Shawnee State University will welcome a team from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) on September 24, 2018. The HLC team will review the university’s continued ability to meet their criteria for accreditation.

“The accreditation process seeks to determine and confirm the academic quality of the institution and how our institution meets its mission,” said Dr. Jeff Bauer, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at SSU.

Shawnee State University has been accredited by the HLC since 1975.

The HLC is a regional accreditation agency that accredits degree-granting colleges and universities that are based in a 19-state region of the United States. The accreditation validates the quality of an institution as a whole and evaluates multiple aspects of the institution, including its academic offerings, governance and administration, mission, finances and resources.

The HLC’s criteria for accreditation include:

  • Mission: the institution’s mission is clear and articulated publicly; it guides the institution’s operations.
  • Integrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct: the institution acts with integrity; its conduct is ethical and responsible.
  • Teaching and Learning: Quality, Resources, and Support: the institution provides high quality education, wherever and however its offerings are delivered.
  • Teaching and Learning: Evaluation and Improvement: the institution demonstrates responsibility for the quality of its educational programs, learning environments, and support services, and evaluates their effectiveness for student learning through processes designed to promote continuous improvement.
  • Resources, Planning, and Institutional Effectiveness: the institution’s resources, structures, and processes are sufficient to fulfill its mission, improve the quality of its educational offerings, and respond to future challenges and opportunities. The institution plans for the future.

Prior to the HLC team’s visit to campus, SSU is now seeking comments from the public about the university from all constituencies including students, parents of students, prospective students, employers, alumni, donors, elected officials, community member, organizations and businesses.

As part of its federal compliance processes, HLC requires its institutions to undergo a comprehensive evaluation to publish basic information about the visit in appropriate publications and invite the public to provide written comments to HLC.

Comments need to address substantive maters regarding the quality of Shawnee State or its academic programs. Comments need to be submitted no later than August 24, 2018.

HLC will compile the comments and send them to the evaluation team and the university prior to the visit for review. During the visit, the HLC team will discuss any comments received with SSU and follow up as necessary.
