The Shawnee State men's and
women's basketball games schedule for today at Mount Vernon
has been postponed due to the weather. A make-up date
has not yet been set. |

SHAWNEE STATE VS. CARLOW GAME POSTPONED
The Shawnee State women's
game versus Carlow that was scheduled for Sunday, February 7
has been postponed until Thursday, February 18.
Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. |

Men's Basketball
BEARS SNAP LOSING STREAK WITH WIN OVER POINT PARK
The Shawnee State men's basketball team snapped their
losing streak as they defeated Point Park 84-68 on Saturday
afternoon. The Bears improve to 7-17 on the season and 4-7
in the AMC conference. Point Park falls to 7-13
overall and 3-8 in conference action.
The Bears only trailed 2-0 in the game, but
then the Bears
jumped out to an early 15-6 lead. Shawnee State outshot the Pioneers in the first half 41% to 28% and lead
29-19 at the half. The Bears extended their lead to as
many 20 in the second half. Both teams shot evenly
with each other in the second half, the difference was that
Shawnee State went to the free throw line 28 times, draining
24 of their attempts. Point Park only went to the line
18 times, making 12 of their attempts.
Freshmen Tyler Morgan and Mark Bryant had big
games for the Bears. Morgan led the Bears as he
tallied a career high 24 points to go with seven rebounds,
three assists, and two steals. Bryant tallied his
third double-double in four games as he scored 14 points and
pulled down a game high 15 rebounds. Sophomore Ian
Nixson added 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Junior Keelyn Franklin added nine points and five rebounds,
while freshman Zak Metz added nine points.
Point Park was led by T.J. Heatherington's 19
point, five rebounds, five assists performance, while Gerald
Warrick and Franco Sabastiani added 18 and 11 points for the
Pioneers.
Shawnee State shot 42% (27-for-65) in the
game, while Point Park shot 37% (25-for-68). From
beyond the arc the Bears made 5-of-23 attempts for 21%,
while the Pioneers made 6-of-16 attempts for 28%. At
the line, the Bears went 25-for-30 for 83%, while the
Pioneers went 12-for-21 fro 57%. [Box

The Bears travel to Mount Vernon on Tuesday,
February 9 for an AMC doubleheader. The men's game is set to
tip-off at 7:30 p.m. |

Women's Basketball
BEARS WIN BIG OVER URSULINE
The #8 ranked Shawnee State Bears had little trouble as they
defeated Ursuline College 91-61 on Friday evening to win
their seventh straight game. The Bears improve to 19-4
on the season and 11-2 in the AMC. Ursuline falls to
5-21 overall and 1-14 on the season.
Shawnee
State never trailed in the game and jumped out to an early
23-8 lead. The Bears stretched their lead as much as
21 in the first half and was up 44-25 at the break.
The Bears
continued to roll in the second half and extended their lead
to 36 with just over five minutes remaining the game and
went on to win 91-61.
Shawnee
State had a balanced attack offensively as 11 Bears made it
in the scoring column as five Bears scored in double
figures. Junior Jill Cropper had a big night as she
tallied 21 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the floor, and
pulling down eight rebounds. Senior Alison Meyer and
freshman Catrice Mitchell each tallied 11 points. Meyer
added four assists. Freshman Allison Nagle came off
the bench for a career-high 10 points, while senior Mallory
Albers added 10 points for the Bears.
Laura
Campbell led Ursuline with 23 points, while Krysti Tietze
added 17 points. Brittany Nair tallied a double-double
for the Arrows with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Shawnee
State shot well from the floor as they made 34-of-65
attempts for 52%, compared to the Arrows which made 24-of-67
attempts for 36%. The Bears drained 9-of-23 3-pointers
for 39%, while Ursuline made 7-of-20 attempts for 35%.
At the charity strip, Shawnee State made 14-of-25 attempts
for 56%. The Arrows went 6-for-9 at the line for 67%.

Women's Cross Country
BEARS SIGN FIRST RECRUIT FOR 2010 SEASON
Galion Northmor High School's Ashley Peters has signed a
letter of intent to continue her running career at Shawnee
State University. Peters is the first member of the
Bears' 2010 recruiting class.
Peters ran in the
state meet all four years of high school and improved her
spot every year. As a junior she finished 69th with a
time of 20:45 and as a senior finished 31st with a time of
20:23.
"Ashley is very
talented and we are hoping that she can run in our top 5 as
a freshman as well as help us with our depth," said Head
Cross Country Coach Eric Putnam.
The Bears finished
3rd at the American Mideast Conference Meet during the 2009
season.
WHEELERSBURG'S
RUGGLES SIGNS WITH SSU
Wheelersburg High School's Sarah Ruggles has signed a
letter of intent to run cross country at Shawnee State
University. Ruggles is the second member of the Bears'
2010 recruiting class.
Ruggles was a state qualifier in the 1600 meter run in
track. She won the SOC in cross country in 2008.
She has led her team to multiple SOC titles during her
career at Wheelersburg High School.
"Sarah will help us with our depth next year and I look for
her to run in our top seven consistently," said Head Cross
Country Coach Eric Putnam.
The Bears finished 3rd at the American Mideast Conference
Meet during the 2009 season.

Hall of Fame
CLAYTON AND WILLIAMS TO BE INDUCTED; COLLINS TO RECEIVE HOME
TEAM AWARD
The Shawnee State University Athletic Hall of
Fame will induct two new members on January 23. In
addition, Eugene Collins will receive the Ralph Kavanaugh
Home Team Award.
John Williams ran cross country at Shawnee
State from 2000 - 2003. He was a two-time all-American
Mideast Conference runner and a two-time National
Championship qualifier. During his time at Shawnee State he
held the fastest time of any runner with a time of 25:45 and
currently is in the top five runners ever at Shawnee State
and 13th on the all-time fastest time list. He
was a five-time meet medalist during his stellar career at
Shawnee State.
Tiffany Clayton played basketball at Shawnee
State from 1991 – 1995. She holds five school records
including 3-point field goals made in a game with 8, 3-point
field goals attempted in a game with 14, 3-point career
field goal percentage at 39.7%, 3-point season field goal
percentage at 46%, and career assists with 566. Clayton
currently ranks 19th on the all-time scoring
roster with 1,050 points. She earned all-conference
recognition in 1995.
Eugene Collins will receive the Ralph
Kavanaugh Home Team Award for his many years of service to
the Shawnee State Athletic Department.
The induction ceremony takes place as part of
Shawnee State’s Homecoming festivities on Saturday, January
23 at 11:00 p.m. in the Sodexo Ballroom in the University
Center. A limited number of seats are available to the

Cheerleading/Dance
CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS
Cheerleading tryouts are scheduled on March 26 from 6:00 to
9:00 p.m. and March 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the
Frank and Janis Waller Gymnasium. Candidates are
required to attend both dates.
Dance Team
tryouts are scheduled on April 2 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and
April 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the gym.

Athletics
FALL RECOGNITION DAYS SET
The Shawnee State Athletic Department has set the
dates for recognition of fall sports teams. The men's and
women's soccer teams recognition day has been rescheduled
for Saturday, February 6 during the basketball double-header.
The men's and women's cross country teams will be recognized
on Saturday, February 13 during the AMC basketball
double-header vs. Cedarville. The volleyball team will
be recognized on Saturday, February 20 during the AMC
basketball double-header vs. Cedarville.
Shawnee State had its most successful fall
season in school history. The volleyball team captured
its first ever American Mideast Conference Championship as
they posted a record of 12-0 in conference play and earned
their second consecutive trip to the NAIA National
Tournament. The volleyball team had six players earn
post season recognition, including All-Americans Heather
Koehler and Haley Halcomb.
The men's cross country team finished 2nd
in the AMC meet and 4th at the NAIA National Meet. The
captures three meet championships during the season and had
eight runners earn post season recognition, including
All-American Corey Culbertson.
The women's soccer team finished with its
best record in school history with a mark of 11-6 and 4th in
the American Mideast Conference. The Bears earned
their first spot in the AMC Tournament before falling to
Roberts Wesleyan. Seven players earned post season
recognition.
The women's cross country team finished
3rd out of 11 teams at the AMC Meet and three runners earned
individual bids to the NAIA National Meet. The Bears
had five runners earn post season recognition.
The men's soccer team finished with its
best record in school history with a record of 8-8-1.
Seven players earned post season recognition.
Shawnee State produced three
All-Americans, 26 all-conference honorees, and 11 NAIA
Scholar Athletes during the fall season. |

ELEVEN BEARS NAMED NAIA SCHOLAR
ATHLETES
The Shawnee State University had eleven fall
athletes that were named NAIA Scholar Athletes.
Criteria for being selected an NAIA
Scholar Athlete is that the student-athlete must be of
junior ranked and carry a 3.5 grade point average or above.
The eleven athletes include:Junior Tiffany
Dailey. Dailey, a volleyball player from Chillicothe,
Ohio, is a Business Administration major.
Senior Corey Culbertson. Culbertson, a
cross country runner from Logan, Ohio, is majoring in
Business Administration. Senior
Tyler Hickey. Hickey, a cross country runner from
Seaman, Ohio, is graduating this fall with a degree in Fine
Arts. Junior Warren Hinkle.
Hinkle, a cross country runner from Marengo, Ohio, is
majoring in Mathematics. Junior
Michael Owen. Owen, a cross country runner from
Reedsville, Ohio, is a Sports Studies major.
Senior Ann Marie Allen. Allen, a cross
country runner from Minford, Ohio, is majoring in English
Humanities. Junior Andrea Jackson.
Jackson, a cross country runner from Akron, Ohio, is a
Radiological Technician major.
Senior Chris George. George, a soccer player from
Cincinnati, Ohio, is majoring in Digital Simulation.
Senior Bryan Barker. Barker, a soccer
player from South Point, Ohio, is a Environmental Engineer
major. Senior Matt Lonsinger.
Lonsinger, a soccer player from Logan, Ohio, is majoring in
Mathematical Science. Senior Staci
White. White, a soccer player from Chillicothe, Ohio,
is a Mathematical Science major.

Baseball
BEARS ANNOUNCE 2010 SCHEDULE
The Shawnee State Bears baseball team would like to announce
their schedule for the upcoming 2010 baseball season
highlighted with a three game series versus 2004 NAIA
National Champion, Cumberland University and 2009 NAIA World
Series participant Campbellsville coming to the friendly
confines of Branch Rickey Park. The schedule consists of 55
games with 25 of those being played on the home turf.

SSU PLANS TO JOIN MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE IN
2010
Shawnee State University has announced its
intent to withdraw from the American Mideast Conference
following the 2009-2010 year. The timing coincides with
their application to join the Mid-South Conference beginning
in the fall of 2010.
“We have enjoyed our time in the AMC having
developed some great friendships and rivalries with numerous
teams throughout the conference,” SSU Athletic Director Jeff
Hamilton said. “However we felt it was the right time to
start looking at an alternative conference as more and more
teams are looking elsewhere.”
