Dr. Awad Hilabi will kick off the Model Arab League Event on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 6 pm.
Shawnee State University welcomes Dr. Awad Hilabi as a kickoff for the Model Arab League Event on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Flohr Lecture in the Clark Memorial Library.
Dr. Hilabi will be presenting “American Responses to the Arab Spring Uprising.” His presentation will focus and examine the American government’s response to the uprisings that toppled dictators and challenged monarchies from 2011 to 2013. The American government’s response was checkered; in some instances, it would support democratic movements, but then opposing popular demonstrations against pro-American leaders in geo-strategically sensitive areas at other times. These responses were measured against a half-century of American support for authoritarian rulers and monarchs in the Middle East region who have long supported American interests.
Dr. Hilabi is an Associate Professor at Wright State University where he teaches Middle Eastern History and Islam in the History and Religion Departments. He is currently working on an Islamic Festival in Jerusalem in honor of the Prophet Moses during the period of late Ottoman and British rule.
Dr. Hilabi’s presentation is also the kick-off for SSU’s Model Arab League Event scheduled for February 2018. The Model Arab League is a diplomatic simulation and leadership development program designed to give students insight into the Middle East and Arab world while building critical leadership skills from public speaking to negotiation and compromise.
The event is sponsored by the Model Arab League, as well as The Political Science Club and the Center for International Programming & Activities (CIPA) at SSU.
