Shawnee
State placed fifth at the NAIA Region IX Tournament
held at Apple Valley Country Club last week.
Shawnee State shot a 956 in the 54-hole event to
finish 39 stokes behind Walsh University. Malone
College and Mt. Vernon tied at 926 and Urbana finished
fourth at 932. Brandon Caniff led the Bears with
a 229 (76+76+77) and fifth place overall finish.
Matt DeHart finished 17th at 237. Mike Spriggs
and Heath Chamberlain tied for 26th place at 247.
Eric Welch rounded out the scoring with a 250.

22-23 @ Cedarville Invitational |

BEARS
FINISH SECOND AT CEDARVILLE; CANIFF MEDALS
Shawnee
State finished second out of five teams at the
Cedarville University Golf Invitational. The
event was played at Beavercreek Golf Club on Monday
and at The Country Club of the North on Tuesday.
Shawnee State tied Urbana University with
a two-day total of 606. However, Urbana won the
tiebreaker due to a better final day score by their
fifth player. SSU's Mike Spriggs shot a 79 on
day two, while Urbana's Jordan Castle carded a 78.
Shawnee's
Brandon Caniff won his second consecutive tournament
and the seventh of his career. Caniff tied with
Mt. Vernon's Chad Gress with a two-day score of 148.
Caniff won the event when he birdied the first hole of
a sudden death playoff. Caniff shot 76 on day
one, followed by an even-par round of 72. Matt
DeHart carded a 149 (76-73) and Heath Chamberlain shot
151 (75-76). Spriggs had his best outing of the
season with a score or 159 (80-79). Eric Welch
rounded out the Bears' scoring with a 161 (83-78). |

19-20 @ Mt. Vernon Nazarene Invitational |

Shawnee
State finished fifth out of nine teams at the Mt.
Vernon Nazarene Invitational held at Apple Valley Golf
Course on Friday and Saturday.
The Bears shot a team-total 616 to finish
sixteen strokes behind Malone College (600).
Urbana University finished second with a score
of 601. Brandon Caniff won the individual
championship with a two-day total 144(70-74).
He defeated Malone’s Keith Cunningham with
birdie on the second playoff hole.
The championship is the sixth of Caniff’s
career at Shawnee State. Matt DeHart carded a
155(79-76).
Heath Chamberlain shot a 156 (81-75).
Mike Spriggs and Justin Perry each tallied a
166.
Spriggs shot 87-79 and Perry shot 82-84.
Eric Welch shot a two-day total 151 (81-70), but was
entered as an individual.

12-13 @ Urbana Blue Knight Invitational |
| Shawnee
State finished third out of nine teams at the Urbana
Blue Knight Golf Invitational at the Woodland Golf
Club over the weekend. Matt DeHart was the
tournament medalist as he shot a two-day total 143.
He opened on Friday with tournament-low round of 69.
He followed with a 74 on Saturday. Brandon
Caniff tied for second place, carding a 147.
Heath Chamberlain (155) and Eric Welch (164) rounded
out the scoring for SSU. Urbana won the event
with a team-total 597. Mt. Vernon shot 607, and
Shawnee State finished at 609. |

@ Central State Invitational |
| Shawnee
State captured their first tournament of the spring as
they won the Central State Invitational. Brandon
Caniff and Heath Chamberlain each shot 75's and tied
for second place. Eric Welch shot a season-best
76 playing in the fifth spot. Matt DeHart
rounded out the scoring with a 77. The Bears
finished with a team total 303; seven strokes ahead of
runner up, Cedarville University. |

4-5 @ Southeastern KY Intercollegiate |
| Shawnee
State finished eleventh out of twenty teams at the
Southeastern Kentucky Intercollegiate Tournament at
Crooked Creek Golf Course. The Bears shot a team
total 623 (311 + 312) at the two-day event.
Brandon Caniff finished 18th overall as he carded a
151 (75 + 76). Matt DeHart shot 152 (74 + 78).
Heath Chamberlain shot 157 (81 + 76). Eric Welch
rounded out the scoring with a 163 (81 + 82).
Johnson & Wales University (FL) blew away the
field with a two-day total of 581. North
Greenville finished second with a score of 597. |

| The Bears
took second place in the 2002 Shawnee State
Invitational. SSU (299) finished five strokes
behind Mt. Vernon Nazarene (294) and eleven strokes
ahead of Urbana University (310). Brandon Caniff
led the Bears with a round of 73. Matt DeHart
and Heath Chamberlain each shot 74. Justin Perry
rounded out the scoring for the Bears with a 78.
Unfortunately for Shawnee State, Eric Welch (76), Josh
Skeans (77) and Jason VanDeusen (77) played as
individuals and were not eligible for team scoring. |
