The Shawnee State Golf Team returns five players from last
season’s squad who won two tournaments. Gone from the team is
Jason VanDeusen, who was the winner of the OSU-Lima
Invitational.
The Bears will be lead by sophomore Koby Vogler (Manchester,
OH). He led the team last season, averaging 78.5 strokes per
round. Koby earned medalist honors last spring at the OU-Chillicothe
Invitational and also in the fall at the Urbana Invitational.
Also returning this season are seniors Nathan Burgess and Jeff
Evans return for the Bears. Burgess (Pickerington, OH) played
in 12 rounds last season and averaged 79.2 strokes per round.
Evans (Jackson, OH) averaged 80.3 strokes per game during the
2005 – 2006 season. Junior Drew Prater (Chillicothe, OH) is
also returning this season. He averaged 78.7 strokes per round
last season. Prater earned medalist honors this fall, when he
shot 73-77 at the Wittenberg Invitational. Rounding out the
returning letterman is sophomore David Mays. He averaged 80.1
strokes per round in 15 rounds of play.
The newcomers to the squad include four freshmen. Nicholas
Chabot (Portsmouth, OH) played in two tournaments in the fall
and averaged 81.7 strokes per round. R.D. Erwin (Grove City,
OH) averaged 81.8 strokes per round in the fall through 5 rounds
of play. Jake Kelly (Westlake, OH) played in two tournaments in
the fall and averaged 82.9 strokes per round. Jay Rudmann
(Ironton, OH) participated in one tournament and averaged 84
strokes per round.
“To challenge for the conference championship we need
continued improvement from the #3 through #5 players,” said
Coach Merb. “Koby Vogler and Drew Prater give us a solid
one-two punch at the top. David Mays is consistent at the #3
slot but needs to knock a few shots off his stroke average. All
of the rest of the team has a chance of playing in the top five
this spring.”
Shawnee State
opens play at their own tournament. The Shawnee State
Invitational is schedules for March 23 and 24 at the Elk’s
Country Club. Shawnee State was runner-up last year, behind of
Ohio Dominican. |
