Greetings once again from Shawnee State! First off, let me say how great it was to meet all of you who attended the Alumni Awards Banquet on May 7th. We had a wonderful dinner, old friendships were renewed, and new ones were formed. You can check out the fun for yourself at www.shawnee.edu/off/alum/Awards%20Banquet.html. As I told many of you at the Banquet, the next step in rebuilding the Alumni Association is to form a leadership committee that will eventually become the Alumni Council, which is the governing board of the Association. The Council will meet four times a year and will decide the direction of the Association, including the planning of events, such as Homecoming and Alumni Weekend. Those of you who live out-of-town are welcome to be a part of the council, even though you may not be able to attend all of the meetings. If you are interested in serving in a leadership position, please contact me. Due to some budget issues, you will not receive a Summer issue of “Currents” in the mail. The next issue should be in September. In the meantime, please send me any stories, pictures, announcements, etc., that you would like to share with your fellow alumni. I would like to start spotlighting some stories on the website, so if you wouldn’t mind being featured, please let me know. Also, I am looking to design a database of athletic alumni, so if you participated in athletics at SSU, please let me know. The coaches are continually planning alumni events, but they don’t always know where to find everyone to invite them. If you have any addresses for former teammates, please pass those along too. Don’t forget that we are also still searching for past Homecoming Queens and Kings for our Homecoming 2006 celebration February 4th Now here’s some other events coming up on campus: “A Celebration of Scholarship” will take place Thursday, May 26th from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. There will be over 130 presenters (students and alumni) in over 30 sessions. William Galston of the University of Maryland will give the keynote address at 10 a.m. and Barbara Metz of Battelle Memorial Institute will speak at 2 p.m. Printed programs with presentation details will be available at the east front entrance of Massie Hall on the day of the conference. For more information, you can contact Gary Gemmer, Conference Director, at ggemmer@shawnee.edu. Don’t forget that “Counting Day” is Friday, June 3rd from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Alumni Green. We’ll have refreshments for you to munch on, or you can bring your lunch and join us as we count the money that you have found. If you can’t come to “Counting Day,” you can bring your gift box to the Development Office before the 3rd. If it’s not convenient to drop off your box at all, please send a check to the Shawnee State University Development Foundation, 940 Second Street, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662. Remember that all the proceeds from this campaign go to the Friends of Shawnee State Scholarship Fund. If you have any questions about this event, please contact me. I hope to see some of you at “Counting Day” and I can’t wait to see what you’ve found! Thanks to all of you who have already sent in your found money. As always, if you have any questions, comments, concerns, etc., please let me know. You can reach me at ahenderson@shawnee.edu or by calling (740) 351-3364. Until next month… Angela |
