After winning the Urbana
Invitational during the fall season, Coach Rick Merb expects a
strong showing from his golf team throughout the challenging spring
season. “I’m
looking for them to make a run at the AMC tournament
championship,” stated Coach Merb.
The spring squad consists of
four returnees and three freshmen.
Returning senior Matt DeHart is a two-year letterman with a
career average of 77.3. He
was a medallist at the Urbana Invitational, and was All Conference
in 2003. “Matt should
be one of the top players in the league,” said Coach Merb.
Also returning is senior Heath Chamberlin.
Heath is a three-year letter winner with a career average of
79.1. Coach Merb has
tagged him “our most consistent player.”
The remaining two returners
are juniors Jason Van Deusen and Brad Washburn.
Washburn averaged 78.5 in the fall, while VanDeusen posted a
79.5. Consistency and
steady improvement will be the keys for the pair in the spring
season.
Leading the freshmen is
Shawn Sargent, who led the team in the fall season with a 74.6
average. “Shawn
should provide solid scoring this spring,” stated Coach Merb.
Paul Miller had a solid start in the fall as well, with an
average of 76.5. “Paul
should be a consistent low scorer this spring,” said Coach Merb.
Rounding out the newcomers is
Jeff Evans.
“Evans improved steadily in the fall season and had a
strong start as a first year player,” stated Coach Merb.
Shawnee opens tournament
play at the Glenville Tournament March 18-19.
