BEARS FALL SHORT IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME
The Shawnee State men's basketball team fell short to UVA-Wise as they lost 79-74 in double-overtime to open the 2009-2010 season.

Junior Keelyn Franklin sank a jumper with 20 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime knotted at 58.  The Bears never trailed in the first overtime and had their chances to clinch the win, but shot a dismal 4-for-10 at the line to allow UVA-Wise to stay within striking distance.  UVA-Wise's Adam Hood hit two foul shots with 13 seconds to go to tie the game at 66.  Freshmen Tyler Morgan missed a shot with four seconds left and Mark Bryant followed with a jumper of his own, but never found the bottom of the net, sending the game into a second overtime.

Freshman Tyler Boyles nailed a three-pointer to open the second overtime period, but UVA-Wise's Adam Hood answered with one of his own to tie the game.  The Bears then turned the ball over on two straight possession, allowing the Cavaliers to take a 73-69 lead. Shawnee State's sophomore Matt Skaggs was fouled and went to the line for the double bonus, where he went 1-for-2, pulling the Bears within three.  UVA's Kevin Perry then missed two foul shots of his own.  Sophomore Ian Nixson got the Bears within two as he made 1-of-2 at the line.  Hood then sank two foul shots give the Cavaliers the four point lead.  Shawnee State missed a lay-up but an offensive rebound and put back by Boyles would put the Bears within two again.  Hood then sank two more shots from the charity strip to stretch the lead.  Shawnee State came up short as they missed a three-pointer and a UVA-Wise rebound and layup sealed the victory.

Tyler Morgan lead the Bears as he tallied a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds in his debut for the Bears.  Boyles came off the bench for the Bears to tallied 14 points and three rebounds and two assists in his debut.  Keelyn Franklin and Ian Nixson each tallied 13 points for the Bears.

COACH TOM ANNOUNCES 2010 WINTER PROSPECT CAMP
Head Coach Ted Tom would like to announce the 2010 Winter Prospect Camp will be held Saturday, January 16th, in the James A. Rhodes Athletic Center on the campus of Shawnee State University.  Registration begins at 9:30am and camp will begin at 10am.  Cost for the camp is $50 for position players or pitchers only and $75 for athletes that would like to be evaluated as dual players (pitcher and position).  The camp will feature a professional style workout, introduction to the Shawnee State Baseball program, a tour of campus and weight room facility, and a brief instructional period from the Shawnee State coaching staff.

“This is the third year we have had this camp and it is by far one of the most successful recruiting tools that we utilize,” says assistant coach Chris Moore.  “We have been very lucky with being able to recruit kids directly from this camp in the past and we are looking forward to doing it again.  Shawnee State University sells itself to anyone that takes the time to step on to campus, so this camp is another great opportunity for us the spread the good word from here in Portsmouth.”

This is a fantastic chance to show the coaching staff at Shawnee State that you are a good fit for the Bears’ program.  Due to the constraints of having this camp indoors, space is limited, so sign up soon.  Please fill out the registration form and send it back to us so we can reserve your spot.  If you have any questions, please call assistant coach Chris Moore at (740) 821-4351 or email at cmoore@shawnee.edu.

BEARS ANNOUNCE 2010 SCHEDULE

The Shawnee State Bears baseball team would like to announce their schedule for the upcoming 2010 baseball season highlighted with a three game series versus 2004 NAIA National Champion, Cumberland University and 2009 NAIA World Series participant Campbellsville coming to the friendly confines of Branch Rickey Park.  The schedule consists of 55 games with 25 of those being played on the home turf.

The 2010 season will mark the last year of competition in the American Mideast Conference as the Bears will join the Mid-South Conference in 2011.  It will also find the Bears getting a taste of the MSC as they will compete against University of the Cumberlands, West Virginia Tech, St. Catharine, Campbellsville, and former AMC rival Rio Grande throughout the year.

“The schedule that we have put together allows us to compete against several teams we will see in our future conference.  I am very confident that along with this part of the schedule and our demanding spring break trip, we will be prepared to make one last attempt at bringing the AMC conference championship back to Portsmouth,” says Head Coach Ted Tom.  “We are excited to compete against very good competition and see exactly where we stack up.”

Shawnee State opens at University of the Cumberlands in late February followed by a home stand with Spring Arbor (MI), 2007 NAIA Runner-up.  There will be single game home and home dates with Rio Grande before the Bears embark on their annual spring break trip.  To begin the trip, the Bears travel to Savannah, GA to compete in the Fairfield Inn Marriott Classic against Savannah College of Art & Design in a four game series.  From there, the Bears will play respective three game series with South Carolina-Beaufort and 2004 National Champion Cumberland University.

Upon their return, Shawnee will play St. Catharine followed by Campbellsville in a home tilt on St. Patrick’s Day during the week.  That weekend finds the Bears traveling to Pulaski, TN to compete against Martin Methodist College.

The last weekend of March gets the Bears into AMC play with a trip to Walsh followed by a home stand with Point Park.  The Bears will leave conference play for a weekend to play former conference foe Ohio Dominican in a split four game series.  After a trip to Cedarville, the Bears will spend the next two weekends at Branch Rickey Park against Malone and Notre Dame sandwiching a doubleheader with St. Catharine. The season finishes with a split conference series with Mount Vernon.

Coach Tom would also like to announce that during the Malone series on March 24th, the baseball program will be recognizing the 2000 team that finished 5th at the NAIA World Series.  "It has been ten years since Shawnee State Baseball made that magical run to Lewiston so I think it is only fitting to get as many of those players back to campus and honor them.  We speak on a regular basis about accomplishing many of the goals that group was able to achieve.  I am really looking forward to seeing many of those guys as well as giving our current players the opportunity to meet them," says Coach Tom.  More details of this weekend will be available soon.

SSU PLANS TO JOIN MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE IN 2010
Shawnee State University has announced its intent to withdraw from the American Mideast Conference following the 2009-2010 year.  The timing coincides with their application to join the Mid-South Conference beginning in the fall of 2010.

“We have enjoyed our time in the AMC having developed some great friendships and rivalries with numerous teams throughout the conference,” SSU Athletic Director Jeff Hamilton said.  “However we felt it was the right time to start looking at an alternative conference as more and more teams are looking elsewhere.”

Since its peak of 20 members in 2005 the AMC has seen a steady decline of schools to its current membership of 14 schools.  As more institutions explore other options, Shawnee State began to look at alternative conference affiliations.

Shawnee State has found a perfect match in the Mid-South Conference, which is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.  The Mid-South is one of the premier NAIA conferences in the country.  The MSC sponsors 17 varsity sports, including all 11 sports that Shawnee State offers.  The Mid-South Conference includes eight current permanent members: Campbellsville University, Georgetown College, Lindsey Wilson College, Pikeville College, St. Catharine College, University of the Cumberlands, West Virginia University Tech, and the University of Rio Grande. The University of Virginia – Wise will also be joining in the fall of 2010 along with Shawnee State.

Shawnee State will see a familiar rival, as the RedStorm of Rio Grande has chosen to join the Mid-South Conference beginning in the fall of 2009.  “We are extremely happy to have the opportunity to join the Mid-South Conference,” states Hamilton.  “We have a great deal of respect for the schools that comprise the MSC. Currently many of our teams play against these schools and we look forward in having a chance to compete with them in conference action!”

Shawnee State President, Rita Rice Morris, said that the decision to join the Mid-South Conference was made with involvement from coaches and university-wide committees.

“This is a good move for us,” Morris said. “Our athletic community is happy with the decision. It was clear when the Commissioner of the Mid-South Conference visited our campus that we are a wonderful fit.”

One of the many advantages of joining the Mid-South Conference is the reduced travel.  Our current set-up in the AMC includes three colleges eight hours in driving distance.  The furthest trip in the MSC will be a 237 mile four-hour trip to Lindsey Wilson College.

“The transition should really help our spring sports as we will now be heading south instead of north to compete.  So far it has been a smooth transition with everyone around the MSC being extremely welcoming and helpful,” said Hamilton.
