Rio Grande |
The
Shawnee State University Men’s Basketball Team lost 63-56
to The University of Rio Grande in the finals of the
American Mideast Conference Tournament. With
the game tied at 56, Rio Seth Deerfield drained a 3-pointer
from the top of the key with 30 seconds left in the game.
Antwain Lavender drew a great deal of contact on his
attempt to tie the game with 9.8 seconds left.
There was no call on the play and Rio grabbed the
rebound. Rio extended the lead as they canned 4 of 6 free throws over
the final 8 seconds. Adam Davenport led SSU with 22
points and 10 rebounds. Antwain Lavender added 14 points. Jerry Barlow led Rio
Grande with 22 points.
Twenty of those came in the second half. Seth Deerfield had 14 points and Chris Ballenger added 13
points. Shawnee State shot just 36% (20-55) from the
field compared to 40% (19-47) for Rio Grande.
Rio Grande connected on 16 of 28 attempts from the
free throw line compared to 12 of 14 for Shawnee State.

The
Shawnee State University Men’s Basketball Team defeated
Walsh University 94-91 in overtime to advance to the finals
of the American Mideast Conference Tournament.
Antwain Lavender led Shawnee State with 38 points.
He played all but the final 5 seconds of the game.
He connected on 10 of 16 from the field including 8
of 12 from beyond the arc.
He also hit 10 of 11 from the free throw line.
Delano Thomas had 20 points, 15 rebounds, 5 blocks,
and 5 assists.
Jason Burston had 15 points and Jeff Fraley added 10.
J. R. Ogletree led Walsh with 28 points.
Jason Hamilton had 27 points and 7 rebounds.
Jerome Sandifer recorded a double-double with 16
points and 15 rebounds. Shawnee
State trailed by as many as 10 in the second half.
They trailed by 6 with 26.7 seconds remaining in
regulation.
Jason Burston, a 21% shooter from beyond the arc,
nailed a 3-pointer to cut the lead to three.
Walsh turned the ball over and Kevin Cunningham
nailed a 3-pointer on his only shot attempt in the game, to
tie it at 85 with 5 seconds remaining.
Walsh again committed a turnover on the in bounds
play to give the Bears a chance to win in regulation.
Antwain Lavender missed a 3-point attempt from the
top of the key, and Delano Thomas missed the tip-in to send
the game to OT.
Shawnee State held the 94-91 lead with 4.9 seconds in the
extra period when Jeff Fraley blocked Jason Hamilton’s
3-pointer to seal the game for the Bears.

Roberts Wesleyan College 89-70. Six players
scored in double figures for the Bears.
Adam Davenport led all scorers with 19 points on the
night. Delano

Jeff Fraley added 14 points.
Antwain Lavender, Terrance Davison, and Curt Grimes
had 10 points apiece. Lavender
added 10 assists on the night. James
Floyd led the Raiders with 17 points on the night.
Dave Rudy had 16 points and Matt Lipiska added 11
points. Shawnee
State shot 50% (33-66) from the field, including 38% (9-24)
from beyond the arc.
Roberts Wesleyan shot just 39% (27-70) from the
field.
Shawnee State tallied 18 assists while committing
just 6 turnovers.

The
Shawnee State University Men’s Basketball Team closed out the
regular season and snapped a four game losing streak with a 92-60
win over Notre Dame College. Jeff Fraley led the Bears
with 28 points on 9 of 15 shooting including 7 of 12 from beyond the
arc. Antwain Lavender
added 15 points. Adam
Davenport and Delano Thomas had 12 points each.
Thomas added 13 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Niles
Wadley led the Falcons with 16 points.
He was the only player to reach double figures for Notre
Dame. As
a team, the Bears shot 32 of 57 from the field for 56%.
They were 14 of 24 from behind the 3-point line for 58%.
Shawnee State dominated the glass, grabbing 45 rebounds to
Notre Dame’s 26.

The Shawnee
State University Men’s Basketball Team lost their 4th
straight game as they fell to 11th ranked
Cedarville University 84-58.
Antwain Lavender and Delano Thomas led the Bears with 12
points apiece. Jason
Burston added 11 points for SSU.
Six players scored in double figures for the Yellow Jackets.
Mugabe Thomas led the way with 15 points.
Barry Chamberlain and Justin Lower scored 12 points
each.
As a team, the Bears shot 42% (21-50) in the contest
compared to 52% (33-64) for Cedarville.
Cedarville won the battle of the boards 35-31.
The Yellow Jackets committed 13 turnovers to the
Bears’ 19.

their third straight game as they lost to Malone College 88-81.
Shawnee
State trailed by as much as 22 points in the second half before they
cut the lead to 5 with 1:21 remaining.
The Bears could not close the margin any further.
Adam
Davenport led the Bears with 22 points and 17 rebounds.
Antwain Lavender and Jeff Fraley had 15 points apiece.
Terrance Davison added 14 points.
Seth Coblentz led Malone with 31 points on the night.
He came into the game averaging just 9.6 per game.
Jason Hess had 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Shane Conwell added 13 points.

University of Rio Grande 59-48.
Jason Burston led the Bears with a career-high 16 points on
the night.
Delano Thomas was the only other Bear to reach double
figures with 14 points.
He also grabbed 9 rebounds.
Seth Deerfield and Chris Ballenger led Rio Grande with 17
points apiece.
The
Bears struggled horribly on both ends of the floor.
SSU shot just 29% from the floor as they connected on
20 of 69 field goal attempts.
They were even worse from beyond the arc as they hit
just 2 of 17 3-point field goal attempts for 12%.
On the other end of the floor, Rio Grande hit 54% of
their shots from the field despite going 0 for 7 from behind
the arc.
Rio also hit 19 of 27 attempts from the free throw
line compared to just 6 of 10 for the Bears. |

of conference play as they traveled to 22nd ranked Geneva
College on Saturday afternoon.
Geneva defeated SSU 76-61.
Shawnee State falls to 17-10, while Geneva improves
to 16-9. Delano Thomas and Adam Davenport led
the Bears with 19 points apiece.
They were the only Bears to reach double figures.
Stefan
Grundberg led the Golden Tornadoes with 21 points and 10
rebounds. Matt
Small chipped in with 13 points.
Jerome Moss and Tim Sawyer added 11 points apiece.
Geneva dominated in almost every category.
They shot 47% compared to just 38% for SSU.
Geneva out rebounded SSU 39-29.
Shawnee State shot just 2 of 16 from beyond the arc,
while Geneva hit on 8 of 23 attempts from beyond the arc. |

Cedarville |
The
Shawnee State University Men’s Basketball Team knocked off
8th ranked Cedarville University 67-66. With
the game tied 66-66 Shawnee State took the ball out of
bounds at the far end of the court with 5.7 seconds
remaining in the game.
Antwain Lavender drove the length of the floor and
was fouled taking the ball to the rim with 1.0 second on the
clock. He hit
the first free throw to seal the win for the Bears.
Lavender appeared to intentionally missed the second
attempt, which Delano Thomas tipped out to half-court as
time expired. Lavender
and Jeff Fraley led the Bears with 18 points apiece.
Fraley connected on 6 of 7 3-point shots on the
night. Adam Davenport added 13 points.
Delano Thomas had 9 points and 11 rebounds. Mugabe
Thomas led Cedarville with 28 points.
Drew Borton added 10 points on the night. As
a team, the Bears shot 48% (24-50) from the field including
59% (10-17) from beyond the arc.

Todd Henry led Tiffin with 21 points.
He was 3 of 3 from behind the 3-point line and 12 of
13 from the free throw line.
Steve Beretich had 19 points.
Kenny Salway added 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Tiffin held a distinct advantage at the free throw line as
they connected on 26 of 32 attempts for 81%. By
comparison, Shawnee State was just 10 of 17 from the free

Lavender was the only Bear to score in double figures.

including 3 of 8 from behind the 3-point line.
Terrance Davison and Adam Davenport had 8 points apiece.
Eric
Jenkins led ODU with 18 points on the night.
Micah Stith had 15 points.
Mike Lee and Mike Feibig added 12 points each. The
game was won at the free throw line as each team connected on 25 of
61 field goal attempts for 41%.
ODU, however, hit 16 of 22 attempts from the free throw line.
SSU attempted just 14 foul shot and connected on just 7 of

in NAIA Division II, snapped a 3-game skid as they knocked
off AMC foe, Malone College 88-82. Curt Grimes led the
Bears with a career high 29 points on 11 of 15 shooting from
the field, including 7 of 9 from behind the arc. Jeff
Fraley had 13 points. Antwain Lavender, Adam
Davenport, and Delano Thomas added 11 points apiece.
Thomas added 12 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks.
Tim
LaFleur and Jason Hess had 21 points each for the
Pioneers. As
a team, the Bears shot 51% from the field including 40% from
beyond the 3-point line. The Pioneers connected on 48%
of their shots including 37% from behind the arc. Shawnee
State jumped out to a quick 21-9 lead before Malone would
rally to take a 45-43 lead at half. The teams would
battle back and forth until the 6:01 mark, when SSU went
ahead to stay. The Bears took the lead 74-72 on an

in NAIA Division II, fell to the #1 ranked Georgetown College
Tigers, 86-63.
Jeff
Fraley led the Bears with 19 points as he knocked down 5 of 7 shots
from beyond the 3-point line.
Curt Grimes added a season-high 16 points.
Antwain Lavender had 11 points and 8 assists. Quinton
Bailey led all scorers with 21 points.
Andre Mahorn added 19 points for the Tigers.
Casey Alsop chipped in 18 points. As
a team, the Bears shot just 37% from the field compared to 52% for
Georgetown.
The Tigers out rebounded the Bears 39-35.
Shawnee State committed 20 turnovers and Georgetown
capitalized by scoring 24 points off those miscues.

Hamilton led Wilberforce with 21 points, 9 rebounds, and 7
blocks.
Helie White added 15 points for the Bulldogs. Shawnee
State out rebounded Wilberforce 48-36 in the contest.
However, the Bulldogs shot 48% from the field
compared to the Bears’ 39%.
Shawnee State committed 20 turnovers compared to just
11 for Wilberforce.

loss on Saturday afternoon.
Walsh defeated Shawnee 78-69.
Jeff

shooting.
Terrance Davison added 18 points and Delano Thomas
chipped in with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
J.R. Ogletree led Walsh with 28 points on 11 of 13 free
throw shooting.
Jason Hamilton added 23 points for the Cavaliers.
For the game Walsh shot 45%(26-57) from the field compared
to Shawnee’s 32%(21-65). Walsh also won the battle on the
boards out rebounding Shawnee 44-39.
The Bears forced 17 Cavalier turnovers, while only

Max Hunter led the Trailblazers with 9 points and 13
rebounds.
Eddie Dawson had 11 points and 7 rebounds. As
a team, the Bears shot 51% from the field, including 47%
from behind the arc.
The Bears out rebounded OU-Southern 56-33.
SSU’s defense forced 16 turnovers and held OUS to
28% shooting on the night. Shawnee
State jumped out to a 33-0 lead early in the game.

Shawnee State University Men’s Basketball Team, ranked 19th
in NAIA Division II,
defeated
Tiffin University 75-59. Shawnee
State held a 34-27 halftime lead. The Bears went on a 15-4 run
to start the second period and held a 49-31 lead at the 15:00
mark. Tiffin would cut the Bears' lead all the way down to 3
with 8:00 remaining in the game. Jeff Fraley hit 3-pointers on
two of SSU's next three possessions to expand the Bears' lead.
Shawnee State's defense kicked in and allowed the Dragons to score
just 3 points, all on fee throws, over the final 8:03. Fraley
led all scorers with 25 points on 8 of 10 shooting, including 7 of 9
from behind the arc. Adam Davenport had 17 points.
Delano Thomas added 12 points and 17 rebounds. Antwain
Lavender chipped in 10 points and 7 assists. As
a team, the Bears shot 53% from the field. They hit 55% from
three point land. SSU out rebounded Tiffin 36-28.

He had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 blocked shots.
He also tallied 2 assists and 2 steals. Micah
Stith led ODU with 18 points on the night.
Mike Lee and Eric Jenkins had 12 points apiece.
Mike Feibig added 11 points. As
a team, the Bears shot 48.5% (33-68) from the field.
They out rebounded the Panthers 44-38. Shawnee
State trailed by as much as 10 in the first half of play.
The game went back and forth during the first six minutes of
the second half before the Bears pulled away.

Division II, defeated Campbellsville University 86-83. The
game was tied at 22 in the first half when CU went on a 20-2 run.
SSU then went on an
11-4 run to trail 46-35 at the half. Jason Burston nailed a
3-pointer as time expired to cap the comeback for the Bears. Antwain Lavender led all scorers with
23
points on the night. Adam Davenportand Burston finished with 15
points apiece. Jeff Fraley added 12 points and Terrance
Davison had 10 points for the Bears.

The
Shawnee State University Men’s Basketball Team, ranked 19th
in NAIA Division II, defeated a surprisingly pesky OU-Chillicothe
team 92-81.
Antwain
Lavender led the Bears with 34 points, 6 rebounds, 6
assists, and 5 steals on the afternoon.
Adam Davenport had 19 points and 6 rebounds.
Terrance Davison chipped in with 11 points and 6
boards. Chris
Adkins led the Hilltoppers with 25 points.
Dave Cochenour added 23 points, with 20 of those
coming in the first half. The game was tied at 42 at
the half, with OU-Chillicothe connecting on 58% of their
field goals in the first period.
The Bears shot a very respectable 47%.
In the second period, the rolls reversed.
SSU shot 60% in the second period and held the
Hilltoppers to 48%.

| The
Shawnee State University Men’s Basketball Team, ranked
19th in NAIA Division II, dropped an 84-69 decision to NCAA
Division I Youngstown State. Antwain Lavender led the
short-handed Bears with 27 points on the night. Adam
Davenport chipped in with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
TeJay Anderson and Adam Bauman led Youngstown with 13 points
apiece. Despite playing without starters Andre Horton
and Curt Grimes, Shawnee State was locked in a 36-36 tie at
halftime. Youngstown’s depth and size took over in the
second half. YSU shot 55.2% from the field in the second
period, with the majority of those baskets came in the
paint. YSU held a 46-20 advantage on points scored in the
paint. |

Antwain Lavender scored 23 points and Andre Horton added 22
points in the win. Adam Davenport had 15 points and 13
rebounds and Terrance Davison added 13 points in his
collegiate debut. |
