The 2006 Shawnee State University Golf roster is one of the
youngest in Coach Roger Merb's 18 year tenure. The Bears
have just one senior on the squad, and return just three members
from last year's team.
Fifth year senior Jason VanDeusen (Portsmouth, OH) leads the
Bears in tournaments played. He has recorded an 80.7
stroke average in 43 tournaments over the course of his career.
He averaged 79.9 strokes per round during the 2004-2005 season.
Junior Jeff Evans (Jackson, OH) played in just 5 tournaments as
a freshman and 12 as a sophomore. He has a career-average
of 84.9 strokes per round. Sophomore Drew Prater
(Chillicothe, OH) averaged 79.1 strokes in 9 rounds as a
freshman. He showed marked improvement in the fall as he
averaged a 75.8 through 3 tournaments in the fall.
The newcomers to the squad include a junior college transfer
and 3 freshmen. Junior Nate Burgess (Pickerington, OH)
played a total of three rounds in the fall and averaged 78.3
strokes per round. Drew Keller (Lucasville, OH) played in
just one tournament in the fall and struggled to an 86.5 stroke
per round average. David Mays (Ashland, KY) had a
consistent fall and averaged 78.5 strokes through 5 rounds of
play. Koby Vogler (Manchester, OH) had the second best
scoring average on the team during the fall season.
Through 5 rounds he averaged a 76.2. His best performance
of the fall came at the Glenville State Invitational where he
shot 72-75 and finished 17th overall.
"We're pretty young overall" said Coach Merb. "I do
think we have some talented young players on the team, and if
they adjust to the college game and put in the necessary work, I
think we could see a great deal of improvement over the course
of the season."
Shawnee State opens play at their own tournament. The
Shawnee State Invitational is scheduled for March 26 and 27 at
the Elk's Country Club. Shawnee State won the event last
year. |
