November 22 @ NAIA National Championship

Shawnee State, ranked 16th in the NAIA, placed 22nd in its first ever appearance at the NAIA National Championship Meet on Saturday morning.  Minot State (ND) won the 28-team event for the second straight year.  Freshman Larry Gardner led the Bears with a time of 26:38 and a 98th place finish.  John Williams placed 112th in 26:49.  Josh Murray ran, 27:11, to finish 135th.  Dirk Hollar (27:25), Craig Arnett (27:29), Scott LeMaster (27:39), and Brett LeMaster (28:12) rounded out the scoring for the Bears.   British Columbia’s Jerry Ziak paced the field of 254 to win the individual championship.  He covered the 8k-course in 24:22.

 
November 1 @ AMC/NAIA Region IX Championship

Shawnee State, ranked 18th in the NAIA, finished 2nd out of 13 teams at the AMC/NAIA Region IX Championship.  John Williams led the men's team with a 13th place finish in a time of 26:57.  Larry Gardner placed 14th in 26:58.  Craig Arnett finished 16th in 27:03.  Brett LeMaster (27:19) and Scott LeMaster (27:26) finished 21st and 23rd respectively to round out the scoring for the Bears. 

 
October 17 @ Wilmington Fall Classic

Shawnee State captured its 5th meet championship of the season finishing first out of 15 teams at the Wilmington Fall Classic.  Larry Gardner led the men's squad with a 4th place finish in a time of 26:09.  Brett LeMaster placed 5th with a time of 26:14.  John Williams followed with a 6th place finish in 26:17.  Craig Arnett (26:26) and Josh Murray (26:28) rounded out the scoring for SSU.  In all, eight runners for SSU ran 26:36 or faster.

 
October 10 @ All-Ohio Championship Meet

Shawnee State competed at the All-Ohio Meet.  The men's squad, ranked 20th in the NAIA, finished 15th out of 37 schools competing.  However, they placed 4th in the NCAA Division II/NAIA division.  Kent State won the overall men's championship.  Brett LeMaster led the Bears with a time of 27:29.  He placed 55th overall and 5th in SSU's grouping.  Larry Gardner placed 68th/9th in 27:43.  Josh Murray (28:03), John Williams (28:18), and Scott LeMaster (28:24) rounded out the scoring for SSU.

 
October 4 @ Hagan Stone Classic
Shawnee State captured its 4th meet championship of the season at the Hagan Stone Classic in Greensboro, NC.  John Williams won his first meet of the season as he finished the 8k course in 26:33.  Brett LeMaster placed 2nd in 26:44 and Larry Gardner finished 3rd in 27:06.  Scott LeMaster (27:45) and Craig Arnett (27:54) finished 5th and 6th respectively to round out the scoring for the Bears.
 
October 4 @ Rio Grande Invitational
Shawnee State University finished 3rd out of 9 teams at the Rio Grande Invitational on Saturday morning.  Josh Murray led the "B" squad with an 11th place finish in time of 27:45.  Brandon Phelps finished 14th in 28:14.  Kris Jones, Blake Jones, and Chad Danner rounded out the scoring for the Bears.
 
September 27 @ Greater Louisville Classic
Shawnee State finished 10th out of 31 teams at the Greater Louisville Classic.  John Williams led the men’s squad with a 54th place finish.  He covered the 8000 meter course in a time of 26:47.  Craig Arnett (27:10), Larry Gardner (27:13), Brett LeMaster (27:17, and Scott LeMaster (27:41) rounded out the scoring for the Bears.  SSU finished 6th of 23 NAIA schools competing in the event.  
 
September 20 @ Friendship Invitational

Shawnee State finished a close second behind NCAA Division I Wright State University with only five points separating the two teams at the Friendship Invitational.  SSU finished ahead of Cedarville University in addition to 3 other teams.  John Williams was the top runner for SSU, finishing third. His time of 25:45 puts him in the record book for the fastest time in SSU history.  Brett LeMaster (26:07) and Larry Gardner (26:15) were sixth and seventh respectively.  Craig Arnett finished eleventh with a time of 26:41, while Dirk Hollar rounded out the scoring with a time of 26:57 and a thirteenth place finish. 

 
September 13 @ Centre Invitational
Shawnee State, ranked 21st in the NAIA, finished 1st out of 10 teams at the Centre College Invitational Meet.  John Williams led the men’s team at Centre with a second place finish in a time of 27:05.  Brett LeMaster (27:44) placed third.  Freshmen Larry Gardner (27:52) and Scott LeMaster (27:57) finished fifth and sixth respectively.  Dirk Hollar (28:39) rounded out the scoring for the Bears with a twelfth place finish.
 
September 13 @ Kentucky Christian Invitational
Blake Jones won the Kentucky Christian Invitational with a time of 29:01 and led the Bears to their 4th straight win at KCC.  Chad Danner (29:29), Luke Lyons (29:31), and David Walker (29:56) placed 2 – 4.  Brandon Phelps rounded out the scoring with a sixth place finish in 30:10.  Shawnee State finished ahead of Kentucky Christian, Ohio Valley, and Mt. St. Joseph.
 
September 6 @ Hanover Invitational

Shawnee State Cross placed 7th out of 19 teams at the Hanover Invitational.  John Williams led the Bears with a16th place finish in a time of 26:39.  Larry Gardner (27:59), Brett LeMaster (28:02), Craig Arnett (28:08), and Adam Tolle (28:22) rounded out the scoring for the Bears.

 
August 29 @ SSU Invitational

The Shawnee State University Men’s Cross Country Team, ranked 21st in the NAIA pre-season poll, captured its second consecutive SSU Invitational.  The Bears finished ahead of Charleston, Pikeville, Georgetown, and Kentucky Christian to capture the first meet of the 2003 season.  John Williams paced the Bears with a third place finish in a time of 26:32.  Larry Gardner placed 5th with a time of 27:14 in his collegiate debut.  Brett LeMaster, Craig Arnett, Scott LeMaster, and Adam Tolle placed seven through ten for Shawnee State.  Pikeville’s Alex Chemwolo set the course record with a time of 25:42 to capture first place.  Mikey Guinn of the University of Charleston ran 26:00 to take second overall.
