Shawnee State University received a generous donation from the local Kroger Foundation
Shawnee State University received a generous donation from the local Kroger Foundation of $10,000 to give towards the SSU Bear Necessities Pantry.
The Bear Necessities Pantry was created last year to serve any SSU student experiencing financial trouble that may lead to food insecurity or hunger. The pantry has also provided basic personal care items, such as toiletries, feminine hygiene products and soap, as well as basic school supplies for students such as binders, one-subject notebooks, folders and pens and pencils.
The pantry’s goal is to ensure SSU students can have the basic needs without worrying about which to go without if they can’t afford it after tuition costs.
Since the Bear Necessities Pantry operates solely on donations, Kroger’s generous gift will provide the means to buy more supplies as well as a refrigerator for the pantry.
“Thanks to Kroger’s donation, the Bear Necessities Pantry will be looking into purchasing a refrigerator and a freezer. Having both of these will allow for an expansion of food products to offer to the students,” said Courtney Sisk, Americorps Vista and Bear Necessities Pantry Coordinator at SSU. “It will be exciting to be able to offer students milk, eggs and frozen products. We are so lucky to have continued support across campus and throughout the Portsmouth community in keeping the pantry open for our students.”
The donation aligns with Kroger’s mission to fight hunger in local communities. The Kroger Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on ending hunger, improving food security, and bringing fresh, wholesome food to families who need it most.
“According to statistics, one in eight people struggle with hunger, and as America’s grocer and one of the largest retailers in the world, Kroger is committed to doing something about it,” said Amy McCormick, Kroger Corporate Affairs Manager. “By donating to the Bears Necessities Pantry, it helps us serve Kroger’s purpose to Feed the Human SpiritTM. We are passionate in striving to feed the hungry and aid in the mission to end hunger in our communities.”
The Bear Necessities Pantry accepts non-perishable goods which can be dropped off at the pantry located on the 2nd floor of the Morris University Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Monetary donations can be made payable to Shawnee State University, with Bear Necessities Pantry written in the memo line, and can be dropped off and mailed to the Bear Necessities Pantry.
