BEARS INK UNIOTO'S HOLBERT

Unioto High School's Sammy Holbert has signed a letter of intent to continue his running career at Shawnee State under Head Coach Eric Putnam.

Holbert is a four-year letterman in both cross country and track for Tanks. He ran in the Division II State Cross Country meet all four years of high school, placing 114th in 2007, 115th in 2008, 111th in 2009 and 45th in 2010 in a time of 16:50. Holbert's career best for the Tanks is 16:43. 

"We are excited to have Sammy on our roster," states Coach Putnam. "Sammy has been a big part of the very successful Unioto distance program and knows what hard work is all about. I look for him to have solid career here at Shawnee State."

Sammy's older brother, Zach, ran for the Bears and is the 16th fastest runner in program history.

Shawnee State competes in the Mid-South Conference. In their inaugural season (2010) in the Mid-South, the Bears captured their first ever conference title and earned their sixth trip to the NAIA National Meet. At the NAIA National Meet, Shawnee State finished 4th overall for the second consecutive year. 

 

BEARS SIGN BELPRE'S GATES

Belpre High School's Breydon Gates has signed a letter of intent to run cross country at Shawnee State University.

Gates is a three-year letter winner in cross country and track.  He is a three-time state qualifier.  As a junior, he placed 9th in the two mile finishing in a time of 9:46 and in cross country finished 35th in a time of 16:59.  As a senior he ran a 16:20 at the state cross country meet to place 24th overall 

"Breydon with his high school running resume will help us compete at a strong level again next year," states Head Coach Eric Putnam.  "With playing soccer and running cross country in the fall, he still made All-Ohio.  That would indicate that he is a very good athlete."

Gates also lettered four time in soccer for the Eagles.

HUNTINGTON'S MAGILL SIGNS TO RUN AT SSU

Huntington High School's Brandon Magill has signed a letter of intent to continue his running career for the Bears as a member of the 2011 men's cross country team.

Magill lettered four times in both cross country and track for the Huntsmen.  At the Jesse Owens Track and Field Meet, Magill set a new school record in the two mile as he ran the race in 10:14.  As a senior, he ran a time of 16:37 at the Regionals at Pickerington North to qualify for the state meet.  At the state meet he finished 67th overall. 

"We are excited to have Brandon come to Shawnee in the fall and run," said Shawnee State Head Coach Eric Putnam.  "I feel like with the kind of training that Brandon has done in high school, he can come to Shawnee and improve a great deal. Brandon had a really strong senior year, running very well at the SVC meet and the Regional meet at Pickerington North. Brandon advanced to the state meet for the first time which is a plus to have some big race experience coming to college."

While attending Shawnee State, Magill plans to major in Education.
