Ted Tom

The 2010 season will mark Ted Tom’s third season as the Head Baseball Coach.  In addition to his duties as Head Baseball Coach, Ted added the title of Assistant Athletic Director in charge of Academics and Compliance in the fall of 2009.

In 2009, he led the Baseball Bears to a 25-30 record and for the first time since 2003, a winning record (18-16) in the American Mideast Conference.  Four of his players earned All-AMC honors and two more earned NAIA Scholar Athlete Awards including: senior outfielder Drew Howard (1st Team), senior third basemen Logan Crabtree (2nd Team), sophomore pitcher Andrew Carter (2nd Team), junior first basemen Brian Ramey (2nd Team and NAIA Scholar Athlete) and junior catcher Mike Roelker (NAIA Scholar Athlete).

In Tom’s first season at the helm of his alma mater, the Bears finished 16-29 with a 10-16 conference mark.  Three of his players earned All-AMC honors including: Jon Venters (2nd Team), Drew Howard (HM), and Zac Alexander (HM).  Jeremy Blackston earned the honor of NAIA Scholar Athlete as well.

Prior to Shawnee State, Tom spent 2007 as the outfield instructor at the IMG Baseball Academies in Bradenton, FL where he also was a head coach in Florida Collegiate Instructional League. 

Ted spent the 2005 and 2006 seasons as the volunteer assistant coach at Indiana University.  While there, his responsibilities included outfield play, coaching first base, and assisting with the hitters while also working on Sembower Field.  During this time, he earned his master’s degree in athletic administration.

During his career as a coach, Coach Tom has had the opportunity to work with 18 players who have gone on to professional baseball including a 2nd, 5th and 8th round draft picks in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

Tom is no stranger to Shawnee State Bears baseball.  He graduated from Shawnee State with a degree in Sport Management with minors in business and sport coaching in 2004 and having been a red-shirt member of the 2000 team that finished 5th in the NAIA World Series.  As a player, Tom earned All-AMC honors as well as the Joe Smith Memorial Award which is given to the outstanding senior student that best exemplifies the attitude and sportsmanship of Smith.  In the summer of 2003, he played for the Clarinda A’s in the MINK Collegiate Wood Bat Summer League.

Coach Tom also has extensive experience in summer baseball.  In 2008, he was the mentor of the Southern Ohio Copperheads in the Great Lakes League.  During 2006, he was the head coach of the Outer Banks Daredevils of the Coastal Plain League.  He was the head coach of the Miami Valley Express U-17 team during 2002 that went to the CABA World Series.

Ted is married to the former Lisa Dingus of South Webster, Ohio.  The couple resides in Portsmouth.

 
Chris Moore - Recruiting Coordinator

Chris Moore is entering his third season as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Shawnee State.  His responsibilities also include instructing infielders and coaching third base.  Last year, he helped mentor Andy Carter to All-AMC (2nd team) honors, while helping the Bears to their best season since 2001.  During his first season with the Bears, Chris helped two members of the pitching staff break single season all-time records; Jon Venters for strikeouts (66) and Jeff Case for appearances (21). 

Chris came to Shawnee State from the IMG Baseball Academy in Bradenton, FL., where he served two seasons as head coach, leading the team to a 38-15 overall record.  During his time at IMG, he sent 19 players to college baseball programs around the country and coached three top 10 round picks; Paolo Espino (10th round, Cleveland Indians), Tyler Pastornicky (5th round, Toronto Blue Jays), and John Ryan Murphy (2nd round, New York Yankees).  Prior to his time at IMG, Chris was an assistant coach at Indiana University for three years, starting as the volunteer assistant in charge of outfielders and finishing his tenure in Bloomington as the hitting coach as well as being responsible for catchers.  While at Indiana, Chris had the opportunity to coach eight players that moved on to the professional ranks including Kevin Mahar, who made his major league debut as an outfielder with the Texas Rangers in 2007.  Before his time at IU, Chris served as an infield and hitting coach at Tacoma Community College in Washington State where he helped lead the team to record breaking seasons for wins in back-to-back years.  During his 10-year career, Chris has had the opportunity to coach a total of 22 players that have gone on to the professional ranks, 13 of which are still playing currently. 

Chris has also had success coaching summer ball throughout his career.  He just finished his second season as the pitching coach for the Southern Ohio Copperheads in the Great Lakes League.  During that summer, the Copperheads finished in 2nd place, which is the best finish in that organization’s history.  Chris’ pitching staff that summer led the league in strikeouts and batting average against.  David Jensen finished with a 0.30 ERA, which was best mark ever in Great Lakes League history.  Chris also spent four summers coaching in the Florida Collegiate Instructional League, reaching the league championship game three times and winning the overall championship twice. 

Chris started his playing career at Tacoma Community College (WA.) as a 1st baseman and pitcher and continued playing at Central Washington University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a business administration minor.  He is single and resides in Portsmouth, OH. 

 
Bryan Doberdruk, Student Assistant Coach

Bryan is in his 2nd year as the Bears Strength and Conditioning coach.

Bryan graduated from Shawnee State with a degree in Exercise Science. He transferred to Shawnee State after a 2 year stint at Mercyhurst College.  In his two years as a Bear, he started 81 games scoring 57 runs, with 12 doubles, three triples, three homeruns, and 20 stolen bases while hitting at a .309 clip.  His three homeruns during the 2008 campaign were a team high.

Bryan resides in Ironton where he currently works at Elite Rehab & Fitness as a Sports Performance Coach.
