The
2005 Golf season will be somewhat of a rebuilding process for
Shawnee
State
University
. SSU returns just 4
players, 2 seniors and 2 sophomores, from a team that won 1
tournament and finished second at the AMC Championship Meet in
2004. Gone is Heath
Chamberlain, winner of the 2004 Cedarville Invitational, and Matt
DeHart, winner of the 2004 American Mideast Conference Tournament.
The
most experienced returning player for
Shawnee
State
in 2005 is senior Jason VanDeusen.
He has played in 31 rounds over the course of his career
and averaged 81 strokes per round.
Senior Brad Washburn is the only other upper classman on
the roster. Since
transferring from
Marshall
University
as a sophomore, Washburn has played in 23 rounds, averaging 79.4
strokes per round.
Sophomores
Shawn Sergent and Jeff Evans also return to the squad from last
season. Sergent
averaged 78.5 strokes per round through 18 rounds as a freshman.
He placed 2nd overall at the Shawnee State
Invitational and Cedarville Invitational.
He placed 7th at the AMC Championship Tournament
and earned All-AMC honors. Evans
played in just 5 rounds as a freshman and carded an average score
of 87.6. He showed a
great deal of improvement during the fall season and looks to make
the traveling squad.
Four
freshmen look to compete for the 5th on final spot on
the team’s Top 5. Brian
Hunter (Northwest H.S.), Drew Prater (Southeaster H.S.), Tom
Kempinski (North Olmstead H.S.), and Andy Wilkinson (Loveland H.S.)
make up the 2004 – 2005 freshman class.
Shawnee
State
opens the season hosting the
Shawnee State Invitational on March 28 & 29.
The Bears are also scheduled to compete in the OU-Chillicothe
Invitational, the Urbana University Invitational, the
Mt.
Vernon Invitational, the Cedarville Invitational, the Wilmington
College Invitational, the Ohio Dominican Invitational, and the
American Mideast Conference/NAIA Region IX Championship
Tournament.
