Gary and Marilyn Hairston have established the Michael Hairston Scholarship.
The Shawnee State University Development Foundation (SSUDF) received a generous gift from Gary and Marilyn Hairston to establish the Michael Hairston Scholarship.
The Hairstons established the scholarship to honor the memory of their son, Michael Hairston, who was previously a full-time student enrolled at SSU.
“The scholarship was suggested and supported by my wife, Marilyn, and my former co-workers at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plan in 1999, and as a two-time graduate of SSU myself, Marilyn and I believe that Shawnee State is the best thing to happen to the Portsmouth and Scioto County community, and as such, we could not think of a better way to honor our son’s memory than to establish an annual scholarship in his name,” said Gary Hairston.
The award will be based upon demonstrated financial need and a GPA minimum of 3.0. Applicants must be a graduating senior from Portsmouth High School and be seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree as a full-time student. The scholarship is renewable to prior recipients still enrolled as a full-time student at SSU. Recipient of the Michael Hairston Scholarship will be selected by the University Financial Aid and Scholarship Committee.
