wild pitch and allowed Barrett to score the Bears final run of the game.  The Cavaliers couldn’t get their offense going against pitcher Ali Thompson.  Thompson tossed a complete shut out game while only allowing two hits.  Barrett went 2-for-3 in the game with a run and a RBI.  Leighty also went 1-for-2 with a run and a stolen base.  “We got some offensive looks in the second game today,” stated Cole.  “If you’re going to be a champion you have to work hard and take advantages when they arise.  If we can do that tomorrow we will be champions.”  [Box Score

 
May 6 vs. Notre Dame (AMC Tournament)
Day two of the American Mideast Conference Tournament found the Bears facing off against the Falcons of Notre Dame.  The Bears had no answer to Notre Dame’s pitcher Ashley Harbarger, as she pitched a complete game shut out while only allowing three hits.  Notre Dame mirrored what the Bears had done offensively against Malone in Game 2.  The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning but it was the fifth that proved costly for SSU.  The Falcons provided the run support throughout the game for Harbarger as they went on to beat the Bears 7-0 and move on to play in the AMC Championship tomorrow.  “Notre Dame just beat us,” said Head Coach Ralph Cole.  “We just couldn’t get our offense going in the first game today.”  [Box Score]
 
May 5 vs. Malone (AMC Tournament)
Shawnee State, who was preseason picked to finish 5th in the conference, has proven that they are a team to be reckoned with.  The young Shawnee State squad has grown on and off the field this year and has come together to win Shawnee State's second AMC regular season title and 9th overall conference championship.  However, the Bears want more as they are looking for the school's second softball tournament championship since 1999.  The Bears are one step closer to that title as they defeated Malone 5-1 in the 1st round of the American Mideast Conference Tournament. Malone got on the board first as Kristen Atzenhoefer led off the fourth inning with a homerun.  Shawnee State rallied in the fifth, scoring all the runs they needed to overtake and defeat the Pioneers.  Sophomore Jourdan Priddy led the Bears' charge as she singled to the shortstop.  Malone then walked freshmen Jazel DeAutremont and Jamie Clevenger to load the bases.  The Bears missed an opportunity as freshman Ericka Leighty hit into a fielder's choice and Priddy was out at home.  However, the Bears didn't let the opportunity pass again as freshman Abbey Barrett stepped to the plate and hit a single up the middle, scoring DeAutremont and Clevenger to give the Bears the lead.  The Bears added to the lead as sophomore Brooke Baker followed with a single to centerfield, scoring Leighty and then freshman Sam Attinger brought in two more runs, giving the Bears' the 5-1 advantage, on a double to left center.  "Hopefully they learn from me because I have learned from them," says Head Coach Ralph Cole of his young squad.  Cole who is in his 19th season as head coach and has racked up over 500 victories in his career states, "This has been the hardest, but yet the most enjoyable season I have ever had because of all the success this team has had."   The Bears have only two upperclassmen on the roster and both are excited about how their final seasons have gone.  "I'm glad to finally get to play in the conference tournament since we haven't made it in awhile," says senior pitcher Katie Daniel.  Daniel and fellow senior teammate Ashley Speas, agree that focus and teamwork is what they need heading into day two of the tournament.  "If we keep playing the way we have been, we can definitely win it all," states Daniel.  "We are confident and have the advantage with hosting the tournament."  The Bears also have another reason to take home the tournament championship.  "We want to win for our pitching coach Mike Powell that just passed away," says Daniel.  Daniel, who picked up the win today as she pitched a complete game allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts, has tallied a record of 9-0 on the mound against AMC opponents.   Cole praises Daniel's effort and does not hesitate to say that Mike Powell is the difference with Katie on the mound this year.   [Box Score]
 
April 30 vs. Ursuline

Shawnee State softball team clinched their 2nd American Mideast Title and 9th overall conference title as they split a double-header at Ursuline.  The Bears won the opener as they shutout Ursuline 6-0.  Senior Ashley Speas got the Bears on the board first as she singled to center field, scoring sophomore Brooke Baker in the second inning.  Shawnee State added to their lead in the fourth, as Baker scored on an error and then senior Katie Daniel scored on a wild pitch to extend the Bears lead to 3-0.  Freshman Ericka Leighty scored in the fifth as freshman Sam Attinger grounded out, driving the Leighty into home.  Shawnee State capped off their win as they Attinger hit a single in the top of the seventh, scoring freshman Abby Barrett and Baker and giving the Bears the 6-0 victory.  Katie Daniel got the win as she pitched a complete game allowing five hits and had a career-high 13 strikeouts.  Baker went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.  Speas also went 2-for-4 in the game.  Barrett added a double for Shawnee  State. [Box Score]  The Bears fell in the night cap 4-1.  Ursuline jumped out to an early lead as they scored two runs in the first. The Arrows added to their lead as they scored runs in the third and fifth inning.  The Bears only run of the game came in the sixth inning when Barrett singled through the left side, scoring Leighty.  Ali Thompson was tagged with the loss as she pitched a complete game allowing four runs on nine hits, four walks, while striking out three.  The Bears only had three hits in the game. April 27 vs. Rio Grande

With the score tied at two in the bottom of the tenth, sophomore Brooke Baker stepped to the plate and crushed a game winning homerun over the wall in left-center field to give the Bears the 4-2 over rival Rio Grande.  The Bears had rallied back to tie the game at two in the bottom of the ninth when Baker lead off the inning with a double to center field.  Two batters later, senior Katie Daniel, in her final game as a Bear, doubled down the left field line scoring Baker.  Senior Ashley Speas then doubled to right field and brought Daniel in for the tying run.  Baker went 3-for-5 with a homerun and two doubles. Daniel was tagged with the win as she pitched a complete game allowing two runs (both unearned) on one hits, while striking out nine.  Rio's Anna Smith got the loss as he pitched a ocmplete game allowing four runs on nine hits and five walks.  She also struck out nine batters in the game.  [Box Score]  The Bears took the non-conference sweep as they won the nightcap 1-0.  Shawnee State scored the games only run in the second inning.  Freshman Sam Attinger led off the inning as she reached on an error by Rio Grande's Chelsie Brooks and then stole second to put herself into scoring position.  In her final appearance at home, senior Ashley Speas singled up the middle scoring Attinger, and giving the Bears what would go onto be the 1-0 victory.  Freshman Ali Thompson got the win as she pitched a complete game allowing four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.  Allison Mills was tagged with the loss as she pitched a complete game allowing one run on three hits, one walk, while striking out two.  [Box Score]

 
April 21 vs. Cumberlands
The Shawnee State Softball Team took both games during their double header against the University of the Cumberlands Patriots.  In game one, the Bears got right to work in the first inning.  Freshman Erika Leighty legged out a single to third base and stole second to move into scoring position.  Two batters later, sophomore Brooke Baker drove in Leighty on her RBI double to center field to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.  The Bears would not look back as they added two more runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth to go on to win 5-0.  Baker went 1-for-2 in the game with a double and two RBIs.  Jamie Clevenger also went 1-for-3 with two runs.  Katie Daniel tossed a complete, shut out game allowing only three hits and striking out three batters.  Daniel improves to 10-12 on the season. [Box Score] In game two, the Bears again got to business early in the first inning.  Clevenger singled up the middle and also stole second base to move into scoring position with Leighty coming to the plate.  Leighty smashed a double to left field and Clevenger scored to put the Bears on the board.  Two batters later, Baker popped up to deep second base which gave Leighty the chance to use her speed and cross the plate for the second run of the inning.  The Bears put another run on the board in the third when catcher Abbey Barrett hit an RBI single back to the pitcher giving the Bears a 3-0 lead. The Patriots had their chance in the seventh inning as they had two runners on base and scored on a fielder’s choice by pinch hitter Breitholle to make it 3-1.  But freshman pitcher Ali Thompson put an end to the Patriots rally by striking out Breen for the final out and giving the Bears the win. Leighty went 2-for-3 with  a double, a run and a RBI.  Barrett went 2-for-2 with a RBI and a stolen base.  Daniel also went 2-for-3 with a double.  Thompson tossed a complete game allowing only one run on six hits and striking out five batters.  She improves to 12-9 on the season. April 18 vs. Walsh

Shawnee State split a double-header with Walsh University.  The Bears won the opener 3-1.  Walsh got on the board first as they scored a run in the third inning.  The Bears answered back taking the lead in the fifth as they scored one run.  With two outs, freshman Jazel DeAutremont doubled to center field.  Freshman Jamie Clevenger then walked and both runners advanced bases on a wild pitch.  Freshman Ericka Leighty then hit a single to left field, scoring both runs and giving the Bears the 2-1 lead.  The Bears secured the win as they scored a run in the sixth inning.  Sophomore Brooke Baker led the inning off with a single to right center.  She then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Sam Attinger.  Baker then scored on an error by Walsh’s Ashley Hoover to seal the victory.  Katie Daniel got the win for the Bears, improving her record on the mound to 9-12.  She pitched a complete game allowing one run (unearned) on three hits, while striking out seven.  Daniel did not walk a batter in the game.  Kelsey Ford was tagged with the loss for the Cavaliers.  She pitched a complete game allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, and two walks.  She struck out one batter in the game.  DeAutremont went 2-for-2 at the plate, with a run scored, while Leighty went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s.  [Box Score]  With the scored knotted at one, Walsh’s Dana Brown hit a double to left field, scoring Jenna Russo to the give the Cavaliers the 2-1 win in the game 2.  In the top of the second inning, Walsh’s Ashley Hoover doubled to left center, scoring Megan Cain and giving Walsh the 1-0 lead.  Baker led off the second inning for the Bears with a single to center field.  Attinger followed with a single through the left side advancing Baker to second.  Daniel hit a sacrifice bunt, advancing the runner and senior Ashley Speas hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Baker and tie the game at one apiece.  Shawnee State only had four hits in the game.  Freshman Ali Thompson was tagged with the loss as she allowed two runs on seven hits, two walks, while striking out three in the contest.  Thompson falls to 11-9 on the mound.  Erin Ebert got the win for the Cavaliers as she pitched a complete game allowing one run on four hits, one walk, and one strike out. [Box Score]

 
April 17 vs. Malone
In a battle of the American Mideast Conference leaders, the Shawnee State Bears come out victorious as they swept a double-header from Malone University to stay on top of the AMC standings. Senior Katie Daniel had a stellar performance on the mound as she gave up only two hits in the game while striking out a career-high 12 batters en route to the Bears 2-1 victory.  Shawnee State took an early lead as they scored runs in the first and second inning to lead 2-1.  In the bottom of the first sophomore Abbey Barrett hit a double to left field and then scored on a single by sophomore Brooke Baker to jump out to an 1-0 lead after one.   Senior Ashley Speas got the Bears started in the second inning with a single through the middle.  Speas then advanced to second on a single to right field by sophomore Jourdan Priddy.  Freshman Jamie Clevenger then hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Speas and giving Shawnee State the 2-0 lead through two innings.  Malone cut the Bears lead as Kristien Atzenhoefter hit a triple to center field, scoring Morgan Heacock.  Daniel picked up the win as she pitched a complete game allowing one run (unearned) on two hits, and did not allow a walk in the game to go with her 12 strikeouts.  Jessica Krska was tagged with the loss for the Pioneers as she allowed two runs on nine hits, two walks, while striking out four batters.  Baker went 2-for-3 in the game with one RBI, while Speas also went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored. [Box Score]  After begin down 5-0, the Bears brought out an offensive assault in the fifth as they scored 11 runs on 10 hits to take the lead which would be the final score.  Freshmen Sam Attinger and Jazel DeAutremont as well as Speas and Priddy each had two hits in the inning.  Ali Thompson got the win as she allowed five runs on five hits, one walk, while striking out four.  For Malone Kelsey Hatfield was tagged with the loss as she pitched the first three innings, allowing six runs on six hits, two walk.  She had four strikeouts in the game.  Krska pitched the remainder of the game for the Pioneers.  She allowed five runs on five hits, two walks, while striking out one batter. Attinger finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate, with two runs and two RBI’s.  DeAutremont went 3-for-4 at the plate, with one run scored and two RBI’s, while Priddy went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI’s.  Each of them hit a double in the game.  [Box Score]
 
April 15 vs. Urbana
Shawnee State struggled as they lost a double-header to Urbana University. Shawnee State lost the opener in extra innings by a score of 1-0.  In the top of the seventh inning  Chelsea Riley drove in the game’s only run on her RBI ground out to short giving the Blue Knights the lead and the win.  Neither team did well at the plate as both team only had four hits in the contest.  Senior Katie Daniel went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bears.  On the mound Daniel was tagged with the loss as she allowed one run on four hits and struck out seven batters.  [Box Score]  In the night cap the Bears fell 4-3 in extra innings.  Shawnee State lead 2-0 after three, but Urbana scored runs in the fourth and fifth to send the game in to extra innings.  The Blue Knights then scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead.  Sophomore Brooke Baker lead off the bottom of the eighth with a homerun, but the Bears fell short as they could not put a runner on base.  Baker went 2-for-4 in the game with two runs scored and one run batted in.  Freshman Ericka Leighty also went 2-for-4 in the game with a triple and a run scored.   Freshman Abbey Barrett added a double for the Bears. Freshman Ali Thompson got the loss for the Bears as she pitched a complete game allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks.  Thompson retired three batters in the game.  [Box Score]
 
April 13 vs. Ohio Dominican
Shawnee State lost a double-header to Ohio Dominican in non-conference action.  In the opener, Shawnee State committed five errors in the third inning, allowing Ohio Dominican to score six runs and take the 6-0 advantage after three.  The Bears scored three runs in the fourth inning, but fell short as they lost to Ohio Dominican 6-3.  Freshman Sam Attinger was 2-for-3 at the plate, with a double and a run scored.  Senior Ashley Speas and sophomore Jourdan Priddy each tallied a run in the game.  Daniel was tagged with the loss as she pitched a complete game allowing six runs, all unearned, on five hits and two walks.  She struck out eight batters in the game.  Erica Sutter got the win for the Panthers as she pitched a complete game allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks.  [Box Score]  The Bears, which only had five hits in the game, couldn't get rolling in game 2 as they fell 5-1.  Ohio Dominican got on the board first as they scored one run in the fourth.  The Panthers scored four more runs in the fifth to stretch their lead to 5-0.  The Bears, which only had five runs in the game, scored in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from freshman Ericka Leighty, scoring Daniel and giving Shawnee State its only run of the game.  Freshman Ali Thompson was tagged with the loss as she pitched a complete game allowing five runs on eight hits, three walks, while striking out four batters.  ODU's Maria Staton got the win as she pitched a complete game allowing one run on five hits, one walk, and had three strike outs. April 11 @ Rio Grande

The Bears dropped two during their doubleheader against the RedStorm of Rio Grande.  The Bears tried to rally back late in the game.  Going into the seventh inning down 4-1, with runners on second and third, Attinger provided an RBI groundout to the pitcher.  The next batter, Brooke Baker hit a RBI double bringing the Bears within one.  The late inning magic ran out as the RedStorm got out of the jam and went on to win the opener with a score of 4-3.  Baker went 2-for-3 in the game with a double, a run, and an RBI.  Freshman Erika Leighty went 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.  Katie Daniel also went 2-for-3 with a double.  [Box Score]  Behind 6-1 going into the seventh inning, the Bears again tried to rally back in the nightcap.  With two outs and on runner on base Leighty doubled to left center.  Barrett hit an RBI single to center.  Sam Attiger then walked to load the bases.  Brooke Baker then reached on an error by the centerfielder which allowed Leighty, Barrett, and Attinger to cross the plate and bring it within one run.  But again, the luck ran out as the Bears came up short with the final score of 6-5.  Barrett went 3-for-3 in the game with a double, two runs scored, and one run batted in.  Leighty also went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. April 10 @ Mount Vernon
Shawnee State swept a conference double-header against Mount Vernon.  The Bears brought out the power in the opener when sophomore Brooke Baker sent a solo shot to center field in the second inning.  Both freshman Sam Attinger and Baker blasted back-to-back homeruns in the fourth inning to go up 4-1 against the Cougars.  The very next inning, freshman Abbey Barrett smashed a homerun over the fence in center field.  The Bears went on to win the opener 6-1.  Baker went 3-for-4 with two homeruns, three runs scored, and two RBIs in the game.  Barrett went 2-for-4 with a homerun, one RBI, and one run scored.  Attinger also went 1-for-2 with a homerun.  Senior Katie Daniel pitched 7.0 innings allowing one run on five hits and struck out eight batters.  Daniel improves to 6-9 on the year. [Box Score]  With the Bears already up 4-0 in the sixth inning of the nightcap, freshmen Jazel DeAutremont and  Jamie Clevenger  both singled and advanced to second and third on a passed ball.  Two batters later, Abbey Barrett brought both runners in on a triple to right-center field.  Sam Attinger then drove Barrett in on a single to center field to give the Bears a 7-0 lead.  The Bears went on to win the nightcap 8-0.  Barrett went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and one run in the game.   Attinger also went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and a run.  Freshman Ali Thompson threw a complete shut out game allowing six hits and striking out four batters.  Thompson improves to 9-5 on the season.  [Box Score]
 
April 7 vs. Pikeville
Shawnee State swept a double-header at home against Pikeville College.  Shawnee State won the opener 4-0.  Shawnee State got on the board early as sophomore Brooke Baker singled to center field, scoring two runners, and giving the Bears the 2-0 advantage after the 1st inning.  Baker led off the 3rd inning with a single.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice from senior Ashley Speas.  Sophomore Jourdan Priddy singled, advancing Baker to 3rd where she scored on a error.  Priddy then scored on a single by freshman Jazel DeAutremont, giving Shawnee State the 4-0 lead and the win.   Katie Daniel got the win as she pitched the complete game shutout allowing five hits and one walk, while striking out six batters.  Baker went 2-for-3 in the game, with two RBI's and a run scored.  DeAutremont also tallied two hits for the Bears, while freshman Sam Attinger hit a double in the game.  [Box Score]  The Bears won the night cap 3-1.  The Bears jumped out to an early lead as freshman Ericka Leighty got the Bears going in the 1st as she singled to center field and stole two bases.  Freshman Abbey Barrett, Attinger and Baker each reached on walks, scoring Leighty.  Speas hit a single to right field, scoring Barrett.  Freshman Ali Thompson drove in a run as she grounded out to second, giving the Bears the 3-0 advantage after one.  Pikeville scored one run in the 2nd but the Bears wouldn't allow another run in the game, picking up the non-conference sweep.  Thompson picked up the win as she pitched a complete game allowing one run (unearned) on seven hits and one walk.  Shawnee State only had four hits in the game.  Leighty was 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored.  Thompson added a double for the Bears. April 3 vs. Notre Dame
Shawnee State swept a double-header at home against Notre Dame College.  Shawnee State's senior Katie Daniel scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 7th inning to give the Bears the 8-7 win.  The Bears scored two runs in the 3rd inning to get on the board first.  Both teams scored two runs in the 4th inning and the Bears tallied another run in the 5th to take a 5-2 lead.  Notre Dame scored four runs in the top of the 6th to take the 6-5 advantage.  The Bears answered back in the bottom of the 6th with two runs regaining the lead.  The Falcons tied the game in the 7th, but Daniel's score on the wild pitch gave the Bear their fifth conference win of the season.  Daniel was credited with the win as she pitched a complete game allowing seven runs on 12 hits, two walks, while striking out three batters.  Brooke Baker was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and one RBI in the game.  Freshmen Ericka Leighty and Sam Attinger each went 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI's.  Freshman Jamie Clevenger had a triple in the game and scored two runs for the Bears. [Box Score]  In game 2 of the double-header tt took extra innings for the Bears to pull of the 4-3 victory.  Sophomore Brooke Baker lead the Bears off in the 10th inning with a walk.  Senior Ashley Speas sacrificed to advance Baker to 2nd base, then freshman Ali Thompson flied out to right field, advancing Baker to 3rd.  Sophomore Jourdan Priddy hit an RBI single through the right side, scoring Baker and giving the Bears the sweep over Notre Dame. Thompson was tagged with the win as pitched the complete game allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks.  She had one strike out in the game.  Clevenger went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Bears, while Baker went 2-for-4.  Freshman Abbey Barrett and Attinger each had a double in the game for the Bears. March 30 @ Cedarville
Shawnee State split a double-header at Cedarville.  Shawnee State won the opener 3-0.  The Bears scored two runs in the 4th inning to get on the board first.  Freshman Abbey Barrett singled through the middle to start in inning and then freshman Sam Attinger hit a homerun to put the Bears up 2-0.  Senior Ashley Speas singled to right center in the 6th inning, scoring sophomore Brooke Long to tally what would be the final score of 3-0. Senior Katie Daniel was tagged with the win as she pitched the complete game allowing no runs on 4 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 4 batters in the game.  Barrett and sophomore Brooke Baker each had 2 hits for the Bears.  [Box Score]  Shawnee State lost the night cap 11-9.  The Bears gave up 9 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings to put themselves in a deficit.  Cedarville scored 2 more runs in the 6th to cap off the 11-9 win.  The Bears tried to rally as they scored 7 runs in the final three innings, but it wasn't enough.  Freshman Ali Thompson got the loss for the Bears as she allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks in 3 1/3 innings.  Barrett was 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 runs and 2 runs batted in.  Freshman Ericka Leighty was 2-for-4 in the game with 1 run and 1 RBI.  Freshmen Jazel DeAutremont and Jamie Clevenger each scored 2 runs for the Bears.  [Box Score]
 
March 28 @ Point Park
The Shawnee State Softball Team gave Coach Ralph Cole his 500th career victory at the NAIA level as the Bears defeeated Point Park 5-1. Ralph Cole began his head coaching career at Shawnee State in 1992, after spending two years as an assistant to Robin Hagen-Smith.  Cole has coached the Bears to a 500-242 record over his 19 seasons.  Cole has coached the Bears to nine conference championship and nine NAIA National Tournament Appearances, including NAIA National Runner-up in 1997.  He was named conference Coach of the Year in 1996.   "This would not have been possible without the many special players I've had the privilege of coaching, including my daughter Amy and granddaughter Tammie Jo," says Cole of his 500th victory.  "I would like to acknowledge all the help that I've had over the years that has allowed me to continue coaching while balancing both of my careers."   "This is a great accomplishment for Coach Cole and our softball program," say Athletic Director Jeff Hamilton.  "He has been a pillar of Shawnee State softball for 19 years.  He has taken his team numerous times to the post season and to the brink of a National Championship in 1997.  This is another great milestone for the Hall of Fame Coach."  Daniel continued her stellar weekend as she pitched a complete game allowing 1 run on 3 hits, with walk, while striking out another 9 batters.  Baker was 2-for-3 in the game, including a two-run homerun in the 1st inning to set the tone for the Bears.  Leighty added a double and scored 2 runs for the Bears, while freshman Jazel DeAutremont added 2 runs in the game.  [Box Score
 
March 27 @ Carlow

Shawnee State swept a double-header at Carlow to open up conference play and give Coach Cole his 499th victory on Saturday afternoon.  The Bears won the opener 5-2.  Senior Katie Daniel got the win for the Bears as she pitched a complete game, giving up 2 runs (both unearned) on 7 hits and 1 walk.  She also struck out a career-high 9 batters.  Sophomore Brooke Baker was 3-for-4 in the game, with a run scored, while freshman Sam Attinger went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.  [Box Score]  The Bears won the night-cap 4-3.  Freshman Ali Thompson was tagged with the win as she pitched a complete game allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits, with one walk, while striking out 2 batters.  Freshman Ericka Leighty was 3-for-4 at the plate, with 2 runs scored and a RBI.  Freshman Abbey Barrett had 2 hits in the game, with 2 RBI's and a run scored.  [Box Score]

 
March 24 vs. St. Catharine
Shawnee State swept St. Catharine in a double-header by scores of 4-1 and 5-2.  Sophomore Brooke Baker hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the 6th inning to give the Bears the 4-1 lead, which would win Game 1.   St. Catharine tallied the first run of the game as they scored one run in the 2nd inning.  Sophomore Brooke Baker batted freshman Abbey Barrett for the Bears in the 6th to knot the game at one apiece.  Senior Katie Daniel pitched a complete game for the the win.  In the win she allowed 1 run (unearned) on 1 hit and 2 walks in the game, while retiring 7 batters in the game.  Chelcie Rein was tagged with the loss for the Patriots as she allowed 3 runs on 2 hits in 1/3 innings.  Senior Ashley Speas went 2-for-3 in the game, and Baker had 4 RBI's and scored 1 run for the Bears.  [Box Score] In game 2, St. Catharine scored a run in the 2nd and 3rd innings, giving the Patriots the 2-0 advantage.  The Bears answered back in the 2nd inning.  Freshman Jamie Clevenger led off with a single to left field and then stole second.  Freshman Abbey Barrett hit a single to deep left field, scoring Clevenger and advanced to second to put herself in scoring position.  Barrett then scored on an error by St. Catharine catcher to knot the game at 2.  Freshman Ericka Leighty lead off the 6th inning with a triple to left field and then scored on a single to left by Barrett.  Barrett then stole second base.  Baker hit a single to left field, advancing Barret to third, where she would score on a ground out by senior Ashley Speas to give the Bears the 4-2 lead.  The Bears sealed the victory as they tallied another run in the 6th inning on a single through the middle by freshman Sam Attinger, scoring Leighty.  Freshman Ali Thompson got the win as she pitched a complete game allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 2 batters.  Justine Poddock was tagged with the loss as she allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 6 in the contest.  Barrett had a stellar game as the plate, as she went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored. March 20 vs. Madonna
Shawnee State lost a double-header to preseason ranked No. 14 Madonna University.  Shawnee State gave up seven runs in the 6th and three more in the 7th to fall 11-1 in the opener.  Senior Katie Daniel was tagged with the loss as she pitched a complete game allowing 11 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits and 1 walk.  She struck out 7 batters in the game.  Freshman Jamie Clevenger went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bears and freshman Ericka Leightly scored SSU's only run of the game.  [Box Score]  The Bears lost game 2 9-1 as they gave up all nine runs in the final four innings.  Freshman Ali Thompson got the loss as she allowed 9 runs (6 earned) on 11 hits. She struck out 2 batter and gave up 1 walk in the game.  Sophomore Brooke Baker scored the Bears' only run of the game and went 2-for-3 in the game.  Thompson tallied the RBI for the Bears. March 19 vs. Madonna
Shawnee State split a double-header with preseason No. 14 ranked Madonna University.  The Bears lost the opener as Madonna scored one run in the 4th innings and twice more in the 7th to cap of the 3-0 win.  Senior Katie Daniel was tagged with the loss as she pitched a complete game and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, with 2 walks, and retired 4 batters.  Jess Irwin got the win for the Crusaders as she pitched 5 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 walks.  She also struck out 5 batters in the game.  Hallie Minch got the save for Madonna.  Freshman Jazel DeAutremont went 2-for-3 in the game for the Bears.  [Box Score]  It took an extra inning for the Bears to pull of the 3-2 victory.  Madonna scored one run in the 8th inning to take the 2-1 lead, but the Bears answered as they brought in two runs to win the game.  With a runner on 2nd base, the winning runner, freshman Ericka Leighty, reached on an error.  Freshman Barrett then doubled down the left field line, scoring both runners and giving the Bears the victory.  Freshman Ali Thompson got the win for the Bears.  She pitched a complete game giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, 1 walk, while striking out 3. Leighty went 2-for-3 in the game with 1 run scored and 1 RBI.  DeAutremont scored 2 runs in the game for the Bears. [Box Score]
 
March 17 vs. Georgetown

Shawnee State lost a double-header to Georgetown College by scores of 2-0 and 3-2.  After giving up 2 runs in the 6th, the Bears' tried to rally in the 7th inning as the Bears had two runners on bases with no outs, but were unsuccessful as they fell 2-0 to Georgetown College in game one of the double-header.  Senior Katie Daniel was charged with the loss for the Bears as she pitched a complete games allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 2.  Brittany Gunther got the win for the Tigers as she pitched the entire game allowing 4 hits, 2 walks, while retiring 4 batters.  Freshmen Jazel DeAutremont, Abbey Barrett, Sam Attinger, and sophomore Jourdan Priddy each had a hit for the Bears. [Box Score] The Bears scored a run in the 4th and 5th innings to take a 2-0 lead, but gave up 3 runs in the 6th as Georgetown took game 2 of the double-header 3-2.  Sophomore Brooke Baker got the Bears' going as she lead of the 4th inning with a single to left field.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Ashley Speas.  The runner then advanced to third as Jazel DeAutremont was hit by a pitch.  Jourdan Priddy then walked with bases loaded to bring in the first run of the game.  Shawnee State's freshman Ericka Leighty began the 5th inning of with a single through the left side.  Sam Attinger then hit a single through the middle to put Leighty in scoring position.  Brooke Baker then reached and advanced Leighty to third on a fielder's choice.  Ashley Speas then hit a ground ball to first base, scoring Leighty and giving the Bears the  2-0 advantage after 5 innings. Georgetown answered in the 6th inning.  Georgetown's Jordan Clemons started the Tiger's rally with a double to left center and then advanced to third on a single to right field by Laura Hoffman.  Clemons then scored on a single to left field by Hillary Plain.  With two outs, Pamela Hardesty doubled to left center, scoring Plain, and then scored herself on a single by Ashley Mitchell to give the Tigers the 3-2 lead.  In the 7th, the Bears had an opportunity to knot the game up at 3, but fell short.  Leighty singled through the left side to lead off the Bears and then advanced to second on a passed ball.   Sam Attinger grounded out to the 2nd baseman, advancing Leighty to third.  Brooke Baker then reached on an error by Georgetown's shortstop and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Ashley Speas then reached on a fielder's choice, but the game would come to an end as Leighty would be tagged out at home.  Shawnee State's Ali Thompson was tagged with the loss as she gave up 3 runs on 12 hits, while retiring 2 batters.  Leighty went 3-for-4 in the game for the Bears.  [Box Score]
