May 7 vs. Tiffin (@ NAIA Regional Tournament)
Shawnee State's season came to an end as the Bears lost their second game in the NAIA Region IX Tournament.  SSU fell to Tiffin by a score of 10-1.  Nate Pool took the loss as he gave up 6 runs (3 earned) in 5.2 innings.  He allowed 8 hits and struck out 2 batters while walking 1.  He hit 5 batters as well.  The Bears managed 7 hits in the game, but were able to scratch the scoring column once in the 4th inning.
 
May 7 vs. Point Park (@ NAIA Regional Tournament)
Shawnee State lost its opening round game in the NAIA Region IX Tournament to Point Park College by a score of 3-1.  Tom Spille (5-3) took the loss despite pitching a solid game.  He worked 9.0 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits.  He walked 4 batters and struck out 3.  The Bears managed six hits in the game.  Two of those were by Tom Janis.
 
May 2 @ Tiffin

Shawnee State split a double-header with Tiffin University on Friday afternoon by scores of 4-2 and 1-11.  The loss in Game 2 coupled with Ohio Dominican's sweep of Rio Grande on Saturday, locks up second place in the AMC South for the Bears.  Dereck Heming (2-4) picked up the win in the opener.  He allowed just two runs on 6 hits over 7.0 innings.  He struck out one and walked two.  Brent Johnson had two hits in the game with a run scored and an RBI.  Tom Janis, Jarred Perdue, Nolan Crabtree, and Brian Hines all added hits. Matt Thompson (4-1) took the loss in Game 2.  In his worst outing of the season, he allowed 11 runs (8 earned) on 12 hits over 5.2 innings.  Andy Malone had two hits in the game for SSU.  Ted Tom, Trevor Vaught, Brent Johnson, and Jake Jakubowski had one hit apiece. 

 
April 26 @ Ohio Dominican

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team lost a double-header to Ohio Dominican by scores of 7-5 and 8-1.  The losses drop SSU to 21-14 (14-4 AMC) on the season, and out of 1st place in the AMC South Division.  Ohio Dominican improves to 29-13 (13-3 AMC).  The Panthers jump one game ahead of the Bears in the loss column.  Tom Spille (5-2) took the loss in the opener as he allowed nine hits for the 3rd straight game.  ODU picked up seven runs (all earned) over 5.0 innings off those nine hits.  Spille walked one and struck out two.  Shawnee State did manage ten hits and five runs off of one of the AMC’s most dominant pitchers.  Jonathon Sanchez entered the game with a 4-1 record to go along with an ERA of 1.62.  The Bears picked up two hits apiece from Trevor Vaught, Brent Johnson, and Ted Tom. Nate Pool (5-3) took the loss in Game 2.  He allowed seven runs on five hits in just 4.0 innings.  Shawnee State managed just four hits off Chris Ofat (5-4).  Brent Johnson had two of those. 

 
April 24 @ Urbana

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team swept a double-header from Urbana University by scores of 15-3 and 10-8.  Matt Thompson (4-0) picked up the win in the opener.  He worked 6.0 innings and allowed 3 unearned runs on 4 hits.  He struck out 4 and did not allow a walk.  Nate Bukiwiecz worked the final inning and did not allow a hit.  Tom Janis was 4-5 with a double and 2 RBI.  Jarred Perdue and Trevor Vaught had 3 hits apiece.  Perdue had a double, homerun, and 4 RBI.  Vaught scored 3 runs and stole a base.  Brent Johnson and Pat Looney had 2 hits each. Brent Johnson (2-2) picked up the win in the nightcap.  He worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed3 runs on 6 hits and 6 walks.  Tom Janis and Jarred Perdue continued their hot hitting.  Janis was 4-4 with 3 runs scored.  He had a double and 2 RBI.  Perdue was 3-4 with a triple, homerun, and 5 RBI.  Pat Looney and Jake Jakubowski had 2 hits apiece. 

 
April 25 @ Ohio State

Shawnee State University lost to Ohio State University 9-0.  Dereck Heming (1-4) took the loss for the Bears.  He gave up 7 runs on 8 hits over 5.0 innings.  Chris Manners (3-1) picked up the win for the Buckeyes.  Shawnee State managed just 2 hits in the game.  The Bears had singles from Brent Johnson and Ted Tom.  

 
April 22 vs. Rio Grande

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team swept a double-header from the University of Rio Grande by scores of 11-7 and 3-2. Tom Spille (5-1) picked up the win in the opener.  The Bears staked him to a 10-1 lead after one inning.  Rio would chip away and close to within 10-7 in the 5th inning.  Brian Hines worked the final 2.0 innings to pick up his second save of the season.  Shawnee State got two hits each from Trevor Vaught, Tom Janis, Brent Johnson, and Ted Tom.  Janis and Johnson had 3 RBI apiece. Nate Pool (5-2) got the win in Game 2.  He worked 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.  He struck out 8 batters and walked 4.  Jared Perdue had 2 hits, 1 RBI, and scored 1 run.  The Bears also had RBI’s from Dan Wysong and Nolan Crabtree.

 
April 15 @ Cedarville

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team swept a double-header from Cedarville University by scores of 7-0 and 7-2.  Nate Pool (4-2) picked up the win in the opener.  He scattered seven hits over 6.0 innings.  He struck out six and allowed just one walk.  Matt Thompson worked the final inning.  He struck out two and did not allow a hit.  Shawnee State pounded out 10 hits in the game.  The Bears had three each from Dan Wysong and Brent Johnson.  Wysong had two doubles and two RBI.  Dereck Heming (1-3) won the nightcap.  He allowed two unearned runs on five hits.  He struck out two and did not allow a walk.  Nate Bukiewicz worked the final 2.0 innings.  He allowed one walk and one hit while striking out two.  The Bears continued their hot hitting as they collected 12 hits in the contest.  Ted Tom was a perfect 3-3 on the day with one run scored and two RBI.  Jarred Perdue and Brent Johnson had two hits each in the game.

 
April 12 vs. Tiffin

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team split a double-header with Tiffin University by scores of 4-3 and 1-8.  Tom Spille (4-1) picked up the win in the opener.  He allowed three runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.  He walked one batter while striking out six.  Derreck Heming worked the final 1 1/3 innings to record his first save of the season.  Shawnee State's Pat Looney hit a two-run pinch hit homerun to stake the Bears to a 4-1 lead.  Nate Pool (3-2) had an uncharacteristic outing as he surrendered seven runs (all earned) in just 2.0 innings of work.  Brian Hines allowed just one run as he worked the final 5.0 innings of the game.  Shawnee State managed just 5 singles in the game.

 
April 8 @ Marietta

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team lost to Marietta College 7-0.  Shawnee State managed just two hits on the day, singles by Brent Johnson and Jarred Perdue, as Marietta’s Matt DeSalvo (7-1) struck out 11 Bears in 7.0 innings of work.  Derrick Heming (0-3) took the loss.  He allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits in 6.0 innings.  

 
April 5 vs. Ohio Dominican

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team split a double-header with 22nd ranked Ohio Dominican University.  Ohio Dominican won the opener by a score of 2-1 in 11 innings.  Shawnee State had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the 10th, but failed to get Ted Tom home from 3rd base with 1 out in the inning.  Derrick Heming (0-2) took the loss in relief of Tom Spille.   Spille worked 9.0 innings of 5-hit baseball.  He struck out 5 and did not walk a batter.  Heming gave up 1 unearned run on 2 hits.  He allowed 2 walks and struck out 1.  Trevor Vaught, Dan Wysong, and Brent Johnson had 2 hits apiece.  Benny Cepeda picked up the win for ODU. Shawnee State won the nightcap 1-0 in another pitcher’s duel.  The Bears picked up a run in the 1st inning and Nate Pool (3-1) made it hold up for the win.  Pool worked 7.0 innings and allowed just 2 hits.  Dan Wysong drove in Trevor Vaught for the game’s only run.

 
April 3 @ Otterbein

Shawnee State University lost to Otterbein College 12-7. For the second straight game, the Bears’ defense did not perform.  SSU committed 6 errors in the contest.  The Bears committed 7 at Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday.  “We gave it away again today,” said SSU Coach Tom Bergan.  “It was a very lackluster performance.”  Brent Johnson (1-2) took the loss.  He gave up 7 runs (2 earned) over 4.0 innings.  He gave up 6 hits and 3 walks and struck out three.  Jarred Perdue picked up 4 hits, an RBI, a stolen base, and 2 runs scored.  Trevor Vaught, Pat Looney, Brian Hines, and Ted Tom picked up 2 hits apiece.  Tom hit his first homerun of the year.

 
April 2 @ Eastern Kentucky
Shawnee State lost to NCAA Division I Eastern Kentucky 15-3.  Nate Bukiewicz took the loss as he gave up 13 runs (11 earned) in 3.1 innings.  Glenn Hannah pitched well in relief.  He worked the final 4.2 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits.  The Shawnee State defense committed 7 errors in the contest.  The Bears managed 6 hits in the game, 2 from Pat Looney.  Trevor Vaught added a solo homerun, his 3rd of the season.
 
April 1 @ Rio Grande

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team swept a double-header from The University of Rio Grande.   Shawnee State won the opener by a score of 9-4.  Tom Spille (3-1) picked up the complete game win as he allowed 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out 3.  He did not allow a walk.  Jared Perdue was a perfect 4-4 at the plate.  He had a double and a triple and scored 2 runs.  Ted Tom had 3 hits and scored 2 runs.  Trevor Vaught and Pat Looney had 2 hits apiece in the game.  The Bears won the nightcap 12-9 in 8 innings.  Nolan Crabtree hit the game winning 3-run homer.  Matt Thompson (2-0) picked up the win in relief.  He worked the final 3 1/3 innings and allowed 1 run on 1 hit.  Jeremy Cunningham had 3 hits and 4 RBI in the game.  Jared Perdue, Trevor Vaught, and Crabtree each had 2 hits in the game.  Shawnee State won the game after trailing 5-0 in the 1st inning.

 
March 30 @ Wright State
Wright State drilled Shawnee State 10-2.  The Raiders jumped all over the Bears for 8 runs in the first inning.  Derick Heming took the loss as he worked 5.0 innings and allowed 9 runs on 13 hits.  Tom Spille, Nate Pool, and Brian Hines worked 1.0 inning each to close out the game.  Dan Wysong and R. J. Niemer collected 2 hits apiece.
 
March 27 vs. Buena Vista (@ Cocoa Beach)

Shawnee State swept a double-header from Buena Vista College by scores of 2-0 and 6-5.  Matt Thompson picked up the 5-hit shut out in the opener over Buena Vista.  Thompson struck out 7 and did not allow a walk.  The Bears got RBI’s from Tom Janis and Trevor Vaught.  Janis had 2 hits in the game.  Brent Johnson picked up the second win over Buena Vista.  He pitched 6.0 innings allowing 4 unearned runs.  He struck out 4 batters and walked 2.  Brian Hines worked the final inning to pick up the save.  Tom Janis was 3-3 with 1 run scored and 2 RBI.  Pat Looney was 1-3 with 2 RBI.

 
March 26 vs. Centenary (@ Cocoa Beach)
Shawnee State defeated Centenary College 19-2.  Nate Pool picked up the win as he scattered 5 hits over 5.0 innings.  He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) while striking out 10 and walking none.  Pat Looney and Brent Johnson had 3 hits apiece in the contest.  Looney had 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.  Johnson scored 2 and drove in 2 runs. 
 
March 21 vs. Urbana
Shawnee State swept an American Mideast Conference double-header from Urbana University by scores of 15-7 and 7-2.  Shawnee State scored 14 times in the 6th inning of the opener to come back from a 7-1 deficit.  Tom Janis had 3 hits and drove in 4 runs in the game.  Brent Johnson and Dan Wysong had 2 hits apiece.  Brian Hines (2-2) picked up the win in relief of Nate Pool.  Tom Spille pitched a complete game 3-hitter in the nightcap.  He struck out 8 batters while allowing just 1 walk.  Dan Wysong and Jared Perdue had two hits each.
 
March 15 vs. John Carroll

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team split a double-header with John Carroll University.  Shawnee State won the opener 2-1.  The Bears lost the nightcap 6-5.  Aaron Morrison picked up the win in Game 1 in relief of Derrick Heming.  With the game tied at one in the sixth inning, Ted Tom drew a bases loaded walk to give SSU the lead.  Matt Craft pitched a scoreless 7th inning for the save.  Shawnee State trailed 6-0 in Game 2 before scoring 5 runs in the 6th inning.  Shawnee State had two hits apiece from Tom Janis and Andrew Malone.    Janis had 2 RBI and scored 1 run.  SSU also had RBI’s from Dan Wysong, Matt Craft, and Malone.  Brian Hines was tagged with the loss as he allowed 6 runs (2 earned) over 5.0 innings of work.   

 
March 13 vs. Cedarville
The Shawnee State University Baseball Team opened American Mideast Conference play with a double-header sweep over Cedarville University.  Shawnee State won the opener 8-4 behind a complete game from Tom Spille (1-1).  He scattered 8 hits, striking out 3, and he did not allow a walk. Shawnee State had homeruns from Trevor Vaught and Pat Looney.  Shawnee State trailed by 5-2 in the 6th inning of game 2. The Bears scored four runs in the sixth frame including three on a bases clearing double by Tom Janis. Matt Thompson (1-0) picked up the win in relief.
 
March 11 @ Charleston
Shawnee State split a double-header with the University of Charleston.  SSU lost the opener 4-3 and won Game 2 by a score of 8-5.  Shawnee State took a 3-1 lead into the 7th inning in Game 1, but gave up 3 runs to lose the game.  Brent Johnson took the loss as he gave up the game winning run.  Shawnee State had doubles from Jarred Perdue and Tom Janis.  SSU held a 5-2 lead heading into the 7th inning of Game 2.  Charleston scored 3 times in the inning to send the game to extra innings.  Shawnee State picked up 3 runs in the top of the 11th inning to seal the win.  Matt Craft worked the 3.0 innings to pick up the win.  Dan Wysong had 3 hits in the game.  Trevor Vaught, Matt Craft, and R.J. Niemer had 2 hits apiece.
 
March 7 vs. Alice Lloyd

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team swept a double-header from  Alice Lloyd College by scores of 8-4 and 4-0.  Brian Hines (Marion, OH) picked up the win for the Bears in the first game.  Hines (1-1) pitched 1 inning in relief allowing 1 run off of 3 hits.  Tom Spille (Cincinnati, OH) started for the Bears pitching 8 innings.  He allowed 6 hits and just 3 runs, while striking out 9.  Pat Looney (Athens, OH) led the Bears with 2 hits and 4 RBI’s.  Including a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to win the game.  Brent Johnson (London, OH) also tacked on 2 hits and 1 RBI for Shawnee.  Nate Pool (Springfield, OH)(1-1) picked up his first win of the season pitching for the Bears.  He went 7 innings allowing 1 hit, while striking out 8.  Ted Tom (Lancaster, OH) led the way for the Shawnee with 2 RBI’s and connecting on 1 hit.  

 
March 2 @ Tennessee Wesleyan
Tennessee Wesleyan completed the 3-game sweep as they defeated Shawnee State 14-4.  Tom Spille took the loss as he gave up 9 runs (5 earned) in 3.2 innings of work.  The Bears managed just 5 hits in the game, two by Dan Wysong.  
  
March 1 @ Tennessee Wesleyan
Shawnee State opened the 2003 season by losing a double-header to Tennessee Wesleyan by scores of 12-1 and 9-3.  Nate Pool took the loss in the opener as he gave up 10 runs (only 2 earned) in 3.2 innings.  He struck out 5 batters and walked 3, but was victimized by 4 Shawnee State errors.  SSU had 1 hit each from Tom Janis, Ted Tom, and Dan Wysong.  Brian Hines took the loss in the nightcap as he gave up 7 runs on 8 hits in 3.1 innings.  Trevor Vaught, Tom Janis, and Jarred Perdue had 2 hits each.
