After a very disappoint 2-16
record from last year, the Shawnee State men's soccer team has
brought in a very talented group of newcomers. The new class
includes the addition of 11 freshman and two transfers. Also
returning to the team is Wes Lyon and Paul Adkins, who set out much
of last season due to injuries, as well as seniors Matt Lonsinger
and Curtis Jones, who are returning to the field after taking a year
off. The squad returns 13 players from last season's squad.
Leading the Bears this season
will be senior captain Drew Sampson and Jordan Buck. Sampson
and Buck are both four-year starters and will be in key the Bears'
success this season. Rounding out the senior class is Matt
Lonsinger, Curtis Jones, Chris George, Michael Cornell, and Bryan
Barker.
Steven Cox is the lone junior
returning to the Bears' team. Cox is a two-time All-American
Mideast Conference honoree and led the AMC in goals his freshman
season.
Returning sophomore include
Lenier Crawford, Wes Lyon, Paul Adkins, Cody Bond, Dale Vinson,
Keenan Havens, Josh Hartman, Kevin Fischer, and Chris Justice.
Crawford started every game that he played in last season and Adkins
and Lyon were both starters before being sidelined with injuries.
Hartman, Vinson, and Bond each saw several minutes of playing time
and will be key for the Bears' this season. Fischer played in
13 games last season in goal.
The incoming freshman class is
very talented group. Led by Chad Johnston, Ryan Beatty,
Michael Meadows, Caleb Klay, and Ryan Hooper. Rounding out the
freshman class is Logan Coyer, Lance Dunbarger, Michael Salsbury,
Brandon Price, Sam Torres, Josh Bailey, and Donovan Dean-Moederzoon.
Rounding out the 2009 men's
soccer roster is sophomore transfers Luke Purpero and David Crossan.
Purpero will add strength to the offense and will be a force in the
American Mideast Conference. Crossan will play back-up goal
for the Bears.
"We have a great mix of
returning players and new players, with a lot of senior leadership,"
said SSU Head Coach Ron Goodson. "I expect to improve from
last years record and be more competitive in the AMC. We have
a competitive schedule and we are looking forward to making a
statement in our final season in the AMC.
Shawnee State opens the season

5th and 6th.
