After finishing 7-9-2 last season the Shawnee State University Men’s
Soccer team recorded the most successful record in the history of
the program. However, losing five starting seniors to graduation and
only returning four of last year’s starters will make it a challenge
to improve that record.
For the Bears, facing this challenge will not be a problem as they
return 17 from last year’s squad and welcome 18 freshmen to the
team. Of those returning to the team include seniors Ross Frantz
(Portsmouth, OH) and four-year starter Ryan Appell (Blacklick, OH).
Juniors Jordan Buck (Chillicothe, OH) and Drew Sampson
(Wheelersburg, OH) will be the captains in the upcoming season and
hope to lead their team to a successful season. Also playing key
roles for the Bears will be junior goal keeper Rocky Dunkin
(Wheelersburg, OH) and sophomore forward Steven Cox (Upper
Arlington, OH) who earned 2nd team All-AMC honors and
also set a Shawnee State single season record with 18 goals.
The large freshman class also looks to contribute to the Bear’s
success as some will even be included in the starting lineup.
Amongst the talented freshman class are defensive player Lenier
Crawford (Columbus, OH), two-time All-Ohio midfielder Wes Lyon
(Wheelersburg, OH), and All-Ohio midfielder Jeff Strausbaugh
(Chillicothe, OH).
Shawnee State opens the 2008 season at home on Wednesday, Septemeber
3 versus West Virginia Tech. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at Shawnee State
Field. |
